Default Discreet Soft Case

I thought it would be good to start a thread on discreet or covert soft cases.

I wanted a discrete soft case for a rifle that didn't scream tactical or gun. Something that wouldn't draw any attention when transporting a firearm. There are a few options for discrete soft cases and in my quest for such I found four great options. I purchased three of these and I like them all. Each has its pros and cons. They range in price from expensive to cheap. They all work well and are inconspicuous.

LaRue Tactical MKII
Tactical Tailor Covert Carry Case
VISM NcStar Discreet Carbine Case
AR15COM Covert Take Down Soft case

In the following posts I will provide more detail on each of these cases. If you have one of these I've listed please offer your thoughts on it. If you have a different discrete or covert case please share.

Default LaRue MKII Covert Case

First up is the LaRue Tactical MKII $194 from LaRue's website. This will fit a 16 inch carbine broken down, even with an optic attached. There is also room for a pistol, spare magazines and other accessories. It's available in eight colors. I bought this bag two years ago and let me just say I absolutly love it. It is by far my favorite. It does come at a high price for it's MADE IN THE U.S.A. awesomeness.

YKK zippers, double stitching at stress points. Made with abrasion-resistant Cordura nylon and dense rigid foam. There is hook and loop everywhere and as a result you will be able to customize to your exact needs. They include the three tie down straps, three divider panels (one large and two small) and one magazine pouch which holds two magazines. The inside top cover has 1”x7” Velcro loop panel to add magazine pouches or other accessories. More accessories are available or you may use ones you already own. There is also a 9”x7” pocket that will hold magazines or paperwork. This pocket has five rows of molle web for additional accessories. The Cordura nylon repells water providing protection from the elements.

Overall very rugged and nice case with the only cons being the price and its size. It is a bit on the small side.

Default Tactical Tailor Covert Carry Case

Next up is from Tactical Tailor coming in at $124 from Amazon and other websites. This case is also made in the U.S.A. and is available five colors and two sizes. I've had the 36 inch version for about three years and it is very nice. This is not a take down case and will fit a 16 inch carbine with collapsible stock fully assembled including optics, spare magazines, a pistol and some paperwork. It comes with four point adjustable attachment system to secure your rifle. It has YKK zippers and is made from 1000 denier Cordura nylon inside and out and 3/8 inch closed cell foam padding for protection. The large outside pocket officially holds four magazines, but I fit in six in there. There is also an internal mesh pocket for paperwork.

Cons on this bag would be price and rigidity. Not quite as expensive as the LaRue, but still on the high end. It also isn't quite as rigid as the LaRue. Specifically on the edges. Although it isn't really a problem, just worth noting. It also comes in a double rifle case. I don't have that to compare, but it has similar features.

Default VISM Discreet Carbine Case

The VISM NcStar Discreet Carbine Case has a price point between $35 and $56 from various websites like Optics Planet or Amazon. It is available in four colors and will fit a 16 inch carbine broken down, even with an optic attached.

The bottom of the case is lined with PAL webbing allowing you to customize the attachment points of the two divider panels. Two zippered mesh pockets that are large enough to hold spare magazines. The padding is minimal, but should be sufficient for transporting to the range as long as you don't abuse it. I've only had this case a few months, but used it several times and I do like it and it works great for a lightweight carbine like the M&P 15-22. I have a buddy that uses his for the M&P 15 Sport II and he loves it and thinks I am nuts for buying the LaRue. He might be right.

This case is similar to the LaRue MKII but several differences. The VISM beats the LaRue in size and cost. The case is slightly larger which makes fitting your gear in a little easier. The cost is also very cheap.

The LaRue beats the VISM in quality of materials, workmanship, padding, durability and features and versatility. The Velcro attachment points instead PAL web straps for the divider is much more stable and rigid. Only you can decide if the high of cost of the LaRue is worth it.

Default ARFCOM Covert Take Down Soft Case

Lastly but not the least is the AR15COM Covert Take Down Soft Case. $60 from ARFCOM.
I do not have any experience with this bag, but have been tempted to get one. It looks like good option and is available in any color you like as long as its Black. Since I haven't seen it in person nor have any experience with it I have copied and pasted the information provided from their website:

“We designed our case around a 16" barreled upper receiver (including optics and BUIS), then made sure we had room for the lower receiver assembly, several 30rd magazines, a sling, cleaning kit, and even a light; all the basics you'd want to have with you if you were headed to the range, training, or in case of emergency.

