Default Just got a brand new MP15 Sport 2 for $499 shipped!

Hello everyone,

Just bought my first AR15! Really excited about the sport 2. It was a steal at $499 shipped online with no sales tax! Just had to pay a $20 transfer fee.

That being said, this is my first AR15. I already upgraded the buttstock and grip, and after a lot of reserach I plan on getting a vortex spitfire because I really like the red dot / 3x magnification combo.

Where I could use some advice is the handguard. Am I limited to what I can or cannot put on it? I was thinking of adding a 12" free float keymod handguard and adding a pop up front sight, but I was reading somewhere about that not being possible. I figured this is this place to ask. Thanks in advance!

Nice going, and welcome to the zoo. You'll get a number of comments and suggestions from the folks here. If you haven't done so already, go out and put several hundred rounds through it. That way you'll have a better idea as to whether what you are planning on is really what you want.

I don't think I can answer another question on this topic (so I won't).

OP-use the search function as this question is asked at least once a week.

I'll take a swing at it... yes it is possible... depending upon your skill level and tools, it can even be a do it yourself job. However, based upon your question, I am going to assume that you at least do not have the tools.

As Jagular said, do a search... there are many threads on this very subject, as well as shaving down the front sight or buying a low profile gas block...

Your M&P AR won't look as good as my Ruger AR-556 looks with a MAGPUL MOE SL hand guard, but, it should look good enough.

Welcome aboard from Pennsylvania, Vinny!
Good score at a great price. Take the advice about putting a few hundred rounds through it before doing mods.

It's possible if you want to remove the A2 front sight post and gas block and replace them with a low profile gas block. It's not a lot of work but you have to know what you are doing.

Use the search function and read up on it, tons and tons of threads here talking about what needs to be done and how to do it.

Here is my S&W M&P 15-22. I was at my LGS and I said I wish someone made an AR type in 22lr and he said he just happened to have gotten one in on consignment that morning. I bought it used for $350 and it even had the sale slip where the original buyer bought it a year earlier. It appeared shot very little and it has yet to misfile. I added the red dot to it.

I wish I had come here BEFORE I bought my Sport II and asked some of these questions. It's really a matter of what you want to do with the rifle and how much are you able to do yourself. If you try to free float the stock barrel, you have to change the gas block and front sight as well. Not a big problem if you are willing , but my advice would be to do something similar to what I did, if you have the funds. That is : leave the Sport II handguard and barrel the way it is and buy another complete upper and BCG to play with and modify as you please until you find what you like. I ended up investing about $250 in another complete upper with free float hand guard.
After you have a plan, then you can buy another lower to go with your new upper. Now you have two Ar-15's and you can keep the Sport II original so you can sell it, keep it for range/home defense use, or modify it for a totally different purpose. Just my opinion !

I did .. came and read every blog and then finally joined but read about AR's for a year .. decided I had 0 tools that would be needed and no previous gunsmithing experience even though I have shot since 1959 .. so decided the thing in my case would be to buy basically the way I wanted it set up .. Bought a MagPul Tactical model with Troy Quad Rail .. came under $800 with shipping and transfer fee .. others will go the way of the OP and I don't think anything wrong in doing either way ..

Grabagun is selling the 15-22 for $329 and free shipping right now. I bought one. I'm really impressed with its accuracy and reliability. The flip up sights are very accurate out of the box too.
The only thing I've added is a Primary Arms red dot sight.
A fun rifle and 6¢ and 7¢ a round isn't breaking the bank either.
You're going to really enjoy that rifle.
I'm beginning to use some steel targets.
G'luck and enjoy.

