Default The impossible shot?

We've all heard/read internet claims of ridiculously small shot groups or shots. I've spent plenty of time questioning such claims. Well, it's my turn to post something that I wouldn't have believed if I didn't see it myself.

Tuesday, at an advanced rifle tactics class, I watched my friend make an amazing shot. He used a run of the mill AR to hit an 18" wide x 24" tall silhouette at 800 yards (I checked it with a laser range finder).

Ok, that's not incredible, but there's more. This shot was taken with a 30MPH wind about 80 degrees from the right. Yes, we measured it with a Kestral wind meter.

But wait, there's more. He did this with an Aimpoint Comp M2 red dot sight. That's right, no magnification. I couldn't even see the silhouette without magnification.

Here's a pic from the prone position:

Here's the range zoomed in a little and some of the targets marked:

He didn't hit it with the first shot, but he did with the second and third.

Oh yes, I shot it as well. I didn't try the 800 yard target, but I did hit the 1,200 yard. Of course that one was 5' wide x 3' tall and took me 4 tries to hit it. And, I was using a 3x scope on a Tavor X95.

Too often people second guess claims on boards. I've known world class shooters that left all boards because people doubted their claims. And they set all sorts of records that can't be broken (first to do certain things and then first to do them multiple times). It's hard to know who you're really talking to on a board. If a famous person claims to be themselves they get called a liar for saying it.

Well then, now do you believe I shot .407" with a Sport at 100 yds?
Rastoff, my friend, please say yes so I do not become despondent.
Jim

ps... great shooting by you and your friend.

More often than not, honest people get called liars too.
Your point is well taken though.

Default Need a bigger target—bigger eyeglasses too!

I might could hit the mountain range in the background if it was moved within 200 yards.

How about telling more about the class you were taking, sounds interesting. Not many places that you can shoot those distances around my neck of the woods.

Bet that was fun. Now that's my kind of range. Hop in the jeep to check the target.

Unless he hit it twice in a row, he had a lot of luck flowing in his direction.;-) After all, point a rifle downrange and shoot and you're going to hit SOMETHING...

Guys with fewer guns seem to be better shots. I have watched guys shoot one of my guns and be marginal shooters but when they pick up “ol reliable” they have owned and shot for years, they are exceptional.

I have trouble remembering how a lot of different guns shoot but if I limit myself to a few guns and practice a lot with them I do better.

I can see the logic in that. I've deer hunted for over 30yrs with my Winchester model 94, top mounted scope on high rise see thru mounts. If you've never used high rise mounts, they don't lend to good cheek weld. I've let many people shoot my gun and very few can hit anything with it. I can also tell if I don't shoot it regularly, takes me a few shots to get back "in the groove".

Good Morning Rastoff,

Were you shooting in Kern County off of US 395?

Places for me to shoot keep getting farther & farther away. I'm south of LA County, and the closest outdoor range is Devore, which is about 75 miles. I'm not sure if there are anymore places in the High Desert where we can shoot. While I was growing, there were gun stores everywhere, and we didn't have to drive far to shoot.

If Gavin the Grave succeeds Moonbeam, he will do everything he can to confiscate every single gun from every Californian.

For you guys living in free states: remain vigilant for incremental gun control. Never, ever compromise. Compromise, as we're living it now in CA, means they'll win and you'll lose. I will guarantee it.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread, but looking at a photo of a dude shooting a centerfire rifle in So Cal with soon be an exhibit in the Smithsonian.

I would love to try shooting at those distances one of these days. Here in my neck of the woods, the longest gun ranges are only 300yds. Where I deer hunt, 300yds is about the max . I do have access to a few private fields that offer maybe seven hundred yds. I don't know where I could go to even attempt a 1200yd shot.

We dial and shoot in 30 mph crosswinds quite often at Camp Perry in the Service Rifle national matches, albeit our "long range" for Service Rifle is 600 yards. If you don't hit pretty danged close to the 12" ten-ring, or at least the 18" 9-ring on the first shot or two, you ain't going home with a medal. We used to all do it with open sights up until two years ago when they began allowing scopes with 4X max. magnification.

The first time I shot at Camp Perry, the wind charts were telling me to put over 5 minutes of wind on to counter the crosswind. I had a lot of trouble coming to terms with dialing that much but I listened to the more experienced shooters and did it anyway. Thank goodness I took their advice as it turned out very well for me.

This Saturday I hit a 12" plate at 100 yards first shot with my 5" 629-4. I don't practice that far, don't shoot handguns that far, heck, I could barely see that far. I keep telling myself I did it, and I don't even believe myself and I was there. I just proved even a broken clock gets it right once in a while.

my grandson shoots out there too, but its 20mm from a f16. as to this shot. I took a grandson out a few years ago with a ak47, a eastern european sniper scope on it, and he had som 12 by 12 boards out to about 400yards. Surprised me he good hit them giving no prior experience with that type of gun.
I have friends that are 41magnum sluts that shoot regularly out to 800 yards and hit targets.
but that is with a lot of practice.
what was done was still pretty good stuff. more so, if he can do it again.

No, this was in Nevada. However, there are plenty of places here in Kern that look just like that.

Since you asked nicely...

This was not a long distance class. The shots taken at this particular range were just a break from the regular portion of the class. This was called Advanced Long Gun Tactics at a school called Front Sight.

This course teaches advanced tactics with rifle and shotgun. To qualify, we had to do well (90% or better on the test) in the 4 day basic rifle and 4 day basic shotgun. Since we learned, and demonstrated, proficiency in the basics of shooting, this course worked heavily on the tactics and very little on shooting. Yes, we shot plenty, but almost all of it was on steel.

Here we worked on different platforms, different situations and to use both shoulders. We did one handed malfunction clearances and reloads. If you've never done that, it's quite tough.

We used a V-Tac wall to work on different levels and to practice using cover from both shoulders.

After the sun set on day one, we worked on low light shooting and using weapon mounted flashlights.

Super fun class, but physically demanding. If you've never shot with your support shoulder, it will be sore. I shot over 325 rounds of 00 Buck and 60 slugs. I put just over 385 223Rem through the rifle.

Impressive.

Even with you pointing it out on the lower picture, I can barely make out the target.

Indeed. Even standing there with a 3x scope was difficult to see the target. Here is a zoomed in image from the full size image. I left the "800" the same relative size for comparison:

The impossible shot?-800-zoomed-jpg

For all those questioning the veracity of this claim; I completely agree. I would question it too. If I hadn't been standing there while the shots were made...
