Default Just Ordered an M&P Sport II and I'm Cool (New Member)

Hello from Texas my fellow M&P Madmen!

It has been a really crazy year for me and guns. Why? Because prior until a few months ago, I didn't own any guns and never have, except a cheap Wal-Mart Shotgun I bought 15 years ago that I haven't shot in 10 years.

OK, we'll get to the M&P, since it's an M&P Forum, but the quick run-down. I bought my first hand gun in March and I haven't even shot the damn thing yet. My wife also doesn't even know I have it, YET! She will, but I am trying to break her in to the idea nice and easy. I got a Springfield 9mm XD Mod.2 4" Bi-Tone. Springfield had an awesome promotion and I received 3 extra magazines, a holster, and a mag holder free.

I also ALREADY bought 500 rounds of Federal 9MM Ammo, a Magula Mag Speed Loader, a Stream-Light TLR2-HL-G (800 Lumen tactical weapons light, with strobe, and a green laser, and some ear muffs. I can get carried away sometimes, remember, haven't even shot the gun yet!

I have been looking at AR's and started to get the "ITCH" last year and started watching videos, etc. I was between the Ruger AR556 & Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport II. So Yesterday I say to myself, I am getting it and I "pulled the trigger" (not actually, since I don't have the gun yet, and the hand gun I own hasn't even been fired 1 time yet)

I was happy as I got it for $499, with Free Shipping! The place I'm having it shipped to does the fire-arm transfers for $10.

OK, so in the last 24 hours I have already bought several extras for my AR15, and I haven't even got the rifle yet.

I got the following:

-500 rounds of PMC Bronze .223 Remington 55GR FMJ-BT Ammunition ($5.99 per box of 20).

-Bushnell TRS-32 5 MOA Red Dot with Mount. Had an eBay $15 Memorial Day Coupon and paid $74.99, PLUS Bushnell has a 25% rebate and with another 2% off on my CC, it will be $55.00.

-Got (10) D&H 5.56 30rd Aluminum Magazines from Palmetto State Armory ($7.99 each and free shipping). I hope these work well with my M&P Sport II?

-Just ordered a 42" Plano All Weather Tactical Hard Shell Gun Case for my AR15 (cost only $56.00). I almost got the 36", would have fit better, BUT the 42" will allow me to keep mags, and other accesories, maybe even my XD Mod.2 9MM handgun. It has that foam you "Pick Away" at so it outlines each item in the case, for the money, it's a good deal, but I kind of wished I got the 36" case, just because it's more compact.

I am excited and can't wait to shoot the gun. Maybe I should have got a SCOPE instead of that Red Dot?

Anything else I should Buy? (Bi-Pod, Gun Sling, etc.?)

Thanks and I am excited to be a part of this group!

The Bandit...................

first of all, welcome!

PMC Bronze, decent plinking ammo, good choice. TRS25? I have one on one of my Ruger 22 target pistols. Good choice. D&H mags? Good choice.

Thumbs up

Welcome aboard!
Invest in ammo, more ammo, and then some more ammo.
I sure hope your wife doesn't have a SNOWFLAKE approach to your gun buying!

Welcome
Sounds like you have plenty of "stuff" you need to get to the range Brother. Also as already stated, more ammo and training. Usually one of the guys behind the counter at the range will walk you through everything as you stated you haven't even shot your XD yet. You can learn a lot from YouTube but hands on is different.

Sounds good.

The D&H magazines work well. I've used them for years. The TRS 32 is a reliable inexpensive red dot. I have one for my son's 15-22. Bought it about four years ago for considerably more than you paid. They are discontinued, I think, but it should do the job for you.

Now, what are you waiting for? Get out and shoot those guns!

Thanks guys, I ALMOST got 1,000 rounds of that PMC .223 Ammo, BUT, I figured before I go crazy, I should shoot some first. What other AMMO is good? I get confused about 5.56 and .223?

