Just so you know, at indoor ranges the green tip ammo is for the most part prohibited from being used. It shouldn't be an issue at outdoor ranges, so check before you take it.

I'm just catching up on this thread since my initial reply. I'm not here as much as I used to be, but there are members here who remember my hey-day with a M&P 15-Sport Gen1.

I didn't listen. I changed everything out. Went through two BCG's because I had to have this or that. I went through two charging handles. I went through four muzzle devices. I swapped drop in furniture a few times. I deleted the A2 front sight and free floated. Trigger. KNS pins. Nickel Boron this and that. I even bought every weight buffer I could... AND a hydraulic buffer. I even went on a cleaning tool, solvent, oil craze. I went down the maintenance/build tool rabbit hole. Crazy right? All it did was lighten my wallet. Add up the total cost of everything I bought to "upgrade" a 15-Sport Gen1 and I'm probably into FN SCAR 16 territory.

It's from this experience, I always advise a new AR-15 owner to just go out and shoot it. Get a feel for it. Pay attention to how it feels, and where you feel the fit is less than ideal. You can then spend your money on worthwhile upgrades that will be of practical benefit to you.

What you need out of the box remains the same as my previous post. You need a method to aim. If your rifle is equipped from the factory with iron sights, use them. If you purchased an optics ready model, buy some backup iron sights or an optic. You'll need to clean and lube your rifle: Boresnake + clp + rag. You'll need a case to transport your rifle to and from the range. Because a rifle requires two hands to operate and you may find that you need to free up your hands yet keep your rifle on you, you'll need a sling. I highly recommend a basic two point sling, nothing fancy. You'll need ammo to shoot. You'll need a couple extra mags.

On the other hand, purchasing an AR isn't a money-savings pursuit for a lot of folks. The idea that someone must assume the missionary AR position for a period of time before changing anything doesn't necessary apply. Many will enjoy outfitting their rifle more than shooting it. Many will enjoy more hours reading and talking about AR accessories and optics on Net discussion forums than hours with their AR at the range. Anyone here like that?

Yes, get some trigger time with your rifle. However, sending quarters down range with a rifle in a configuration you'd like to change isn't all that fun nor particularly economical. If ya acquire a new goodie that doesn't quite live up to your expectations (seasoned AR guys regularly do that too) the AR parts box has a way of eventually morphing into another rifle. It's all good.

Why is it a rabbit hole? With self control you can easily stop building rifles, I plan to stop after the current rifle I'm building is finished! See, easy.....

Notice you said "plan" to stop.... Like I keep "planning" to get back in shape!

The wallet draining rabbit hole of building is two fold. One, you build several rifles. Two, the rifles you build will have better stuff than the basic "milspec" carbine.

Heck I just finished an AR for the wife... including a Trijicon red dot, Timney trigger and Lantac brake. Those were must-haves for the wife... uh hu...

Maybe the next build will be for my great great great great grandson. Better get started soon.

Not this guy, after I finish this build I'll finally be satisfied and be able to stop with no issues.

Then again I do have one extra BCG that I had to get because it was on sale, so maybe one more after the current build.

But after that, I'm done. It's easy to stop buying gun parts and building new rifles!
