Default Nikon Prostaff

Just picked this up from Gander Mt. reg. $229. Got it for 135.
Thoughts or experience with this one. Seemed like a good deal.

I would say you got a good deal on that. I would jump on it too. Nikon has great optics.

I have had a few and no complaints and you definitely got it at a good price. Enjoy it.

So what kind of mount would you suggest for this scope? Currently have a standard MP Sport ll. I plan on using it later on probably a 20 inch bull barrel upper when funds allow.

An offset cantilever mount is what you'll find on most AR's. This type of mount moves the scope forward, allowing you to achieve proper eye relief when you mount the rifle. My personal Sport II has the Burris PEPR mount.

Good price indeed. Glad to hear favorable reports. Need to replace my Redfield Tracker 3x9. LOL Still holds zero but am sure new glass would be an improvement.

Yeah our local Gander Mt is going out of business Dyr only now are they offering discounts enough to matter. They are at 30% off on most of their inventory that's left. Still a good selection of optics, mostly higher end. One whole display case of Leopoldo, plenty Vortex and Nikon and a few Bushnells left.

You'll like the Prostaff, and you didn't do bad on the price -- but my local Walmart has them every day for $159. Mostly, our nearest Gander Mountain has just lowered prices on most stuff to the everyday Walmart price in the going-out-of-business sale. If they'd had 'em there all along, they might not be going out...

I know, way over priced. Now that they are at 30% they are starting to clear things out.

They had a Bushnell Trophy XLT, 15X45X50mm spotting scope, that normally sells for $200 on sale for $93. Bushnell had a Father's Day $40 rebate on them, so it ends up costing me $53. Rebate runs through today, June 22, so hurry down and get one.

I bought 3 prostaffs on clearance from Cabelas some 3-4 years back. All were disappointing in clarity for their price point. I think I read that they were redesigned shortly thereafter though. Hopefully yours is new stock with better glass.

I have a couple of the original ProStaff models (both 3-9X40) and I couldn't be happier with them. They pick up light almost like they have night vision. And they are as clear as any scope I've seen in their price range. They are good scopes around besides Nikon but Nikon certainly makes a good scope.

What's the difference between the ProStaff, Buckmaster and the 223 in 3-9x40. They all look alike but the price varies. What's up with that?

Here let me google that for you: Rifle Scopes from Nikon Happy researching. Normally I would track down all the differences, but there really is no significant difference. They're all mediocre scopes. If used for +/-3MOA purposes and at distances 200 yards and less, you'll be equally happy with all of them.

My understanding is that the difference is in the glass and the construction. My own personal observations bear that out. The ProStaff is not the same ProStaff that was sold 8-10 years ago. I believe the 223 is the same as the old ProStaff but don't hold me to that. It's just what I read somewhere. I can't really vouch for that.

Mediocre? If you're comparing it to a $4000 Nightforce scope I'd agree that it's mediocre. But compared to other scopes in the same price range they do pretty well IMO.

Looking at the Nikon website there are obviously differences in the discontinued Prostaff 3-9X40 models. Discontinued 3-9X40 models rated at 90% light transmission. Current production 3-9X40 rated at 98%. Probably different lens coatings.

This is what Nikon's website has to offer for comparisons.

My 2 cents-
Buckmaster is their entry level.
P-223 has a specific reticle and finger turrets.

I also use the Burris PEPR mount and have no issues with it, if they would have been on sale when I was looking I would have bought the LaRue QD LT104. The QD LT104 run in the $210 range but last week they were on sale for $139 for the first time ever.

Grabbed one up to try out.

I use the PEPR on one of my rimfire ARs.
I bought it used several years ago for $25 and it had those railed ring caps.
I called Burris and told them if I showed up at the club with those tacticalized rail thingies the boys would cancel my membership. The CS gal laughed and sent me regular caps for free. Burris has a good CS dept from my experience.

I tried smooth in the front and rail in the back when I first mounted it. It now just has the two smooth covers.

If the current models are that much better at light transmission than the ones I own (bought about 8 years ago) then they would be truly impressive. The ones I have actually make things look brighter when the sun is sinking. I can look with my naked eye and it will be darker than it is when I look through the scope. I don't know how that's even possible but it is what I see. That's the most impressible aspect of the ProStaff scopes I own.

I just looked up an ad for the scopes I have (I bookmarked the ad years ago when I bought one of the scopes) and it does rate the light transmission at 90%.

Used to be, the Prostaff was the introductory line of scopes, the Buckmasters the midline, and the Monarch the upper end line.

Then a few years back, the Buckmasters became the lower end, and the Prostaffs the mid line.

Some of their speciality optics don't mention specifically what line they are associated with, but looking at price and specs usually gives you a good idea.

I have an older Buckmaster 4-14x40 scope, and while good, it does not seem any brighter or clearer than then a similar new Prostaff a friend has on his rifle. That Buckmaster cost me $300 back then, and my friend paid about $100 less for his new Prostaff.

Well I haven't had a chance to mount mine yet but I was playing around with it an I was able to see clearly 2 inch mail box numbers at about 150 yards on 12x. Can't wait to see how is does on the range.

The Monarch was the scope everyone wanted back then. The Buckmaster was seen as not being much better than the ProStaff. And it was possible to find deals on the Monarch that put it in competition with the Buckmaster. So really most people either went with the ProStaff or the Monarch.