I read you can shoot .223 through a 5.56 barrel, but you can't shoot 5.56 through a .223 barrel? I thought the gun was compatible with BOTH .223/5.56?

Besides Bronze PMC .223 FMJ, WHAT else is a Good Round to Shoot with the M&P Sport II?

I am NOT sure WHY I got the Red Dot? With all the rebates and $15 off coupon, it was hard to pass up for $55.

SCOPES????????????????????????????????

Been looking at Scopes and trying to decide what is a good on to buy? Also, REAL SCOPE Better? I don't know exactly what I want, but don't want to spend more than $250, and less would be better. However, if there is something so awesome that it warrants spending more, I could. Seems like there are some decent scopes for under $150?

Some Scopes I was considering (from reading about them):

1. Nikon P-223 3-9x40 Mate BDC 600 ($165)

2. Bushnell Optics 1-4x 24mm Throw Down PCL, FFP Illuminated BTR(AR 223) ($225)

3. Primary Arms 4-14X Tactical Scope with Front Focal Plane PA4-14XFFP ($229)

4.

Cheapys!

1. Simmons 511039 3 - 9 x 32mm .22 Mag(R) Matte Black Riflescope ($31.99)

2. CVLIFE Hunting Rifle Scope 6-24x50 AOE Red and Green Illuminated Crosshair & Free Mount ($39.99 WOW Cheap!!!)

3. Beileshi 6-24X50mm AOEG Optics Hunting Rifle Scope Red/Green Illuminated Crosshair Gun Scope With Flip Up Scope Covers ($48.99)

Welcome to the club... now put away the credit card unless you are buying more ammo, range fees, or classes.

Seriously, forget about scopes, red dots, and any other whiz bang doo-dad you see hanging off of ARs on the net. Go shoot the rifle with the sights it came with. Learn how to operate the rifle and hit what you are aiming at. After you go through those first 500 rounds, then you can start thinking about how you want to set the rifle up.

Sounds like you're having a lot of fun.

The purpose of the rifle and how you intend to use it should dictate the type of gear and optics. Without that nailed down, you'll be endlessly bouncing around like a ping-pong ball between 1x red dots and 24x scopes like you are now. Take a deep breath and define the role of the rifle. Range toy, self defense, hunting, bench shooting...

For example-- are you one of those guys who wants to sit at a bench and agonize over how accurate your groups are on paper, or will you be shooting offhand and want fast target acquisition.. or or or...

With all those new guns I hope you will take your time developing and practicing strong safe handling and and marksmanship skills. Thoroughly learn safe manual of arms skills.
I realize that in your excitement that this is sound advise.
Enjoy your new rifle but remember to get to know it and its operation well and always be safe.
Good luck
Jim

I'm really just trying to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and MOre Practice!!!!!

I'm Practicing Looking in the mirror so I can make Cool Faces when I shoot! I have been working on 3 or 4 faces so far. here they are in no particular order:

1. "You talkin' to Me"? (You just repeat this over and over again)

2. "Kiss my Grits" (Just look mean and GRIT your teeth)

3. Texas Tornado (You stare the person down for 5 seconds, then just start twisting in circles as fast as you can, over and over, like a Tornado, just fire whenever you can before you get dizzy and fall over.

4. Crooked Mule (Stick your front teeth over your bottom lip, and start screaming, Hee-Haw, Hee-Haw, Hee-Haw.............

5. Donkey Show (Wear a Cape, and raise up 1 of the sides of the cape with your right arm, then do the same with your left, and rotate back and forth. When the Cape is at full height, it will look like you are walking up to a circus tent, like the ones they have out front at a Donkey Show in Mexico.

I am also practicing things I saw in movies, like holding the gun sideways wand other things like that. Like I said, Practice, Practice, Practice. And never put your finger on the trigger, until you are ready to shoot.

OK Sorry..................... That was ridiculous. I will get back on track with the next post!

