Default Sport II shipped for $449 no CC fees

Smoky Mountain Guns & Ammo - Smith and Wesson 10202 M&P15 SPTII 556NATO 16" 30RD BLK

It is hard to beat this rifle for a basic carbine at this price.

I spent half of that ordering parts I need to finish out my son's rifle... nothing extravagant either, PSA receiver extension kit with MOE stock, MOE grip, Magpul BUS, etc...

Could you not have bought a rifle with those parts installed as OEM or at least a lot of them? I don't see the point of buying a rifle that you don't want then buying more parts to change it and tossing the other parts you paid for. You could have built your own for that matter.

I still think the Sport II is an excellent value especially at this price. There are other good rifles with those parts you mention. I paid $650 for one plus a really nice range bag just recently. It had a lot of the parts you mentioned. It was built locally by someone with a very good reputation for doing it right. And it was cheaper than buying a Sport II and replacing the parts with the upgrades you listed.

This is a true build, not buying a rifle and swapping parts... well, at least the lower. I started accumulating things for it a couple of years ago. It was his motivation to finish his Eagle Scout. The lower has a Calico Jack emblem on it, since his high school mascot is Pirates... too bad he has now graduated, doesn't seem as cool of an idea as it did when he was a freshman.

But at any rate, yes, I agree... if you are not building a rifle for a specific task, you may be able to buy at the same price as build for the same features.

You can't put a price on the time you spend with your child!
Nice to see parents do something like building a rifle with there kids instead of playing video games with them.....Great Job!!

Thanks for the kind words, but my "child" is 18 and headed off to college. This is his gift for earning his Eagle Scout...

I've seen this point of view tossed around a number of times since I've been here. Every time someone says they changed something up on a Sport, this comes about. Which is fine. But every time, I'd like the one that posted it to post their entire parts list and price plus shipping/tax below it, as well as where it came from. Might give anyone looking to build a rifle some insight into any future purchases. On the adverse of that, a year or so down the line if they try to sell it, you tell them its a Smith & Wesson Sport with whatever stock/trigger/etc. and they say "OK". Easier than telling them its a Heinz 57 that you slapped together with the cheapest parts you could find from 5 or 6 different companies. A totally different point of view there, but still a legitimate one.

I have 2 AR's. I have a Sport and one built by a local guy who used quality parts mostly from Aero Precision. Clearly the one built is a more expensive rifle but to many people the Sport would be their choice because they don't know the parts inside the built rifle and they don't get a warranty all from one company.

I like both of these rifles (wouldn't have them I guess if I didn't). But it's good I'm not looking to sell the built rifle because I wouldn't even know how much to ask for it. I don't want to sell it though so it's not a problem. I know it's a well built rifle because I trust the source that I got it from.

I have a similar "problem". My AR 556 is a frankengun built by a range buddy. I would not know how to even describe all the parts.

Still only 489. Good price even after the sale.

For the DFW crowd CrazyGunDealer is advertising them at 399.

I can tell from experience...Enjoy all the time you can get with them because pretty soon their time is like everyone else..Busy!
And for him to make eagle scout says a lot about you as a parent and mentor...Good work!
