For Practical Rifle discipline shooting close in and out to 100 yds., ...which is better?

I prefer the red dot at that range. But it depends on what you are practicing for? I practice for self defense in most cases. With the red dot I can acquire my intended target much faster than the scope...Imo.
So I guess it depends on what you plan to do with your rifle.

"Better" is relative to the shooter's criteria.

The below are major considerations to ponder.

Unlimited eye relief
Red dot - yes
Prism - no

Co-witness with irons
Red dot - yes
Prism - no

Etched reticle (reticle use absent battery)
Red dot - no
Prism - yes

Eyepiece focus
Red dot - no
Prism - yes (not all)

Accommodating to astigmatism and other eye irregularities
Red dot - no
Prism - yes

Magnification levels
Red dot - 1x
Prism - 1x through low levels (generally all fixed)

So... one or more of the above could be a deal breaker for the shooter one way or the other.

Red dots cover 2-3 MOA. Pin point aiming is sacrificed for rapid target acquisition. What's your goal?

With the windage and elevation adjustments., just like any other optic.

Prior to going to the range.... If it's a 1x and your irons are zeroed you should be able to see the front post well enough to adjust the reticle to be on paper. Or... you can remove the lower, set the upper on something stable, look through the bore and adjusting accordingly. Or... laser bore sighter.

I don't fool with any of it. I just aim at a rock or weed on a dirt bank, see the splat and adjust accordingly. Then paper for precise zero.
