My opinion is they after telling hard to keep Windham out of the running. I read the story on Windham and those guys are trying really hard to give a good rifle at a good price. My guess would be it's just because of the name, why I don't know. To me it seems like s&w has been slipping on QC. I own a basic m&p sport, I have a double pinned gas block being my a2 front sight post. I wanted to upgrade to the m&p 15t because of the clear sight picture. Meaning no a2 in the way. Come to find out, the 15t has a higher price then my gen 1 sport, yet the gas block is held in by a set screw and not pinned in. How is that improving? I think the price is because of the name, and that's it. I held a Windham when they first came out, good rifle. Would have bought it but I really had my eye set on the m&p, and the Windham was about 100.00 more then, and I didn't have it at the time.

As discussed in your thread, the low profile gas block is protected and not prone to being knocked around like the A2 type. The improvement in the 15T is that the barrel is free floated and you get the quad rail for attaching do-dads.
In your case, since you are happy with your rifle and have owned it for quite some time, I would just cut down the front sight base, leaving the gas block portion in tact, and put a free float hand guard on it. Cheaper than buying a new rifle and gets you what you want.

I completely agree with you. That's what I'm in the process of getting started. First the tools, then picking a rail.

I hope someone that has one will confirm that for you, as they told Phil that they are not... and it wouldn't be the first time that S&W customer service gave the wrong answer!
I can confirm first hand that the block on my BCM is not pinned.

I agree, someone with one in hand will be the only way to get the true answer. I'm just going to modify my m&p gen 1 sport. That way I know the gas block is double pinned and won't move. Plus I like the 1-8 barrel on the gen 1 versus the 1-9 on the gen 2. That's just a personal preference. Just like the forward assist, I'm glad my gen 1 is a slick, I don't see the need for what I'm going to be using it for, others feel different and I respect their opinion. Now just trying to find a nice 13-15" free float.

BTW, I would pick the OR Windham over the OR S&W. IMO, you get MORE with the Windham.

I'm new to the AR Platform and just bought a MagPul Tactical S&W AR 15T Model # 311041LE .. S&W M&P15T 16" MAGPUL TACTICAL $0.00 SHIPS FREE
Not sure what a pinned gas block looks like for sure but mine has what appears to be a pin thru the lower part of it with mushroomed heads both sides and is slightly toward the front part of the gas block not centered ..
Is that a pinned gas block ??
The barrel is a 5.56 NATO 1/8 5R
