Default M&P 15 Sport 2 Bending bullets

Hello, I recently purchased a M&P 15 Sport 2, went to the range the first time with it and had a few minor hiccups, that I assumed were from my inexperience. After cleaning the weapon, I went back out to the range about 2 weeks later to find that my bolt was not chambering bullets properly. I noticed when I insert a new magazine, and release the slide catch, more often than not, it would result in the bullet not chambering proper and the bullet being ejected with a long scratch on the casing and with the bullet itself bent. I have taken it apart, re cleaned everything, and re-oiled everything as well, especially the bolt itself. However it is still bending bullets. Any help is appreciated! Thank you

Did you push the charging handle forward before releasing the bolt catch/release? If not you might want to try that. I had the same issue when I first got mine but it was because I was trying to chamber the round manually by pulling back the charging handle and releasing. It would get stove-piped in there. No issues since then though.

yup, just tried that. Still being the bullet. A large scratch is on the casing of the bullet and the bullet is still Bending. All bullets this happens to, come out looking the same way.

Have you tried a different magazine with the same results? Do you have a friend that also has an AR that you could put your upper on his lower and see if the problem follows?

Or, you could simply call S&W for a return tag and let them figure it out.

Are you saying that you can not insert a new magazine with the bolt forward, pull the charging handle back, release it, and have the weapon chamber the round?

If your rifle will not do this, you have an issue.

Sstadler, I had a similar issue where the very first round fired out of a different model M&P15 got stuck and when I got it out it was well bent.

I sent it back to S&W and had it back a week later. Turned out the bolt was milled out of spec near the extractor pocket. They replaced the bolt and all has been good since.

It could be a similar issue with yours if you are sure you are seating the magazines properly.

Try locking the bolt back, inserting the magazine until you hear the click and can't pull it out and then send the bolt forward. If it does it again, there's a good chance something is out of spec.

Others here have much more experience in this area and will be able to provide further info.

Does the same thing with different magazines and ammo. Sounds like it is a manufacturing error. I can lock the bolt back, insert a magazine, and release the bolt catch to chamber a round. It will not chamber completely and bend the bullet 9 times out of 10.

Yep, send it back... S&W will fix it and get it back out to you.

Call or email. Get a return label and let them fix the problem.
At this point no further experimenting is called for.

Thumbs up

You can send it back to S&W and get a new factory BCG (maybe) or just invest in a good aftermarket BCG. PSA is having an Easter sale right now with some great BCG's on sale.
Flame suit is now on!

Wouldn't go this route as it could be something with the receiver being out of spec...

RE: Bending Bullets (cartridges)

Brass is not strong. The bolt carrier group is steel; very strong. Any time any center-fire rifle has a double feed or misfeed, there is a chance the cartridge will be bent. It is a common happening especially with an AR style rifle when it has a malfunction.

Do not attempt to straighten or fire bent rounds. If straightening is attempted, at best the crimp will be loosened. At worst the round could end up being set back which could cause an over pressure condition when fired. Also, if the case is bent enough, it may lodge in the chamber and require tools to get it out.

Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. Send your gun straight to S&W for evaluation. It might be something small or it could be a combination of things. If I could see the gun in person, we might be able to figure it out and fix it simply. Since that's not possible, don't screw around. Send it to S&W. It's free.

I think the only confusing part is that it worked almost completely fine the first time I shot it. But I've taken it apart and reassembled it multiple times but can't get rid of the mechanical error that I've been explaining.

I urge you to take the admonition to heart and let S&W take care of it.

This is exactly what I expect to see from a double feed. I see it all the time when practicing malfunction clearance.

Sending it to S&W is the right thing to do.

I am having the same issue. I have seen a few threads where people post about this issue but never give anyone on the thread providing suggestions an answer as to what the issue was... I have sent mine back to S&w for repair. I will be providing feedback once it is returned so others can know what the issue was. S&w is getting slammed pretty hard by the few users having the issue so I will help once I get an answer.

Here's a link to a thread started by me a little over a year ago after experiencing a similar issue which resulted in my M&P15 TS being returned to the mother ship after firing a grand total of one round.

Perhaps some of you, especially those having issues, will find some info of use there.

I had the same problem that manifested itself with Remington FMJ/55gr ammo. (All-out locked BCG, bent bullet in the case, scratching on the bullet and case, lateral cut marks on the bullet.) When I tried some Remington Fusion 62gr, the rifle worked flawlessly. I don't recall what made me check but I measured the rounds and found the 55gr. ammo was a full 2mm shorter than the Fusion rounds. And that gave me additional thought on the problem.

What I did hasn't been proven to fix it yet as I haven't been able to get to the range. But I've cycled the 55gr. live rounds from four different mags and I no longer get the jams. I'm waiting on a range test before I say anything more but I didn't replace ANY parts.

I just received mine back from Smith and Wesson and they replaced the BCG. I have to leave for Vegas today and wont be able to fire it until at least Sunday or Monday but I will let you know if that fixed the issue. The turnaround time was about 1 week once they received the rifle.

I can confirm that the rifle now works after replacing the "bolt". Although, not sure now if it was the entire BCG or not.

In my case, (discussed above), they only replaced the "out of spec" bolt and not the entire BCG.

It solved the issue so that's all I was concerned with.
