I just got mine in March and I haven't noticed any color or shade difference between the black upper and black lower.

Here is another thread from not to long ago asking the the same question, I'm guessing it's pretty common. I was lucky and have a matching set.

I never noticed but after seeing your pic I checked mine out today at the range and have the same thing, doesn't effect performance so I'm hoping I'll forget about it.

So I never looked but after just cleaning all my rifles from using them at the range this weekend they are all like that, my Daniel Defense and my BCM are both off.

Makes you wonder what uppers they are using?

My Sport I and AR-556 both have matching upper's and lower's.
BTW, I noticed a "KEYHOLE" emblem on both of my AR's. What AR part manufacturing company uses this emblem?

That is the forge marking... the keyhole is Cerro Forge, if I remember correctly. S&W does all the final machining for the Sport, and I would assume that Ruger does the same.

Pretty sure Ruger does their own from start to finish. They own Pine Tree Casting, a massive investment casting and forging company.

Not if it has a Cerro forge mark on it... S&W claimed to do it all too back when the original Sport hit the market, yet myself and other members here found forge markings on some... Demand was high and S&W probably couldn't keep up.

I don't know if this info is current, but Ruger's Pine Tree division is so massive, only about 25% of their capacity is consumed in house. They make product for others. It's part of their business plan.

Might have changed in the past few years though.

For the original question... unless the forgings are mated together before machining, drilled out together, and then hand fitted, you will have lines that are a little off.

Since the uppers and lowers are machined separately and pulled from a parts bin, there will be slight differences... like the holes being drilled for the pins and they are each a thousandth's of an inch of center in opposite directions on the upper and the lower... It could still be in spec, but cause the alignment to be off ever so slightly.

This is one of those things like slop between an upper and lower... doesn't affect accuracy or reliability, so it's a non-issue.

If things don't match or aren't lined up perfectly, relax. It's mil-spec.

You know it... we had a process when I was in... Measure with a micrometer, mark it with a piece of chalk, cut it with a chainsaw!

You're correct, Cerro Forge Foundry. The 2nd link shows a great close up of the keyhole emblem. The rest of the link is great reading as well.

If you want perfect lines, you will need to spend more than what you spent on a Sport. Probably would need to skip most commercially mass produced AR-15s altogether.

Yup, Kinda get what you pay for. Got a few that were handbuilt from the ground up, but none of those are close to "run of the mill". Easy to tell the difference between those and assembly line ones.

No worries. I have a couple that look like they were the last of what was left over for parts but have been 100% reliable and shoot very well.

There are minor shading differences on both of the M&P15s that I bought for my sons. A good cleaning and oiling minimized the differences considerably.

Also, the color variation is nothing like the Hydra-Matic built M-16 I carried when I was in the Army. The upper was like a dove gray and the lower looked like it had been anodized gold and had then faded.

On my Sport II, the upper and lower appear to be the same color. The square the OP referenced appears to be offset by about 1mm. And the forging was done by Anchor Harvey Aluminum, as shown by the Split A.