I know, I need to get out and go shoot my guns, before I worry about buying all the extras, but it is SO FUN! It also takes all your money!

Nobody's going to lose an eye. I am SAFE. I have shot a gun before, but not the ones I bought, yet. I am very careful and when I do have a gun around me, I am overly cautious, like we ALL should be.

I do need some help, and a few of my neighbors own hand guns and one just bought an AR15 several weeks ago. My plan is to go to the range with him my first time.

Just so he can show me the ropes, explain things to me, show me how to shoot and do things in a safe manner. I don't want to go by myself the first time. My wife KNOWS I have AMMO. I got it delivered to the house, and she was like, WHAT???? I said it's to go shooting at the range with my neighbor, ammo ain't cheap! After I got with him and another guy (both in a church group I am in), then I can say I am ready to buy a gun, and if she says OK, then one will just magically show up one day, especially since I already have it.

If she says NO, then I will have to sell an XD Mod.2 9MM and a brand new M&P Sport II.

I also got a nice Gun Safe last month. I haven't set it up yet as it is in the garage and weighs 1,000 lbs. I need to get the thing moved inside, and I plan to put the guns in there. I am bolting it to the concrete slab and I bought it for something besides guns, but it is nice to have a place that is secure that my young daughter can't get into.

I think my AR15 should be here by early next week. I need to go track it. It wasn't ready to track yesterday, still showed processing.

All I'm gonna say is your better expose that credit card to some more light and get the wife some new clothes, shoes and purses to go with them. You might even throw in $500 cash and let her pick out some jewelry. It will help reduce your dog-house sentence and MAY extend your marriage.

I thought I was sneaky.
JK
My wife had always been opposed to having guns in the house. Until about five months ago when tragically one of our neighbors was killed in his driveway after surprising someone breaking into his house in the middle of the day. After hitting so close to home she agreed it was time that we made preparations to defend ourselves. So I got my first pistol, a SD9VE and have spent a lot of time at the range with it. Not long after that I got my CC permit and took advantage of SW rebate and got a Shield 9mm and it is my EDC. Then one day I rented a Ruger AR 556 and shot it at the range. Well you know what happens next I had to have my own AR. So I just got my first AR, M&P sport 15 ll. It is addictive and I share your enthusiasm, however my wife does know about all the guns I purchased but she hasn't said no more guns yet. Just Ordered an M&P Sport II and I'm Cool (New Member)

First thing tell your wife !! Secrets like these are never good in the end .. if you cover up this what else are you hiding will end up being in her thoughts !!

Slow down .. quit acting like a jock (#12) carrying concealed is serious it isn't a game .. CC holders are low key .. get some training and learn your states laws on carrying your weapon ..

Be Safe !!

I got carried away and next thing I know, Donkey Show came out of my mouth and onto the screen. I do appologize and this thread is serious, it just had a short run of humor, that may have went overboard. I wish my Gun was Over Boared OUT!

See, it can happen in a flash. Let's get back to my M&P Sport II and please tell me if there is anything else I need to know, do, before I go shooting?

Has your friend with the AR shot much? If he just got it a few weeks ago he may need training as well. I am certainly no expert as I just got mine. I've shot at the range on a rental several times and I am some what comfortable. I know I need a lot of range time and I'm planning on getting familiar with the rifle inside and out then think about adding to it. The only thing I may do early on is a red dot but I want to be proficient with the iron sites first.

Again, I know I came across (in a few sections) as a 17 year old crazy fool/Jock, but I am smart and know what is going on, I was just letting loose. I am a commercial banker at a large bank and I am not, at this point planning to Concealed Carry, but I will likely do so in the future, just to be safe.

I DO feel bad about getting the gun without telling my wife. We've been married 18 years and she's pretty nice, but she just doesn't like guns and didn't grow up around them. Other nice people we know having guns, helps her accept them a little more. I think she is going to be OK with it, but she will likely not want to shoot it ever.