These heavy-duty padded cases are a mere 26x12x4" so they fit easily in your vehicle, stack easily, and offer generous protection from the elements and physical abuse. At the same time they are easily configurable for your needs, and have room for your primary weapon along with a variety of accessories you may choose to carry with it.

Case comes with 8 velcro straps for attaching your gear to the 3 rows of internal MOLLE loops, as well as 4 D-rings on the back to attach a shoulder strap. One side features a velcro area for attaching your own patches”

The problem with most of these tacticool discrete take down cases is that by the time you get them loaded they are so heavy you need wheels and hydraulics to move them and get them in and out of your car.

If I'm going to the range I don't care if someone recognizes my gun case for what is is. Here in God's country, everyone owns guns anyway and it is assumed that you do also. If I ever have to bug out, the rifle will be loaded and in my hands.

Thanks for posting. I normally use hard cases but during hunting season this year I had to use a soft case because of size restrictions and the only one I had screamed tactical(got it free) and one of the type you posted may be in my future.

All of the bags I listed above are small. They hold your rifle and a few accessories. I don't know what you could fit in there that would make it so heavy as to necessitate wheels or hydraulics. These are small, compact and would require a separate range bag if you want to carry more gear.

Many who live in more urban areas prefer not to draw attention to their firearm when transporting it to the range. All of the above listed bags don't scream tactical and are rather plain looking on the outside.

Ibanez use to make a nice soft case for bass guitars that doubles great as a rifle case.. Enough padding to ensure the rifle doesn't move around as well as protects it, plus there is room for plenty of mags

An Epiphone Padded Guitar case usually works great, as NOBODY wants
to steal an Epiphone Guitar...so they leave 'em alone if seen in a car
One can set up the interior with velcro straps for a perfect fit.

Very few people pay serious attention to Cheap Guitar Gear

Michigan, if you don't care for wheels and hydraulics, there's a suitcase out now that follows you around via a Wi-fi connection and a battery pack. Ought to save you some effort.

Luger, I like these reviews. Best thing about some of these, to me, is the flexibility in configuring the layout. I don't care for the setups where the scoped part of the firearm is at the bottom of the case.
Do any of these have EXTRA padding or reinforcement along the bottom edge, opposite the handle? Are they able to stand on edge, or are they meant to all lay flat when filled? It seems to me they are meant to be laid down,,,,,,,,

I agree about not having the scope rest on the bottom, but I don't mind having the upper receiver rest there as long as I have the scope facing up toward the handles. Here are my thoughts....

The tactical Tailor case, I always put my rifle in with the scope toward the handles. It can go in either way. This case does have a bit more padding on the bottom edge, but is only three inches wide so it does not stand well on the edge. I lay it flat or up against something.

The VISM NcStar is four inches wide and will stand on its end edge however there is the same amount of padding on the all four edges. Although the padding is adequate, I would not configure it to have my scope resting on the side. As you said, there is flexibility, and you can configure to your needs or wants.

The LaRue MKII is five inches wide at the base and stands well on its edge. The padding is almost double the VISM's at about 3/4 of an inch and is more than sufficient. I still wouldn't put my scope resting on the bottom though. Out of all these bags, it is the most customizable and rugged. Thumbs up all the way on this bag. There is a reason it is expensive as it is top notch and very well made. If you have expensive scope or rifle, it is well worth the cost.

I have no experience with the ARFCOM bag, but I hope someone does and can post about it.

Talking

I have a soft case that I use for my AR-15's and it has worked well but I wouldn't call it discreet.
They come in 3 colors black, green and tan and they have exterior pockets for magazines and small tools. I don't remember the brand but I was impressed enough to end up buying three of them and I got one in each color.

I wouldn't call any case pictured in this thread "discreet . . . " Buy what works for you. I'm not a big fan of taking down a rifle to put it in a case.

This might be my first I'd consider doing that with, except for the Henry AR-7. That's just too cool NOT to take down,,,,,,,,

I just bought a Peak case for my shotgun and I’m very impressed. Nicely made and doesn’t scream tactical or gun. They make them for quite a few guns. I kinda like the pistol ones they make out of RIGID tool carriers.

The only discreet case has no pockets, no Velcro, no Molle, none of that, and preferably is not black. If it is black it should have some kind of decoration on it.

But where I live, nobody cares, anyway.
