What is available to limit how far the action opens when shotgunning the at-15?

Agree on what he is asking. Haven't heard of or seen anything that limits how far it breaks open.

AR-15. AR-maglock came up with a braided para cord thingy. I thought I once saw some type of catch that went inside the lower. Yes A California thing

C'mon guys... obviously "AT" was a typo and he meant "AR"... if you look, the R key is right next to the T key, and he posted from an iPhone...

I've grown up shooting break open shotguns, so I understood exactly what he meant.

I agree that I have never seen anything that would limit how far the upper will pivot, but I've never looked for anything like that either. Never had the need... but our friends in California have to break the rifle open to load the magazine if the rifle is in certain configurations. I feel sorry for them... their situation is bad enough, no reason for us to pile on!

This will limit it, used for cleaning your rifle.

I doubt he is looking for something that he has to put on and take off each time... I think he wants something that stays on the rifle, linking the upper and lower together so that when the rear takedown pin is pulled, the upper does not pivot to where it is perpendicular to the lower... Wants it to open just enough to reload easily. I've never seen such a device though, and would think having the upper fully pivot out of the way would be easiest.

Hadn't been following the fixed mag setup since I went featureless. Checked out that armaglock strap, and it looks like it does the job. See a couple of issues with it though. Mainly, it adds one more thing that can be snagged. Also, they really don't clarify if it will work with a scope mount like the PEPR.

I'm still waiting for a link or picture to see what he's asking for. The item I posted limits how far the action opens, just like he asked in the OP.

What is trying to be done here?

I have one of the devices I posted because it came with the kit I ordered, never saw a use for it until I saw this post.

I'm guessing it's unrelated to what he's asking for?

Wait a minute, in California you have to pivot the upper to reload? I thought the bullet button was the thing in CA.

He's looking for something kinda like this... AR TETHER – 5 Inch – ARMagLock – Fixed Magazine Lock & Release Kit

To be compliant with California law, if his gun is not featureless, he has to make it where the magazine can not be removed unless the upper and lower are disconnected. One way to do that is use a mag release button that has an arm on it that pushes against the upper and does not allow the mag to be released with the upper in place. But what he wants to do is to just open the upper enough to release the magazine, not pivot all the way forward...

I would probably look into this if I were in that situation...

I'm still new to civilian AR's, Thanks for clarifying. I'm sure these rules in Cali cut down on crime significantly!

You're behind the times. They changed the definition of an assault rifle. Now you have to disassemble the receiver to remove the mag.

Nope. They haven't shown a single statistic that has been reduced by any of these laws. In the one case where an AR was used in a crime, it was an illegal AR anyway.

rawhog,
How about some clarification? Why do you need to limit the amount the AR opens? What do you mean by "shotgunning" the rifle?

Shotgunning means to open the action after pulling the takedown pin. When using the ar mag lock the action only needs to pivot very slightly to eject the magazine. The tether that has been mentioned would work. I was trying to find something a bit more elegant

This is the operation of the AR Maglock for California compliance.

What the OP is asking about is something that limits hinge movement upper/lower once the rear pin is pulled. He referenced a "tether" but was asking if anyone knew of something a bit better than a rope hanging on his rifle like this.

Yes, I'm aware of how the new AR Maglock works. I've just not heard it called "shotgunning" before. And, yes, I wouldn't want a rope hanging off my gun either.

The amount the gun pivots doesn't seem to be a deterrent to me. However, I now have a better understanding of what and why someone might want this. I'm going to put some thought into it. I have an idea, but I'll have to see if I can make it.

Am I the only one on this board that shoots one of these?

Upper is hinged to lower and pivots when released from the rear, just like on a break open shotgun...

Hopefully your idea will work and you can make some money off of it