I am SERIOUS when it comes to guns and really do want advice. Let's all just laugh and move on. I knew it was going off the rails as soon as the part about the Donkey Show was written.

I just called and the gun is shipping TODAY from Florida! I got it at GunBuyers for $499.

My XD 9MM I got from GrabaGun. They have great prices, BUT I am local, so I had to pay tax. I picked it up in person so it was no shipping, and it was still overall the best deal even with tax, as they did the transfer for free.

I would imagine, the AR15 is going to be much more fun to shoot, than my 9mm?

Also, do people shoot their AR15's inside at gun ranges frequently? I would rather try to find an outdoor range somewhere. I have NEVER been to a range before. I was reading up on the proper range etiquette, but again, I plan to go with a friend to help me navigate the first time.

Thanks again for all the information guys! I appreciate it!

Great Advice!!!!!!!!!! My pistol (where this all started) was on sale and they had that Gear Up Promotion with all the Free Mags, so I just got excited and grabbed it. I figured I can always sell it IF she really wants me to.

I have had it over 2 1/2 months, so the best resolution would be for her to get comfortable and say it's OK for me to get a gun (for home protection, and for fun shooting at range and outside).

I mean I want to tell her, but I have had it so long now, it would be scary to tell her. I haven't even shot it yet. All my ammo is locked separate from the gun. I have a 7 year old daughter, and she is scared of toy guns. I think that is a good thing, for now. At least she knows guns can be very dangerous.

Eventually, I would like to get her to go to the range with me in a controlled setting, so she can learn to properly respect guns, learn how to safely handle them, and so she is informed so she isn't scared of a gun, but knows never to touch one unless I am with her.

The range I go to is an indoor range and kind of small, only 23 yards and 6 lanes. Great bunch of guys there and kind of off the beaten path so I very rarely have to wait for a lane. It's great for handguns and short range AR action, I too will be looking for an outdoor range though.

You could start by learning the fundamentals of marksmanship, maybe disassembly and re-assembly if you don't already know, and then immediate action drills for a misfire.

Appreciate all the answers and advice.

I Watched how to do a field strip for my Springfield XD Mod.2 9MM Pistol and last night watched a video for the M&P, but haven't actually done it yet.

For mis-fires, I learned about Tap, Rack, and Bang, but haven't tried it yet. I also bought snap caps for my 9mm so I can practice. Imagine that? Snap Caps....Shouldn't surprise anyone, I bought everything else for the gun, right? So why not some snap caps.

I use Bandit for many forum handles. The quick story is I have an 01 C5 Corvette and was on a Corvette Forum. I used the name 2001 Red Coupe, but it was taken, so I added "Bandit". Bandit sounded cool so I just went with it.

I honestly need TIME to practice and I KNOW watching videos doesn't count, BUT, I have been watching and learning for a long time, so I have most of the basic concepts down, just need to put them into action and get some barrel time under my belt!

Which should I shoot first? My 9MM Pistol or my AR15? The AR15 seems like it would be the Grand Finale!

Off to pick up my daughter and her class-mate at school and take them to the Mall for a Build A Bear Party for Girl Scouts. They sold so many darn cookies, they won a party.

See Y'all Soon!

The Bandit..........................

Besides Bronze PMC .223 FMJ, WHAT else is a Good Round to Shoot with the M&P Sport II?
A lot of the members here, including myself, buy their ammo from SGammo.com
They sell 1K rounds of WOLF POLYFORMANCE 5.56 55 gr. shipped to your front door for about $215! WOLF in the brass case is about $295, 1K rounds, shipped to your front door.
Your Sport II can shoot both .223 and 5.56 ammo.

Yea...yer a nut!!!

Welcome to the circus, you'll fit right in. Youve already managed to keep the flyin monkeys circling in a holding pattern

I like GrabGun too. Like to deal with Chris at the counter. Bought several there in the last couple years.

