Default How low will the Sport II go.

Back in Feb I thought that the Sport II would go down to under $500. IIRC I thought $479 Shipped was realistic. Well we have seen $399 at PSA for a small quantity and right now you can get one with the GI style handguards for $449 and with Magpul MOE for $469 shipped.

How low can they go?

As low as S&W is willing to let them go.

The rifle is inexpensive enough to produce that there's still probably room below the current prices.

And if S&W were to decide they were more interested in market share than profit, they could just price their way down the demand curve to cost and drive a many of the smaller makers out of business leaving them to clean up when the next panic strikes.

What's probably working to keep S&W from lowering prices too much is they may be afraid that a $299 M&P-15 Sport II would make the S&W brand look "cheap" and get in the way of selling expensive handguns.

So lots of people selling at $399 or less?

I think they will cut production so that prices will go back up. They likely built a lot of them based on the idea there would be a rush to buy between November and January. But that didn't happen so they had a surplus. Once those are sold likely the price will go up again. They are interested in making money and if they establish the idea you can get an AR for $400 they will have a tough time selling them at $650 once the next panic hits. I'd suggest buying while you can if that's something you're looking to do. I don't think they price will go any lower.

It is the distributors that stocked up in preparation for the expected rush. One basic premise of business is inventory sitting unsold is capital that can't be invested somewhere else. It's time to dump that excess inventory.

Every time there is a panic situation in this country plenty of AR's with MSRP's of $739 are sold for well over $1000, in spite of the fact that they may have been priced well below MSRP prior to the panic.

There isnt any demand. Everyone and their grandma bought one either for too much in 2013 or for regular price in 2014 when they thought the world was ending for some reason. Market is flooded. Walmart doesn't even sell them anymore. Reason? They don't sell. Back to shotguns and deer rifles. Everyone thinks Walmart was snobby and pulled AR's for some Black Rifle scare thing. Nope, they sold a ton of them when they were scarce. Now that the market is flooded, they can't sell them so they take them out of inventory. They know marketing.

Thumbs up

Grabagun.com is now selling them for $489. They had been selling them in the mid $500 range for the longest time.

Great prices on just about everything AR right now. I think it will take awhile to sell off the surplus but if you want a certain model now is a good time to buy while the selection is good. You can put together a parts gun so cheap that I am tempted to put a couple together because the price will go up again. The anti's haven't gone away they are just regrouping.

FFL cost is $399 for some makes. I can't see them going much lower for complete, metal lower rifles. Joe

Deton and Anderson have gone below the $399 level. Personally I would pay the addition $50 for the Sport II or are you saying that the cost on some of the Sport II variants is $399 to dealers.

This is true. There are some killer deals on higher end rifles as well. I have seen DD rifles $300 off with free $200 gift cards from people like Brownells. BCM Recce's have been $200-$300 less than they used to be. Even seen some good prices on Noveske.

Well, every "conservative" talking head spent the past eight years telling them the world was going to end and they told that lie big enough and often enough that for many people it became "the truth".

For the immediate future that seems to be the case.

I don't have a microphone planted in the S&W Boardroom so I don't know if they're going to try to expand their reach into the Modern Sport Rifle market or if they're just going to allow the market to reach equilibrium and then try to let their margins recover.

What none of us know is what business arrangements the various manufacturers had with their supply chain. If S&W had anticipated a Hillary victory they may have locked in 2017 contracts for delivery of a lot of parts they now either have to sell for little more than scrap value or build into rifles that they put into a saturated market. The decision whether to build and sell at a discount or curtail production and try to get prices back up will be made by S&W based on which way they think adds the most value to the company in the long run.

I think it was pretty much true that gun rights were under assault. If certain things went the wrong way we would all be paying high prices for what we want. I don't want to get into the politics of it but Obama did try to put a big hurt on AR's.

Agreed. Just because the previous administration wasn't successful in it's anti-2nd plans, or that Hillary miraculously didn't win, doesn't mean that the gloom-and-doom predictions were "lies". All the groups and individuals, all the way up to the global powers-that-be, are STILL actively conspiring to end gun rights.
That storm on the horizon is still there, and it's still growing and getting closer, and the fact that it hasn't arrived according to anyone's predicted timeline doesn't negate it.

Between now and the year before the next election will probably be about the best time to buy a gun that we've seen since the Reagan administration.
