Default Sport 2

Zeroed my new Sport 2 today out to 200m (12" gong) on both paper and steel with both red dot and factory BUIS. All shooting done from military prone.

Bought it new (including shipping) for the same price as a Norinco. What's not to like?

Like my earlier Sport 1, it has an acceptable military grade trigger, but could benefit from an after market unit.

The Sport 1 will stay mounted with a scope and the newer model with red dot. That way I've got my druthers, but I really like the red dot better.

That's three &W AR15s in the family now. We've discovered you can't just have one ......

Default RDS

I have a Bushnell TRS 32 on it. My wife also has one on hers.

I played with several red dot sights and found the reticle of many to be too busy for my liking. Simple is good. It co-witnesses with the factory rear sight just fine.

When I had it on my Sport 1, I was able to hit the 300m gong from prone. More I don't need or expect. If and when it dies, I'll consider a more sophisticated sight.

When I bought my Tavor, it came fitted with a Bushnell TRS 25. The seller told me it was his preferred sight for that rifle. I see no reason to remove it as it does what I need it to do.

I don't play the "mine is better and more expensive than yours" game.

I have red dots on both of my AR's. To me they only make sense for a carbine with the high capacity of an AR. It's more of a shoot quick and often type rifle. I have target rifles that shoot the same ammo much more accurate. There's no way either of my AR's will match what my bolt action .223 rifle will do. That thing will shoot 5" groups at 500 yards. I've shot a lot of AR's on the same range. None of them could hit a man size target consistently at that range. I'm sure some will but they cost considerably more than what I own. And again this is a battle style carbine. It's great for taking on a pack of feral dogs (the animals most likely to kill you in most parts of the USA - I was chased by a pack of them one day all dobermans - a mother and pups - luckily I was on my ATV so they couldn't catch me - I just read where some guy got killed by a pack not too far from where I live).

That's just my opinion of course. If a person wants to use a scope on an AR I am sure they won't consult with me first.

I put a Bushnell AR/223 3-9X 40mm scope on my Sport 1 and it turned a light, handy carbine into an unwieldy club. I may take it off and sell it to someone I don't like.

I did it because I wanted to see what difference it would make accuracy wise. It wasn't worth the effort. I shoot just as well with the red dot and I like keeping both eyes open.

Maybe if I shot it from the bench, but that doesn't compute with an AR15.

One of my buds has a high end AR15 decked out with a high end scope, and other add ons, including a muzzle brake that makes it very loud. It weighs as much if not more than my Garand!

I'm in agreement on the "more better, more expensive" thing. Have a Sightmark M-Spec on my Sport II. Most folks laugh off Sightmark. I like the 2MOA dot to actually not completely eclipse a small target at 100yds, and the night vision (which I don't have any night vision) option to dim down at night where its not too overly bright to use with a light to plug armadillos on the property with. And it weighs similar to that of the old coveted Vortex Strikefire (which I have on a 10-22 for speed steel) that so many praise because Vortex is the cool name the last few years.

I have noticed that the AR15 genre lends itself to the cool, "trending" factor when it comes to branding.
When I first joined up on a Canadian AR15 forum, I assumed that most of these guys were hot shot 'operators' and competitors. Turns out they just liked the type and found it easy to retro fit their rifles/carbines with brand name goodies.
The real shooters were out on the range burning up rounds with pretty basic rifles.

A shooting coach is ex ST6. You can hand him any long rifle, and he gets results. Don't get hung up on the bolt-ons. Even his beat up RPK can solve problems when used properly.

Bushnells are great until they are not. They are low cost and lower quality but that does not mean they will not work. The problem I see with all red dot or electronic sights is that you never know when they will go bad. IIRC Bushnell had a run with QC issues when made some changes around 2012 but seem to have cleared those up. If you are punching paper at the range and it dies no big deal. In other situations it might be more of an issue. Either way no need to start a pissing contest.

Agreed. Like I said, when the Bushnells die, they get replaced with something higher up the ladder.

It was more important to me at the time to get out shooting than to go for bragging rights on gear.

I'll never own an aimpoint. I'll never pay $700 for a red dot. I don't even own a solid riflescope of that price. If I was in the military and battery life or something could make a difference in me being dead the next day, yeah. But I work for a trucking company and shoot in my backyard. I'm not pretending, and not rich enough to not spend the difference on something else I want. But thats my opinion and my situation. Fine to have that stuff if its within your means. Stupid to me if you live paycheck to paycheck and are just trying to keep up with the Joneses. Good stuff, just not in my ballpark.

I have heard that Bushnell quality suffered in recent times. I haven't bought any Bushnell products in the last 15yrs. With that said, my main deer slayer is a Win. mod 94 with a top mounted Bushnell Lite Site 3x9. I bought them both new in 1984 with money I made hauling hay. They both still work just fine and I've been using them to put 3 to 5 deer in the freezer every year for over 30yrs now. Only time I've had to re-zero that scope is when I change ammo. It's never been off the gun and the Led still works like new.
Most of my hunting buddies use .300 or 7mm magnums with Leupold or Simmons , etc. Some like to pick on my old 30-30 and Bushnell. I just laugh back and point out that they can spend all the money they want and make more noise, but they don't put any more meat on the table than I do!

Looks like I'm not the only one who doesn't fall for the latest trending rifle, calibre or optic.

Back in the day when I was much into IPSC, we had a Phillipino millionaire in the club who wanted to buy his way into "A" class. He paid a top maker an extra $500 to jump the cue and build him a 1911. Didn't help him one bit and the work was not good.

We told him he would have been better off putting that money into ammo for practice as he was not a reloader.

I spent some time handling my Sport 1 with the AR223 3x9x40mm and I think that it will just require some dedicated useage for me to be comfortable with it.

I still prefer the Sport II with the red dot as it is so light, handy and quick to handle. Makes my Tavor feel like a club by comparison, but then I haven't spent much range time with it either.

Question

When I bought my AR-556, I had originally planned on buying a Bushnell TRS-25 RD. Then, I started doing some research on it. People were stating that the model with the gold lettering (Trophy model) was the one to buy. They stated that the white lettered model was junk. I looked for the gold lettered model for awhile but they were rather expensive. I then decided on another brand.
Is it true what people say about the white lettered model being junk?

There is no substitute for practice when it comes to shooting. You can have the best firearm on the planet but if you don't have a smooth trigger pull you won't be on target. You have to shoot enough to know when you mess and when the gun is messed up. If you can't tell the difference you'll never shoot well. Some people pick it up quick. No one picks it up without doing it at least a while.

I have the white lettered one, and it is perfectly ok. I use it on a ruger 10/22 charger now, but it was on my Sport II for a while. Now my M&P wears a Primary Arms Advanced micro dot, with 50,000 hour battery life. And resides behind the bedroom door as a HD rifle with the PA red dot always on.

I think the only problem with the white labeled one was the led emitter was kinda blocking the bottom field of view. This is solved by setting up the sight with absolute co-witness, rather than lower 1/3. I haven't heard of any actual problems with the white version other than that.