Vinny2times: Welcome to the forum, many people with a great deal of knowledge. As stated by JH1951 run 500 through it to knock off burrs, let every seat and to give you an idea of what you like/dislike. Frequently people start changing triggers, springs, stocks, etc, and find a weapon begins to malfunction ( feeding, ejection) and they have added so many after market parts that it becomes difficult to diagnose a problem (magazine, ammo, gas tube, port size, etc ). Get to know the gun, and see where benefits could be made for YOU. My one and only suggestion ( if this will be a self/home defense firearm) to add a light with pressure pad. Utg and many other make inexpensive lights that will give you a feel for position on the gun, position of pressure pad, etc. After you have run it awhile, then you may want to switch out for bigger, better, badder, try both a fixed mount and a QD, see what works for you. Be Safe,

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone mention not to put a plastic folding front sight on a centerfire AR15 railed gas block if yo get the barrel hot enough to not be able to touch it. Use a metal folding sight. The plastic folding front sight is intended to be mounted on a free float forend, not the gas block. The only gas block I put a plastic folding sight on is on my .22 LR AR, as it will never get hot enough to cause a problem.

I paid the same price for my Sport II at a gun show on April 1st ($519) and got to see, examine and hold it, shake hands and play with it before taking it home that day. Although I did have to pay sales tax, I got a free can cooler and a discount on some magazines too.

The disturbing part is I turned right around and spent more than that on optics, hand guard, grip and a laser sight. And there's more to come. When does the affliction end?

Man I feel bad. I paid $680 for mine. That's what happens when you don't shop around. Our Sportsman store here is high on weapons as a rule. But, I have it, and I like it. So, I will live with the high costs. Just not happy about that part! I won't be buying guns from them any time soon...if ever!

This is EXACTLY why I don't like to buy local. They try to stick it to you with THEIR high overhead. The only time I buy local is if it's a better price than what I can get online. Sorry, but, this is modern progress. Times are changing and so are products and the way they are sold. You just have to accept it or get left behind.

Dont feel bad. Ya wanted one and ya scored one

My timing was off too. Bought mine about a year ago. Just missed the Whittakers deal, everybody out of stock yada,yada...

Finally got one at SSDInternational. Had to really jump through hoops to get approved LEO/FD/1Resp.....but I got it. Paid 568 for it plus shipping so call it 590. Not too bad considering their weren't any out there at the time

...all that cause momma said "Get me one!!!"

Im in the country so most the FFL stores are for their own benefit and Ive never seen any prices worth even considering.

Good score and good price. I went with my local gun shop and got a Sport 2 with Magpul MOE hand guard and an MBUS flip sight for $530 out the door. As others have said, put some rounds downrange and have fun before deciding on upgrades. It's a rock solid platform right outta the box IMHO.

Where I could use some advice is the handguard. Am I limited to what I can or cannot put on it? I was thinking of adding a 12" free float keymod handguard and adding a pop up front sight, but I was reading somewhere about that not being possible.
Virtually anything is possible. The question is whether or not you want to invest the money.

At this point I'm going to ask why you bought a $499 gun just to start spending more money tearing it apart? Why didn't you buy what you wanted in the first place?

You can get to where you want to go by:
  • Replace the front sight base with a low profile gas block,
  • Mount a pop-up front sight on it.
  • Remove the stock hadguards and their bases and replace them with a free floating set.
All it will take will be some time and cost some money. If you're handy with tools, check out the youtube videos that will tell you how to do this. If you're not handy, pay a gunsmith to do the work for you and ensure it is done right.

Congrats on your great deal on a great rifle. You won't be sorry.

As for the modifications have you considered this - you bought a rifle without the features you really wanted. It may be possible to alter the Sport to have the features you want but they will either require a gunsmith or make you buy the tools you need and learn to do the work yourself in which case you may end up voiding that great S&W warranty that makes the Sport such a great bargain. I don't know that they would void the warranty or not cover anything you changed but it's possible. I saw a Jeep dealership void the warranty on a Wrangler because the owner drove it off road for a few minutes. It had no damage at all from the off road driving - they just canceled his entire warranty because he did something that wouldn't be as bad as driving up my driveway to my house in the woods. I would want to know about this issue before I started making serious changes like changing the gas tube. That can be a source of real problems and it could be S&W would blame everything on that one issue. I doubt that would happen given the S&W reputation but I'd want to know for sure before I made any permanent changes.

