AR-15 BCG
Where I live, it's considered a village, not a town. The population here is approximately 300 +/- a few. My dad lives about 2 miles away on about 7 acres.
His neighbor across the road from him bought a S&W Sport II from our only LGS about (3) months ago. The LGS honored kygunco.com online price of $499.99 + tax.
He has done a few upgraes, including a new BCG made by APOC ARMORY. I have NEVER heard of this BCG maker. Has anyone else here heard about them? The BCG looks darn good. It's in the link below.
APOC Armory Black Nitride M16 Bolt Carrier Group .223/5.56 – AR15Discounts

I have never heard of the name, but the specs look good.

I have had several AR-15s and can't really tell the difference between the bolt charging groups. I wonder why a S&W would need a different one and am not sure that one would be an upgrade. Also if you are going to buy an AR and start changing out parts you are better off to build one in the first place.

The Ruger has a PSA Nickle Boron in it.
I was at my dads house yesterday and his neighbor came over with his AR. My dad told him I was into assault weapons and had a few. He was just showing me his Sport II and the parts he has added to it. He also took off the Magpul rear sight and installed a Troy metal sight. He also added a sling and a Troy GI style stock. He was at the LGS range and the owner suggested he change out a few things on his AR. He carries APOC ARMORY products. The BCG and trigger were the (2) main items. BTW, he also installed a BCM PNT trigger.

The owner at the LGS sells these BCG's and suggested he change out the factory one. Why, I don't know. Would you like his phone number to call and ask him?

I think we know why the owner of the LGS suggested it... $$$
No other reason if the AR was functioning properly.

Yep. I can see no logical reason to swap the BCG if the gun is working. (Except for the store owner to make some money.)
Are some better than others? Maybe. It has no affect on accuracy and I have yet to see one actually fail. I'm sure it's happened, it's just rare.

Well, you were the one that educated me on the firing pin being un-shrouded in my AR-556. That led me to buy the PSA non logo Premium BCG. Then, I bought the Nickle Boron PSA BCG. Which cleans up very nicely after shooting.
Strange thing is, my dads neighbor is retired from ICE. You would think that he's knowledgeable about firearms and such.....?????

Well, it was failing, sort of.
I bought a KNS-PERMA PIN
DS Arms - KNS Precision AR15/ M16 PERMA Pin Firing Pin Retaining Pin
and it was starting to get bent, just like you stated it would. So, the PSA Premium BCG (No logo) was on sale and I bought it.
Then PSA had a Christmas sale on the Nickle Boron BCG ($89.95 FREE SHIPPING) and I definitely jumped on that.

My dad was retired Air Force. Doesn't mean he was a fighter pilot ace. Just saying.

Friend is a RO and he will tell you the majority of people in the law enforcement field are not gun people .. and many never carry during their entire career .. I worked with a guy who's dad retired from the FBI .. he never carried a gun .. worked in a lab .. was a scientist ..

Why not replace the perma pin with a cotter pin like came with the gun? A lot cheaper than a new bolt carrier and a bolt carrier with a properly staked gas key is about as simple and durable as any mechanical part made.

My point being is normally you have a reason to swap out a part, so I was wondering what was the reason the LGS stated he should swap the BCG? Was it done just becuase he said so, or did he have a reason. Most will say the stock BCG that comes withe the Sport II is just fine.

I don't talk to my dad that much because he is a huge MUSHROOM HEAD! And, I try to avoid him like the black plague, sometimes. But, next time I visit him, I will ride my 4 wheeler across the road and ask his neighbor why he bought and installed a new BCG. Would you like pics as well?

I replaced the original factory firing pin retaining pin with the aftermarket one, thinking it would NOT bend like the factory one did.
For you, and those that like this reply, the firing pin was unshrouded. And, the gas key bolts ARE NOT properly staked! So, I bought a new BCG that was;
1) Shrouded
2) Properly staked gas key bolts
3) BECAUSE I CAN!
Dated pictures below.

About the source of that BCG, there are only a very few firms in CONUS who actually make carriers or bolts. On the other hand, there are a cosmic **** load of folks who (and also frequently attach "Armory" to their DBA name as a hook) flog them hoping to make a buck from the clue-less/wanna-bes.
I recall the preface to the parody version of Lord of the Rings (Bored of the Rings-total hoot) that I believe is applicable here. They make the notation that if you bought the book without a cover or without noting that it was not by the famous name author..........oh my, ring up another sucker Bucky.

I think it would be wise to lock this thread. Someone has already posted something aimed at me, yet, I don't know why. I might be tempted to state something that will give me a vacation.
I guess I should stop contributing so much, because it draws all sorts of comments from the wood works.
If some of you haven't noticed yet, I have a black soul! What I did in the military doesn't even phase me. That's why I think this post should be locked. Thank You!

No, it's not you my military brethren. You actually helped me, by pointing out the Rugers poor quality BCG.
I called my dad last night to ask for his neighbors number. He wasn't home, but I will try back today. I want to know why he bought the BCG now.

$499.99 for the Sport II is why the gun store owner did it. Because he lost his *** on the gun deal after someone went full on WalMart and shopped online. He had to make the money from somewhere. I hope he can stay in business.

As long as we keep the critiques focused on the subject and not at each other we'll do fine...

I'm lost. You start a thread asking about a BCG that your neighbor bought and replaced in his Sport II, I respond asking why he felt the need to replace it and then you start throwing out rolling eye faces at me like I'm asking something totally off the wall.
Natural curiosity would dictate that if someone thought the Sport BCG is not up to par that we would want to know why. Am I asking too much here? (see I can post funny little emoticons too)
@ChattanoogaPhil, am I off base here?

When one of the Mods posts something like #27 it means to forget about whatever bickering or misunderstanding there might have been earlier in the thread and move along... on topic. A general PSA for all Forum readers.
