Default O ring on threaded M&P15 sport 2 barrel?
When installing an aftermarket muzzle device on factory threaded barrel, do I keep or remove the rubber O ring?

Personally, I'd use a crush washer, and/or, peel washer so that the muzzle device can be clocked properly.

Just make sure you are using a new crush washer to ensure you get a good lock when timing the muzzle brake.

Are rubber o-rings common? I've never seen one before on an AR muzzle device. Wouldn't it melt?

Never seen one on any kind of AR and yes they would melt. But honestly I think the OP was referring to the crush washer and just didn't know the right term.

Yes..i was referring to 2 separate things. My aftermarket muzzle brake has a crush washer. M&P15 Sport 2 Optic ready comes from the factory with a thread protector with preinstalled Oring on the threaded barrel. I had fired 200rounds in factory config (no muzzle brake installed, factory O ring and thread protector in place)... O ring is still intact and hadn't melted.

Are you in California by any chance? Most of these rifles do not come from the factory with a thread protector, but the CA compliant ones do. Most come with an A2 style flash hider from the factory.

Interesting that the compliant OR version has a threaded barrel while the standard Sport II doesn't. And the OR lists for $20 less.Haven't seen the OR, but really haven't been looking.

The o-ring is to keep the thread protector from vibrating off during firing.
Factory flash hiders use a crush washer.
Ditch the o-ring and go with a crush washer if installing a flash hider or muzzle brake.

Another idea is a soft aluminum or copper oil drain plug washer. You can get those most any auto parts store, or decent hardware store.

Standard threading on that barrel is 1/2x28, so a 1/2" drain plug washer should be perfect.

For the record, I have a Ruger 10/22 bull barrel that is factory threaded, and the thread protector is counter-bored for an O-ring. The seam is almost imperceptible when the protector is on. Doubt you could get the muzzle end hot enough on a .22LR Bull barrel to ruin the O-ring, unless it is a full auto 10/22 or something similar.