Alternately you could buy a rifle already set up with a free floating hand guard and the pop up sight. The fact you need to change the gas tube to get the setup you want will likely cause you to need that new gas tube. I'm no expert but I do know they make rifles like you want. Yes they cost more but you're either going to pay a gunsmith to change your Sport or you're going to have to buy the tools to do it yourself and you'll end up with a box of parts you won't be using most likely and possibly problems you didn't anticipate. As great as the Sport is there are other great rifles too IMO and you should at least consider whether you want to buy another rifle and sell your Sport and whether there might be warranty issues if you do change your rifle.

Good luck whichever way you choose to go. I do understand people like to do their own upgrades and if doing that is something you enjoy then go for it. But still I'd want to check the bottom line before making changes.

Congrats, you got a nice rifle. There will be good advice coming your way. I bought my Sport II last may and took the "shoot the snot out of it" advice before doing any upgrades. My own views: (take them for what it's worth) A free float hand-guard requires some fairly major modification and voiding the S&W warrantee may be a concern. Until I get several thousand rounds down range and determine to my satisfaction that my rifle is reliable in as many adverse conditions as possible and shouldn't require any major warrantee work, I'm only doing minor upgrades that make my shooting experience more comfortable to me. ALG ACT trigger, BAD lever, MOE grip, MOE SL handguard (drop in) MAG400 MOE Stock, SPARC AR red dot and H1 buffer and CS enhanced spring with a spikes 7075-T6 buffer tube. Did my sport need any of this stuff? Absolutely not, it worked just fine out of the box. My plan is that if I ever shoot this barrel out (doubtful) then I will play with free floating the next barrel/handguard. I sure like the looks of the ALG (EMR) V2 M-LOK in 13" and the Faxon GUNNER Mid Length. Of course YMMV.

Just to follow up on my previous point I was looking at the M&P15T a few minutes ago. It comes with a free floated barrel and a front sight that is mounted on the rail (it has a quad rail also btw). So removing it will take at least 30 seconds allowing for any sight you want to use. Plus the barrel is 1:8 and has the 5T rifling that is supposedly an upgrade. If you like a quad rail this rifle might be a better option than trying to upgrade your Sport. The lowest price I found with a quick search was $870. If it was going to cost me $200 to change my Sport over to a free floated barrel design with no front sight post I wouldn't even think about doing that. I'd spend the extra money for the M&P15T and sell the Sport. You'll have a warranty that can't be questioned and the features you're looking for. Any time you are looking to make a major change in a rifle you should really consider buying the rifle you want and selling the one you were going to upgrade. IMO you come out ahead buying what you want right from the start.

If you enjoy the gun, don't worry about it. I subscribe to the theory " you didn't pay too much, you just bought it to early."

Yeah, just one of those things. I am enjoying the rifle. Really solid, and shoots very well. Only mod I plan on is a scope.

Exactly. I've been shooting AKs and hunitng / sporting rifles and only got Sport II as my first AR this February and I felt like I've been missing on a lot of fun. I really don't see any need to change anything on it at this point. Just added a scope.

Actually, I will probably change or modify the pistol grip at some point, since the one installed is a tad hard / uncomfortable. The rest of the gun is just fine.

I'm generally not real big on modding and accessorizing stuff like a lot of people are, and agree the Sport is pretty much GTG, as is.
But, along with that grip change, I would consider a Magpul handguard set. They're pretty damned cheap, but are highly functional and ergonomic, versus that unconfortable little waffle thing they come with.
If you handle a rifle with one on it, I'm sure you'll "get it" immediately.
One other thing I would recommned, probably even more than the Magpul handguards, is the Tapco Intrafuse T6 rubber buttpad. It folds around the plastic butt on your factory stock, and adds to the length-of-pull, as well as increasing the overall surface area.
These things make shouldering the original stock surprisingly more comfortable, the difference is night and day. They're cheap, I got one on ebay for something like $10 delivered, but they're really worth it.
Take a look.......