Your in Dallas, had that figured Lotsa good ranges in Dallas. I like ShootSmart in Grand Prairie, its convenient for me comin into town from the south and also convenient to GrabaGun.

Nothing to know about the AR. Clean Lube and reassemble when you get it and shoosdacrapoutta it

Welcome to the fun world of firearms. I'm not hooked. Really. I can quit any time I want. So far I haven't wanted to in almost 55 years but I could quit.

One thing and this is serious. What type of case did you buy? Unless it has foam specifically designed for long term storage I would NOT keep anything in it for storage. Cases are for taking the gun to the range. At least most of them are. The kind that doesn't hold moisture in the foam is a lot more expensive. The foam will hold moisture right against your gun and there is a very good chance it will cause rust to appear. Sometimes it will cause rust in a matter of days. I've known of people that put a brand new gun in a foam lined case and left it there 6 months. When they opened the case they found a totally rusted gun.

The M&P Sport II seems to be treated pretty well so rust shouldn't come easy but those cases are the absolute worst place for long term storage. That would even apply to aluminum mags IMO because they will have a steel spring inside. Foam kills firearms. You could very well end up with a gun that looks like this if you store it a Plano case or anything not designed to deal with moisture.

Welcome.

I didn't see a cleaning kit listed. You neded one of those.

Apart from that, No, you don't need to buy anything else. What you need to do now is get some range time and start learning how to properly, accurately and safely shoot what you already have.

In the Army we use S P O R T S

Slap the magazine
Pull the charging handle
Observe the chamber
Release the bolt
Tap the forward assist
Squeeze the trigger

It's something you can practice without ammo in your home, get it into your muscle memory and when you have a misfire you'll react instead of trying to figure out why your weapon didn't fire.

Hey Guys, I ordered that Plano Hard Shell Gun CASE last Night at 10 pm from Amazon, it shows up on my door tonight at 7PM! WOW!!!

Its the Plano All Weather Tactical Rifle Case 42", it is Very Nice for $57! It has that PICK AWAY foam, so you can get a near perfect outline of your gun, scope, ammo, anything!

I was Between the 36" and 42". I KNEW the 36" would be more compact and fit the M&P Sport perfect, the 42" would have enough room to add my 9MM Pistol, magazines, and scope, etc etc. The 42" IS NICE, but it is a little large. The 36" cost MORE than the 42"? Oh well, it's a GREAT CASE for the Money and the M&P doesn't come with anything, except a cardboard box!

Here is the Link for the 42" for $57.00

Link for 36" Version $69.99

Seriously, if you're serious, slow down. You don't even have the gun yet and you're buying all this extra stuff. Shoot the gun first. Then decide if you need anything else.

The cleaning kit is the only accessory you need right away.

I lurked here for a while before I joined up. For me, the best advice I heard and actually took was to "shoot the snot out of it first". Other good advice was to get some good cleaning supplies and lube and learn the AR-15 platform (disassembly, assembly etc). There is some great info on this site about the M&P-15. Welcome to the club!

Funny you mentioned that. I responded in my thread (I know there are quite a few long-winded responses from me in this thread), that I actually Bought a Gun Safe last month and got it delivered 3 weeks ago. I have been looking to get a Safe fora few years and I finally got one. It is better than the one you will find at any sporting good store. But, there are much better ones as well, all they take is more money to buy them!

For ME, this one wasn't Cheap, but it's a great value for the specs, has 10 Gauge Steel, and is not only functional, it's absolutely gorgeous and has a beautiful high gloss paint job on it! The least of my criteria, BUT, I am glad it looks as nice as it does!

I actually bought the safe to store other things besides Guns, but now it will serve dual roles. I Had 1 gun, a Wal-Mart Shotgun for the last 20 years, and then in 2017 I bought my 9MM and AR15, so I only have 3 guns total. I bought a 39 Gun Safe.

