The Sport II is a great AR. But, look around real good because they are coming down in price and there a lot of great deals on them out there.
When you get it, post up some pics of it.

Very happy with my Sport II. It shoots every bit as good as my buddy's Diamondback. Any complaints I had were resolved with the M&P T. The main thing I was going to change about my Sport II was the handguard, but I've since built another AR just so I can keep my Sport II as it came.

Likes: - Comparatively low cost
- Reliable
- Well-built
- Good warranty from reliable company
Dislikes: - Magpul plastic back-up sights
Problems:
Worth the Money? - Yes. I shopped around for months before buying the first of these for my oldest son (later bought a second for the younger son) and concluded that from what was available in the local stores, the Sport II represented the (pardon the cornball line) "best bang for the buck".
Better Choices? - Possibly. The Sport II had everything I was looking for and nothing that I didn't. I've since seen rifles from other manufacturers with the same features for less money, so if you don't mind having to rely on a company that hasn't been around as long as S&W, there may be better choices. I place some value on the fact S&W is likely to be around to fix any problems that arise.

I think it's safe to say that pretty much we all here love our Sports be it an original Sport or Sport II. Just go buy one and see for yourself.

My comments will be unremarkable, I think, as compared with what others have to say. But I'll say it anyway.
I have a Sport I. I love it. It shoots well. I can get sub-MOA off the bench with reloads using good bullets. I've got approximately 3,000 rounds through it - and the two times (only two) I got "click" instead of "bang" it was due to issues with my reloads.
The gun, literally, has been flawless.

I love my Sport. It's very accurate and so far completely reliable. It didn't have a bunch of features I didn't want when I bought it which kept the price down. Now the price is almost insanely low. I can't imagine anyone is selling AK-47's anymore because they cost more than an AR now and that makes no sense at all.
Great company, great rifle, great price - what's not to like?

I just never understood why AK variants got so popular and went up. I guess hype and the gun rush a few years back. I kinda wanted a Saiga when they were $399. Kinda wanted an SAR-1 even further back when the were $299. But never bought one. Because every time I held one, I thought I was holding a cheap piece of junk. In a civilian market, the ability to still run well when exposed to extreme elements isn't really practical. The ability to be extremely accurate however is. I'm not going to war and I like MOA instead of MO5gallonbucket. AR guy here. Even the cheapest AR's are built better than most AK's. If I want a goat that will eat up steel case 7.62, I'd probably have an SKS. But I would have had it 1995 when they were $69.95 at every pawn shop in sight.

The only issue with mine is that I paid way more than they are going for now. I saw one on wikiarms this morning for $429. Over $200 less than I paid last year.

Better choices? Sure, there are hundreds of better choices out there. However, better is a relative term. It all depends on what you want out of your AR.
So what do you want?

I had an AK once. I didn't like it much. I bought a SKS in 1992 when they were $100. By 1995 they had gone up BTW. But the ammo was still cheap as heck too. You had the choice of spending $300 for a rifle and enough ammo to melt the barrel for $1200 or so with no ammo. That pretty much explains that. Also I think you exaggerate the accuracy of the AK / SKS. I had no trouble shooting off hand and hitting a gallon jug at maybe 250 yards. And there is plenty to be said for a rifle that goes bang every time when you pull the trigger. I don't need to lay in a mud hole for a week with my rifle under water to know that a gun that has maybe 2 dozen mis-feeds or FTE issues through thousands and thousands of rounds is a good thing. And every problem I ever had with my SKS was caused by bad ammo or by me tinkering with it (which was fixed when I went back to the OEM design). And yes I put a detachable mag on mine. Those mags have never failed even once and I put one on the first day I bought the rifle. 30 rounds vs. 10 was no contest IMO even if swapping mags was slow and cumbersome. If I had understood how well stripper clips work I probably would have never converted it.
My brother in law bought an AR back about the same time. He bought a Colt. Nice rifle. Big price tag. And for years the entry level AR's I saw didn't run very well at all. That's why people bought AK's. They didn't have issues like that and the price was low until maybe a decade ago. Once they hit $400 I never even considered buying one. Imagine how many want one now given the fact you can buy a Sport II for $450 if you look around.
There is something to be said for the power of the 7.62 x 39 round too. Of course hollow point and other designs with modern AR's are much more effective. But for many years it wasn't that easy (or cheap) to buy that kind of ammo for an AR. And make no mistake about it there is substantial difference in power between the 7.62 and the 5.56 rounds. It's a horrible example I guess but I know of a guy who shot up a trailer killing his uncle inside using an SKS. He shot holes through the trailer completely and not much stopped his rounds. I'm not sure a .223 round would do that much damage. I've seen 7.62 rounds go right through trees I wouldn't have dreamed they would go through. They penetrate plenty.
I still have my SKS and a whole bunch of ammo a lot of which I bought back in the 90's (yes I have cases of brass ammo). There's no way I could get what it's actually worth now. I would still trust my life to that rifle if I needed to. Given where I live it's actually possible a person could need a rifle like that. Not at all likely of course but possible. It has kept the local gang of burglars scared away from my house since I built that house or close to it. There's nothing like ripping off 30 rounds or so (loud rounds too) to let the neighbors know what they will be up against.
The SKS is retired to the safe now. I will probably shoot up all the ammo at some point just for fun. I could probably sell some of that I guess. But the rifle is a keeper because there's no way I could replace it for what I have in it and it is still plenty effective if needed.
