Default Little bit of play

SW-nation,

I've recent been shooting my M&P Sport I a lot more this summer and I've recently noticed a little play in the rear stock. It's not like it's jiggling loose or anything but just noticed a little movement when handling/packing it away. Should I be concerned?

It shoots great...accurate, not one hiccup using a bunch of different ammo and mags.

Thoughts?
Thanks!

Play is perfectly normal in a retractable stock. Does not affect accuracy or function of the gun.

I own a Sport I with the 5R barrel. Since day 1 the stock has had a slight bit of "play" in it. Everyone that I have seen with this same problem has recommended putting tape on the buffer tube. I don't think mine is bad enough to add tape to the buffer tube, but in your case, it might be. Try the tape trick. It might work.

If it really bothers you, Magpul has a few replacement stocks with a friction lock. That would do the trick. I have a few ARs with the Magpul furniture, they are a little more comfortable, and there is much less play. Also if you want you can get all the replacement parts in a different color for a new look.

Thanks all...great information and tips. Quick question - I'm in MA so, when I bought it it came with a pinned stock (can't retract). Can I still swap it out if I ever wanted to? Again, it's so minor that I really don't notice it, but it would be nice to have the option.

Thanks again!

If the pinned stock is a requirement of a Mass. assault weapon ban, or like in NY a permanent State law, I think if you change the stock and buffer tube to a collapsible one,,you may be in violation of some state law. I would check with a more knowledgable person familiar with the laws in your state. Other than that it would be a quick replacement of buffer tube and stock.

Seriously? What does a collapsible stock have to do with anything in MA. or NY? You can do just as much, or more damage with a pinned stock than with a collapsible stock.
Who makes up these laws? They should attend a shooting/weapons coarse, or at least have had served in the military before making said laws. SMH!

I guess a collapsible stock makes the rifle shorter and more easily concealed...........I guess? Still, it's silly.

Because, in those states, when you add a retractable stock, the modern sporting rifle turns into a weapon of mass destruction!
