Default Sport II impressions. 300rds. later...

Yeah, I know, 300 rds. aint much. But! when I go to shoot, I have to drive 15 miles to the "Family Farm".
Each time, I have to take as many of my "pets" that I want to shoot.
Which ALWAYS includes my CETME 7.62...a AK47...usually my AK63DS...and one, or two, of my bolt rifles...98K, Mosin, K31...etc.
Being "new" to the AR platform...I have compared it with my others.
PROS.
No.1 S&W have provided a budget priced, accurate, reliable
weapon.
No.2 Light, almost "Toy" like. Compared to my CETME.
No.3 Cheap, available ammo.
No.4 "Urban Warfare" is the "nitche" this gun is designed for.
Zombies anyone? I would grab it in a SHTF situation.
No.5 Lifetime Warranty.

CONS.
No.1 Even extended, the stock seems "short" on the length of
pull, that I am used to. My AK's were the same...but I
"fixed" that with a Tapco folder on one, and a 2 inch pad
on the other..The CETME is just right.
No.2 Not really an issue, range shooting, BUT! the hand guard
would heat up in constant use. After 3 30rd. mags, full
on, this thing was HOT.

Conclusion: For my intended use...I will change the hand guard
for a heat shielded, maybe vertical gripped version.
Other than that...It will "Do"....

I've built all 3 of my AR's so I can get exactly what I want on a rifle but in spite of this I find the Sport II a VERY tempting package. Plain truth is you get an excellent rifle at a real bargain. So, congrats on your new rifle.

BTW, the rifle range I shoot at is partially funded by the Michigan DNR so when shooting a centerfire rife you can only chamber one round at a time. As a result I don't ever have to be concerned about a hot handguard, heck the barrel barely gets warm.

Concerning the purchase of a vertical grip for the handguard I would recommend you you not waste your money on one of these. While they do look "tactical" about the only time they are comfortable for shooting a rifle is when you are shooting from the hip. Ask yourself how often you'll be doing that. IMO a good heat shield will be a much better path to take.

I have to disagree about the vertical grip. Mine is not on the handguard, but on a rail a little foward of it. Mine folds up and I find it handy to use for resting the rifle on a fence post or other impromptu shooting position instead of trying to use a bipod.
Bipods are great on a bench or shooting prone, but I don't do much shooting from either of those positions.

I find a vertical grip gives me much better control over the front of my AR. I don't like having to grip a rail. I find it awkward and uncomfortable. And IMO it's harder to hold the front of the rifle steady which of course is a big issue with accuracy. I wouldn't want a vertical grip on a regular Monte Carlo rifle stock but on an AR I think it's almost essential.

If you do a lot of rapid fire shooting, the barrel can get quite warm indeed. Replacement hand guards with a metal heat shield liner are readily available. I picked up a "used" pair at a gun store that was going out of business for $12. The gun shop owner had taken them off new guns because the customers wanted a "sexier" looking handguard.
