I have a surefire G2 and an impact weapons mount that is very low profile. Works great!

The mount can be found here.

I have one similar to this on my coyote killer, but I paid about a third of this price on e-bay:

Leapers UTG, New Gen Light Grip, QD Mounting Base, 400 Lumen, Black - MNT-EL228GPQ-A - 4717385551350

And I have one like this with quick detach mount that I can put on top or under the handguard of my Sport II. It does block the stock sights if I put it on top, so then I have to use the laser.

US Red/Green Laser Sight + CREE Q5 LED Flashlight Combo for 20mm Picatinny Rail | eBay

Both are very bright, I can spot a coon or skunk at 100yds in the pitch dark with no problem.

I also have a Surefire G2 mounted on a loaded shotgun in the closet. The Surefires are nearly bulletproof (as is their warranty), and are pretty cheap these days. I believe it's attached with some basic polymer clamp, that works every bit as well as something more expensive. I wouldn't over-think (or over-pay) on a light clamp.

Exactly what do you expect your light to do?

I've gone through a few different lights/mounts when someone else was paying the bill, and a couple on my own dime. What I've found to work for me is a Surefire G2, extra o-ring under the cap so the switch is only momentary and a GG&G ring mount for that type of light. It's slightly larger in diameter than the standard 1 " light body of metal.

Total package went under $100 at the time I bought it. Think the light is around 600 lumens.

Mount is attached at 10:00 position on a $7 rail section 2 inches long. Operated by the support hand thumb. If I have to go other handed, the support hand is palm forward/reversed so the thumb can operate the light.

I am using the Streamlight Poly Tac 275 lumen light (about $40 on Amazon) on all my rifles. I combine this lightweight light with the Arson Machine mounts. I have them in KeyMod, Mlok and Picatinny and I haven't found any mount that is more secure while holding the light extremely close to the rail.

Depending on how you intend to use it, attaching a flashlight to an AR could be the worst thing you could do. Once you turn it on it may or many not illuminate the target, it can destroy your acquired night vision and as the only bright thing in the vicinity it can illuminate you as a target.

Get a sense for what it is going to be like by taking a cheap dollar store flashlight and tape it to your handguard with some electrical tape and practice with it; both leaving it on constantly and flashing it by manipulating the switch.

My bet is that if you do that, you'll decide you're better off without a light.

The illuminate you as a target thing is rather overblown outdoors. Except if you're using cover and not getting the light past the cover. Inside, virtually any light is going to reflect off walls and clearly show you as a target if there's someone to the side or behind you.

One thing the weapon mounted light will do is make you change your position after a round or two. The powder residue in the air pretty much blocks your vision. I think, but don't know, that the vision block is due to reflected light. Your training should have beaten turning the light off and moving after a round or two into you, but the light certainly forces the issue.

Default mounting position

Something else I wonder about: I see a lot of folks mounting lights on side rails or 45% mounts. I haven't tried that yet so I don't know if the same would be true, but I find that with either the top mounted or under mounted light, at close range or home defense situation, I wouldn't need any other sights. Using a bore sight for reference, the center of my light beam is pretty much my aim point. Maybe my lights just have an unusually narrow beam, but has anyone else experimented with this?

This is the light that I have on my Sport 2:

This is the mount that I use, as the diameter of the flashlight is a little bigger than 1":

Both have held up very well through numerous magazines (probably not as many as most here would like) with no cut-offs and have not come loose. My AR will most likely sit in the safe until either the SHTF or I just feel like shooting it at the range, so the need for a $100 plus light just was not an issue. However, after using and abusing this light for a few years now (not always on a gun), I would have no qualms about using it in a defense situation.

It is definitely worth a look...

****NOTE: Apparently you have to click the lower Amazon link to view it...
