Looking at Vortex Venom, what else do I need?
If I add a red dot sight like a Vortex Venom to my M&P15 AR, what do I need to buy, to mount to the top of the gun rail, to mount the sight to?
I want to raise it up to properly co-witness the gun's iron sights in the bottom of the red dot sight. Does S&W make a riser mount? I'm not even sure what it's called. Sorry, newbie here.
I'm open to other brand mounts as well - even other sights - but want to stay under $250 on the red dot.
Thanks!

You will need some type of riser... I would call Vortex and ask them what height you need for a lower 1/3 co-witness with that particular optic.

There are better options for your Sport than the Venom. Vortex makes awesome sights, if you want a red dot look at the Strikefire II. The best option for me in scopes is the Strike Eagle 1x6 x 24.
My first choice for my AR is the Primary Arms MD-ADS. Has 50,000 hours of battery life. Never needs to be turned off for Home Defense.
Second is the Vortex Strikefire or the Bushnell TRS-25, for a LOT less dollars.

I almost got the Bushnell TRS-25 just to try it out since it's cheap.
But I ended up getting The Bushnell TRS-32 Red Dot for a great deal, $15 off eBay coupon and a 25% rebate form.
Will end up costing me around $55. At that price I figured why not?

Take a look at the Vortex SPARC AR. It's a 2MOA red dot that comes with a mount that is adaptable for lower 1/3 or absolute cowitness with the front sight. Mine has been reliable so far, and it was spot on at 50 yards out of the box - no sighting in needed (your mileage may vary on that).
I noticed that Palmetto has it on sale along with 10 PMags for $200 which is the "normal" street price of the optic alone.

The Vortex Venom riser for an AR.
Vortex Optics - Mount Riser- QR
Q&A section - "This riser will mount the Venom at lower 1/3 co-witness height so you will be able to use your iron sights through the bottom portion of the optic.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the replies. Not sure why, but I like the look of the more open sites vs tube sites. Less obstruction on the sides. Plus, I can move it to a handgun a bit easier.
Thanks for the link ChattanoogaPhil - I wasn't sure if the top rail mount on my AR (M&P15 II) was the same width/height of all AR's, so wasn't sure if the riser mounting method was standardized for all AR's. I guess it is!
I have research to do...

I hope you plan too only shoot nearby targets, 5 MOA is a huge dot! Most tend to use 2 MOA.
