MIL-SPEC: Do you know what it means?
I hear a lot of complaints that the M&P15 isn't "mil-spec". Why the complaints? Do you even know what mil-spec is? Do you realize that no AR is mil-spec?
I heard one person say that if it doesn't have an NSN (National Stock Number) it isn't mil-spec. That's simply not true. Corn Flakes has a NSN and there's no mil-spec for that.
The term is highly over used and far too often used by those that don't know what it even means.

My take:
it means a certain set of standards set for the part by the US military contract. Made by the lowest bidder as cheap as possible
That being said, the biggest issue I have found with ARs:
1. Faulty Magazines - replace
2. Improper Lubrication - depends on environment. I found in AZ slip 200 EWL is best but colder environments may vary
Then the mechanical:
3. Incorrect ejector tension - causes FTE double feeds. Replace with an aftermarket spring and or oring if needed
4. Incorrect gas tube length and size - a lot of budget consumer ones and home builds experience this and are overgassed you can determine right away if it is not ejecting from about 2:30-4:45 and can be corrected with number 5, fewer are under gassed and require gas block port realignment
5. Incorrect spring buffer combo - replace with combo that is correct to provide proper ejection pattern. This is my most common fix other than the ejector spring.
6. Incorrect chamber size - rare but can be reamed usually experience failures to eject with lacquered steel case ammo where the case is stuck in the chamber and needs to be forced out .
That is just the ones I have gone over for the many people who have asked me to look at their AR buys and builds over the past 20 years.
The properly built AR is a pretty hardy weapon system no matter what myths the AK crowd likes to spread.:

LOL........ I don't think anyone(civilian) can even buy a mil-spec M-16 or M-4 which are not a AR.. cus they are new guns (post 1968) that fire burst and/or full auto......... AR-15 are a non-mil spec civilian look alike!!!! AKA "Modern Sporting Rifle"
I own "several": Beretta 92s not a single one is Mil-spec........... mine are compacts,Centurions, Inox and Elite IIs.............. not one meets Mil-spec.......... barrels are too short...... wrong finish........ or in the Case of the Elite IIs .......just way too COOoool !!!!!!!

AK's can have their problems the same as AR's. Remember there are a lot of AK's floating around that were built from parts kits by people who really didn't know what they were doing. And they can look like AK's from various countries because they use some parts from those rifles.
Obviously some AK's are well built and robust. But others are trash. I know. I had one that I got as a 'bargain AK". Yeah right. About 500 rounds went through that rifle trying to make it right. It was hopeless.

Have posted before... little snippet from the article below.
American Rifleman | The MilSpec Definition
"Now if anyone has a vested interest in making you believe that their ARs are MilSpec, it would be Colt...
Yet Colt is the first to admit that their commercial ARs are not MilSpec! I submit to you, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, that you now have your second and final piece of conclusive evidence that there is no such thing as a MilSpec AR."

military specification # blah-blah blah- blah
It is a specific process that must be used during manufacturing. It could cover coatings, the coating applications, machinig methods or or just plain ol' anything. The SR 71 Blackbird had a problem with titanium bolt heads on the wings melting at operating temperatures... The culprit: minute traces of cadmium from the mechanics wrenches..... Mil-spec# (whatever) is born: wrenches used in assembly must be
made of 4140 stainless with no coatings and blah blah and so on.
Now you have the mil-spec 500$ government wrench.
I was on a Boeing project that called for a mil-spec coating that someone overlooked when bidding the job.
Called the Boeing engineer and explained that the coating costs 600$ a gallon. He cussed and said in colorful language " just paint them safety orange, its a fixture, we need to have our butt covered when some idiot trips over one.
Mil-spec is and could literally cover anything.
Anyone can assign any mil-spec to any blueprint... It gonna cost you big time tho

I often wondered what the heck people were asking about a gun being mil spec. It seems it could be a stupid question about a mass produced gun.
Gee now I can tell mechanics I have a mil spec wrench. Oh they would have to see it! LOL

Mil-spec is basically alot of nothing pertaining to civilian use guns.
Like a punk that overpaid someone to 'blueprint and balance' an engine. No way José... You wanna see a real blueprinted and balanced engine? Look under the hood of grandma's car. It was built to the factory print and specs.

Best definition iso far.
Really guys, if there is something specific to the M&P 15 fine, but just a general brawl over milspec isn't of much value here. We done em before... it just devolves into bickering.
