Now you're just going crazy. Plan ahead? Carry spares? No! I choose not to be an adult and you can't make me!

Actually, the ACSS reticle has gained such popularity, they now have a real Trijicon ACOG with that reticle: Trijicon ACOG 4x32 Scope with Red Dual Illumination ACSS Reticle TA31-R-ACSS

I think the chevron would be great for a rifle but for my purposes it's overkill. A shotgun isn't likely to be shot over 100 yards unless it's using sabot slugs which requires a rifled barrel. I understand some Foster slugs are getting longer distances but I don't think I've even heard of any that do well at 100 yards.

That's not the type of shotgun I'm putting the PA sight on. I have shotguns like that but the Kel-Tec KSG isn't one of them. My 870 is very accurate to about 70 yards with Foster slugs. I'd be surprised to find that the Kel-Tec does as well but it could happen.

But the chevron does look like a good way to make a red dot type sight. You don't have to hide the target with the red dot. With larger dots in sights that can be a real problem when it comes to precision shooting at long distances. You can't hit what you can't see. I use fine reticle scopes for shooting long distances for that same reason.

While I agree that a good optic is better than a bad optic, it's better to error on the side of caution when buying one. I have no experience with PA optics, so I don't have a dog in the hunt. I have one optic for my AR and that is a Burris AR332.
If you plan on using any AR for home defense, you will probably won't have time to remember to turn on your red dot and factor in the size of the weapon and, my personal opinion only, I think any AR used at household ranges is a good choice. Instead of worrying about the good and the bad of PA, one of the best additions would be a GOOD weapon light, preferably one with a strobe option.
I guess what I am trying to say is the chances of actually using a red dot for home defense is very slight. If the PA works fine at the range and you need to use it for HD, no reason it wouldn't do. I'm not a big fan of using one optic for the range and another for HD. In a real emergency, you need every second you can get and fumbling around trying to remember which button does what is a very bad idea.

There are good reasons to use an AR for HD. The type of bullets available for HD was a major factor in me buying an AR in the first place. That said yes it's a good idea to lean to point shoot effectively. And the really good thing about an AR for HD is the amount of ammo you have ready to go. Also I have had lights mounted on my previous HD firearms, 2 shotguns, And I've recently gone back to a shotgun for my primary HD weapon. That is pending testing. I don't want to count on a shotgun only to find the one I picked is a lemon.