It is sitting out in my garage for now. I had FREE Garage Delivery and I was going to PAY the guy to bring it inside, BUT he didn't have the right equipment to do the job, he had a Pallet Jack and my Safe weighs almost 1,000 lbs. There was no way to get the Pallet Jack where it needed to go. I realized close to 1,000 lbs. is heavier than you'd think! It's delivered on a Wooden Pallet! I plan to get some Rifle Rods for the safe. I need help getting it inside (may have to hire a safe mover, but I'm cheap, but it's not worth getting crushed over). I decided I am 100% bolting it through the bottom of the Safe to my concrete Slab! That thing ain't moving anywhere! If anyone breaks in and tries to steal it, I will say hold on a minute, let me go in the safe real quick and grab my AR15. Or I will use my Springfield XD with the Stream-Light 800 Lumen Tactical Light and shine the Green Laser on them to see if that changes their mind. If not, I'm making a break for it, hopping the fence, and looking for a tree to hide in.

Here are the Specs on my Safe

59'' x 39'' x 27'' w/ handle 930 lbs

As for Premium Heavy-Duty Gun Safes, the 1st Class Steel built BR Series 39 Gun 2-Hour Fire Gun Safe is a great choice for Gun Storage and Fire Protection. I bought (2) of these gun cases last year. They replaced some very old KOLPIN gun cases that are not made any more.

I decided I am 100% bolting it through the bottom of the Safe to my concrete Slab!
I hope I don't sound like a broken record here but you do know you can't sit your safe directly on concrete don't you? It will rust the bottom of the safe out. There has to be something between the steel and the concrete. Mine sits on some wood out in my garage. The house I'm living in currently wasn't made for moving safes inside. As soon as I come in the door I have to turn one way or the other and there isn't room to turn a safe. I had it in my basement in the last house I lived in. I hope to be back in my house soon with the safe on a more permanent foundation.

Yup, that went right past me.

I can see hiding a rifle and pistol from your wife (I know you haven't received your rifle yet), but how do you hide or explain needing a weapons safe?

The one pictured is three times bigger than my stack on safe and I have x3 AR's, x3 pistols and a 12ga shotgun in mine. It took three of us just to get it into the downstairs guestroom.

Your wife must have seen it?

To be honest, my first thought when I started reading your comments was that you were a "Troll".

The AR world has a bunch of snobs and to some of them a $400-600 rifle isn't up to par.

I figured it was one of them, that got bored, and decided to join to make fun of the Sport owners for a while.

I have no issues with my sport II, but still own a BCM and Daniels Defense.

But in your defense, I was pretty excited "owning" my first AR as well!

Okay, I found it.

I think what happened was I made it half way through the "looking at myself in the mirror" post and stopped reading.

I have forced myself to read through the rest and believe I'm up to date on all subjects.

Just remember that a lot of people swore Hondas and Toyotas were junk cars at one point. Then the US auto industry was brought to it's knees by those cars. There's always someone willing to think if they paid more it must be better. True sometimes but not always. I have some really nice expensive guns and I have some really nice not so expensive guns. I like all I have. Of course if I didn't like something I sold it or gave it away. But I'll never look down my nose at a brand of rifle or a model of a rifle unless it is clear that they are inferior. I have some guns that if I mentioned their name I can hear the hoots and jeers already. But those guns work nearly perfect and I wouldn't trade them for guns that cost far more. One even has a recall out on it dealing with a safety issue if it's dropped. I keep it where it will never be dropped because the thing is incredibly reliable and even more accurate. And it's a brand that people love to hate. I've had more trouble out of my Sig P220 than I have that pistol.

To the OP I have 3 pieces of advice:

1 get to the range and shoot your new firearms

2 bring your wife, you did buy an extra set of eye and ear protection for her, right?

3 you don't have enough ammo.

Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy your new guns. The xd is a good gun, you made a solid choice there. I own a windham bushmaster but I'm not a huge AR guy, so I can't really comment on the sport. Have fun.
