M&P 15X
Thoughts? Opinions? Reviews?
See link below.
M&P(R)15X | Smith & Wesson
Edit: I just purchased this rifle for 999.00 and am seeking opinions and a general discussion for the platform.
It came with a TruGlo 30mm Red Dot.

Looks like they priced it high for the present AR market.

Did you find one for sale in that version? That's the old style, here is a thread on the newer X model.
Is This A New M&P15 AR?

Got it for 999. What's the difference in these two models aside from the handguard?

Also, I'm just not a big fan of magpul mbus' and m-lok handguards......
I saw the "new" model and compared it to the "old" model before purchasing...i didnt like the forged trigger guard on the lower receiver either...

Mike, wasn't knocking it just that there are a lot of deals out there now. I would put my money into triggers and a high dollar aiming system.

Are you able to reccommend any triggers?
Also, when i purchased the rifle it came with a 30mm truglo "red dot" [see attached].
Is this optics brand decent or no?

Triggers are not bad in the S&W's, if you want to upgrade it just depends on what type shooting your planning on doing and what your budget is.
I like to change stuff out so all my rifle have aftermarket triggers, for me the sport is on the economy side so I re-used one of my BCM take-off triggers in my sport.
I've been shooting AR's in the military for a long time and know what I like and don't like. If your new to AR's you would be better off getting use to your new rifle and see if you think you even need to change your's out.
Never heard of that optic, are your plans for the rifle just for the range and home defense or training classes and work? Maybe hunting?
Looks like a fine rifle as-is, put a couple hundred rounds through and come back with some feed back on what you like and don't like. It's had knowing what you might want if you haven't fired the weapon yet.

Thanks for your detailed response! And that you for your military service!
I will most definitely be following up as i start running the rifle. Will post pictures also.
I only plan on using this rifle [and optic] on the range for target practice.

As mentioned above, the triggers on MOST M&P15s are actually pretty good for a stock trigger. While they have the duty weight to them, they're pretty clean and crisp. I'd like to say they're comparable to the ALG QMS or even the ACT triggers minus the silver coating, depending on the rifle (being that EVERY rifle is different, not just talking about the model).

Just to add info - that Truglo RD ranges about $40 to $50 online. Never looked through one so no idea what you're getting. In the world of red dots, it would fall into the lower price arena. Could be perfect for you and only you can make that call. Good luck!

It will be suitable for getting used to shooting with a red dot optic while you save up for an Aimpoint Pro, or compM4...

Right now I have a Raptor ambi, BCM ambi, Geissele ambi and a BCM mod 4 charging handle.
My favorite is the raptor.

First order of business: cut the included ladder rail guards to the correct size.

You might want to raise up the red dot so it is either absolute or lower 1/3 co-witness. It is mounted too low to be either the way it is.

I have the model m&p15x that I bought new back in 2009. Its has been & still is a great rifle. I would go ahead & replace the buffer spring, its cheap & should be done every 3-5k rounds. With the carbine length gas system you can put a heavier buffer in also. I just switched my H buffer out for an H2 & it runs smoother & I haven't had any problems yet. I recently upgraded to a Geissele SD-E trigger & this 1 upgrade was the most noticeable improvement. From now on a trigger upgrade will be in my top 5 list of parts to replace. You should take a look at some of Bushnells red dot offerings, they are worth the money & depending on the model you could drop some weight off the top of your rifle. I run the BCM medium size latch on mine, not too big & not too small & plenty strong

Funny that you mention that.....
And to think I had a 1-inch riser in my hands today but decided against purchasing it [obviously, before shooting the rifle...] because I wasn't sure if I would need it or not.
I realized I should have gone with my gut shortly after...when I ran the rifle for the first time. The front post completely blocks the red dot!! Immediate regret LOL!
It goes without mention that I'll be returning tomorrow to purchase it!
