Default Sitting-in using lower 1/3 Co-witness?

Have new Sport II with A-2 front sight, flip up rear sight...Will be putting red dot on and want to use lower 1/3 for a less cluttered view.
Have done absolute before on 15-22 that has Magpul flip sights front and rear but not sure how to sight in red dot on this one. BUIS have been zeroed.

Eventually want to change hand grip and remove A-2 and replace with flip up front sight.

Start by adjusting the red dot to the tip of the front sight post while looking through the rear sight aperture. You can do that at home. When you get to the range go from there using any zero you want... same zero as irons or whatever. I zero my irons and red dot both at 50yds. I use a lower 1/3 riser. No matter if you use a lower 1/3 or absolute riser, if you use the same zero the red dot will still be on the tip of the from sight post when looking through the rear sight aperture. The only difference is with the lower 1/3 the irons and dot will be in the lower part of the tube. There is no right/wrong zero for lower 1/3 or absolute.

Looking through the rear sight aperture.... this would be an illustration of a rifle with irons and red dot using the same zero. Lower 1/3.

And this would be an illustration of the same rifle, same irons, same red dot, same zero, same lower 1/3 riser, but the shooter looking over the irons through the center of the tube.

This would be an illustration of the same rifle, same irons, same red dot but with an absolute riser and looking though the rear sight aperture.

Only question I have is if you have a M&P 15-22 set up for absolute, why would you set up your 5.56 rifle differently? The 15-22 mimics the Sport very well to use as a trainer. I would recommend setting them both up the same... even if that means buying a new riser for the .22.

Eventually I want to have the Sport like the 15-22...with Magpul flip sites...can't afford to do that right now so have to live with the A-2 sight on the Sport.

Makes sense to me.

Funny... I had written a long reply thinking you were talking about using same zeros... I got to get my glasses fixed.

Oops... bought the wrong Sport model! They have an optics ready version without the A-2 sight.

But really, after you shoot it a bit, you will get to where you don't notice the A-2 tower.

I removed the rear sight and front post on my AR Sport II. I use a red dot, glass scope or night vision scope and I don't want any distractions in the view. And if that's not enough, I have a back up laser for point and shoot needs at close range. Hogging in this area requires flexibility.

I thought about getting a new gas block and eliminating the front sight altogether but I like having the option of going back to stock.

I am confused... how did you remove the front sight, but didn't get a new gas block and left the ability to return to stock? Do you mean that you just removed the sight post itself, but left the A-2 tower in place?

Yes, I unscrewed the front sight post.
Meaning he just took out the actual post. The sight frame is still there and still in his view.

Removing the front front sight post/gas block and installing a low profile gas block is pretty easy. Returning to stock is just as easy.

This would be true if everyone loved the optics ready hand guard, I don't and would want to change it out if that would have been the model I bought.

It's cheaper to get the A2 sport II and swap in a low profile gas block with the free float hand guard you really want.

That is exactly what I want to do. I like how the 15-22 came. Now it's trying to decide which free float hand guard to choose from the hundreds available.

Good luck with that, there are tons out there. Me personally, I love the Troy rails.

If the objective is just to not have an A2 front sight in your way, the optics ready is a viable solution. Don't like the hand guard, throw on a drop in quad rail, or a Magpul hand guard... no different than the Sport.

Going free float is a whole different ball game. Wish S&W would offer a M&P 15 Sport OEM! No hand guard, no stock, low profile gas block. Offer at the same price as the Sport and it would sell!
