Is This A New M&P15 AR?
I am subscribed to this firearms site and saw this S&W AR-15. It states that is has a new aluminum S&W slim handguard (S&W makes handguards?). And, this is the game changer; the 1/8 twist 5R barrel is used on this AR!
This looks like a nice AR-15. I like it!

Looks like it is an updated model. SKU matches with the one at S&W. MSRP is a lot higher($1239). 15T's also come with the 5r, so looks like that barrel config hasn't completely gone away.

Yep, an "updated" model. The 15x used to come with Troy goodies... now it has the 1:8 twist, 5R barrel and S&W branded hand guard. Kinda like how the 15T was "updated" a few years ago. S&W considers the 1:8 twist, 5R barrel to be a premium barrel, and are putting it in several of their models. It isn't going away, just not being used in the Sports.

I like the new updated version. I also would like to know if the 5R barrel can be purchased.

I did a GOOGLE search and found this barrel. It's stated that the 3R rifling barrels are a higher performance of the the 5R.
If I had not received that FREE barrel with the BCG my son bought awhile back, I might have considered buying one of these barrels.

Two stage triggers have been standard on the AR and M16 since the inception, a more common description is "military 2 stage trigger". Personally I wouldn't consider any trigger in a rifle in this price range as "match grade", there is a reason why true "match triggers" cost as much as they do, they are more expensive to produce. BTW, I prefer Timney's drop in triggers and they typically retail around 200 dollars or more.
One thing of not about the rifle pictured is that it appears to feature a Pistol Length Gas System (based on the front site placement) and that means an overgassed receiver and more bolt slap to punch you in the shoulder and flip the barrel up off target. That alone is enough for me to give this model a pass, because replacing that barrel for one with an intermediate gas system and a new handguard and gas system completely removes this rifle from the "bargain" price range. Note, do some reading and you'll find that the Intermediate gas system length is now the "rage" for 3 gun competition because they reduce muzzle flip and ease the impact on the shoulder a bit. Basically I don't think this particular package was very well thought out at all.

It's a carbine length gas system and non free float handguard. A2 front sight but something other than A2 flash hider thingie.
Replaced the standard GI single stage trigger with something probably equivalent to Del-Ton's two stage. Who knows? "Match" is tossed around about as loosely as "Tactical" these days.
Other than if someone wants the 1/8 twist... I don't see a lot there for the extra coin.

Link to S&W site for this rifle...
M&P(R)15X with M-LOK(R) | Smith & Wesson
No "match grade" trigger mentioned there. Basically, this rifle is similar to the 15T with M-Lok, except it has a drop in hand guard vs. the free float on the T. Not sure why this has a higher MSRP... I would go with the T.

If the OP's link has an incorrect description of the new 15x and it actually has just a GI trigger... that puts MSRP even more into the HUH? category.

I'm not seeing a second link in your post.
So the first link in the OP post is incorrect about the "Trigger Two Stage Match" it has listed in the specifications?

For sure. Here's a head-to-head comparison of the 15T and 15X.

I forgot to put the link in... went back in and corrected it...
S&W does not state anything about a match trigger...

I looked at Cabela's and another website. Didn't list a two stage match trigger as in the OP link.
According to the link in the OP, they list a 16in and an 18in 8lb version.

That link is for the T....was that your intention?
For the money, I would go for the T all day long rather than this new X. No brainer.

Thumbs up.
I'm not paying $1239 or even street value of probably $800-$900 for the 5R barrel. That's the only really desireable feature of this new X compared to a Sport II.

Agree... too much premium for the barrel and the handguard... unless there is something that S&W isn't telling us about the Sport II...
But same type of thing on Sport II OR vs the standard OR, with only noticeable difference being Armornite vs. chrome lining.

See its gone up a few dollars since I bought it from BUD's ..
