Any AR mag will work... some work better than others though.

I'm really starting to dig Hexmags. Believe me, I have a bunch of Magpuls....a whole bunch, but something about the Hexmag I'm liking. Reliable as all get out and they look cool. Yup, I went the tacticool route.

Though I don't personally think it'll happen again (to the same extreme), a few years ago we saw insane shortages, and absurd price hikes on AR magazines. So, don't delay in picking up a decent stash of mags, while they're plentiful and cheap.
As cyphertext stated above, most any AR mag will work fine, though some are better than others. I've had flawless service from the standard mil-spec 30-rd aluminum mags, going back decades, and there are always some very good deals out there.
I've also been happy with the P-mags, and they can often be found almost as cheaply as aluminum mags.
Also, some of those 20-rd mags are pretty cool to have around, and make the rifle much more nimble when bench shooting.
AR15.com has a magazine sub-forum, and has lots of of good info, as well as a stickied thread dedicated to the latest mag deals. Give it a look......

How many mags do you guys think is necessary? Currently have 5. New to AR's and this may be a dumb question, but i can't believe how cheap these things are compared to what they were just 4 years ago.

Depends... are you getting magazines for a trip to the range, or wanting a full load out for the zombie apocalypse?
As you pointed out, they are cheap right now... so buy them now! We could be only one mass shooting away from having them restricted again, so buy as many as you feel you may need.

As many as it will take when the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE happens!
I currently have 14, in which 6 of them are steel.

My two favorites are Magpul and Lancer L5 AWM. I lean toward the Lancer because they can be had is translucent smoke.

I don't like reloading mags at the range and try to bring enough to get me through the day when I go.
My rifle bags fit 24 mags so that's what I keep, unless a good sale comes up and then I'll grab a few more.
I stay with PMAGs but have issues with some ammo in my 300 blk so I have 6 Lancer smoked mags for that gun.
I normally bring 4 AR's to range when I go so 5 mags wouldn't last very long for me.
