Default Factory Ca legal Sport II

Finally got to see one on the new state legal Sport II's.
M&P(R)15 SPORT™ II - CA COMPLIANT* | Smith & Wesson

Local Sportsmans Warehouse had one on sale. Normal price was 669.99, with the sale price of 569.99. Grip looks and feels like my 10.00 Strike Industries. Buttstock is pinned, and no muzzle device. Muzzle is not threaded. Ambi safety, and no bullet button. Looks like all major brand AR's have gone featureless. As they had a Saint and an AR556 that were featureless as well.

Looked at the pics and I don't understand how the grip works af all. Guess I will have to find a video. Went looking and only found a gun store vid. If anyone finds where they actually fire the gun I would be interested.

Problem we have out here is the legislature by definition made the standard grip an "evil feature". If you don't remove all "evil features" or mod the AR so you have a "fixed" mag, you have to register the AR with the state as an assault weapon. Once registered, you can only sell out of state or surrender it to the state- no leaving it to next of kin or gifting.

The fin on the grip changes how the weapon is held. You still have 4 fingers wrapped around the grip. However, the web of your hand between the thumb and index finger is now above the level of the trigger. And that's the key point. If the web is at or below the level of where the finger normally is on the trigger, it's a pistol grip.

As I mentioned above, the grip looks like what I have on my SportII. Takes a little rethinking and adjustment, but does work.

Without going into a long description, the "fin" on the grip makes it so your thumb can't be wrapped around the grip. Because of that, it's not a pistol grip which is one feature that makes it an assault weapon which is illegal.

The stupid is strong in the legislature here. The creativity of gun enthusiasts is stronger. It's still annoying that we have to go to these lengths.

Rather than fool around with that batwing thingie... I'd just abandon the AR platform and go with a standard rifle stock. Finally a reason to own a Mini-14.

Phil, not crazy about having the fin grip, but it does work. Springfield and Ruger both went with similar ideas. The only other option is to go the "fixed mag" route. There you have to break the rifle open to drop the mag. Or go with loading through the ejection port. And to me, either option makes dealing with jams a royal PIA.

Until such time Congress/SCOTUS mandates otherwise, those of us out here are left with limited choices. The factory rifles may be *****, but they do give us a choice. Just glad that we haven't been totally abandoned by the factories.

Don't lay this on Congress or SCOTUS. Your elected officials in California work for YOU. Enough California voters stand up, you can have whatever you want. Don't take it lying down. That's what they WANT you to do.

Hey guys,

It's the "compliant" model, but let's keep things focused on aspects of the gun, not gun control.
