New M&P 15 Sport II Magpul
Got my first AR 15 this afternoon, the M&P 15 Sport II Magpul edition with the Magpul handguard. It seems like a nice rifle and the shop owner gave me a great price. The shop owner went over the entire rifle with me and showed me how to strip it down and clean it. I also picked up 500 rounds of ammo and a second magazine so I'm ready to go to the range. Now I need the weather to improve but that may be a month or so.
I'm going to use the open sights for now but plan on putting a low power (1-4 or 1-6) scope on it. I will primarily use it for shooting out to 150 yards or so but my eyes could use some magnification.
If anyone has any tips or pointers I would appreciate it. I'm not new to shooting and have been shooting a .308 and .22 for years but have never shot a 5.56/.223.

I like your plan to put a 1-4 or 1-6 power scope on it. Unless you are planning on shooting tiny targets or great range, a low power scope is all you will ever need. A 1x scope is almost as fast as a red dot for quick target acquisition. Just get a cantilever mount so the ocular lens of the scope is about even with the back of the receiver and the scope will be at the correct height. With the modern shooting method, the shooters body is square with the target and the shooters cheek weld is farther forward on the stock.
Shoot the snot out of it before doing any additional modifications. 500 rounds is a good start.

I also picked up my Sport II today also. Been 32 years since I have held onto a AR style rifle. I have been lurking here for over a year reading the forums nightly and picked up a M&P Shield 45 last year. Been looking at this rifle for over 3 months and waiting for the chance. This morning I was at breakfast with friends and talking about the LGS indoor range and looked at Facebook to show the page to a friend and low and behold they just posted a Flash Sale @ $489.95. I was like that Visa commercial and just had to have it. Sorry to HI-Jack your post and congrats on you're first AR15.
Now lets go to the range.

Congrats on your new carbine. It will serve you well.
Clean it before your first range trip. It probably still has packing and shipping lube on all the vital parts. So degrease it and re-lube with any quality product and you will be GTG.

REM 3200, thanks I always clean and lube a new gun before I take is out for the first time. I appreciate the pic with the lube points. I'm being as through as I can familiarizing myself with the rifle before I take it out for the first time. I just need the weather to cooperate now.

[IMG] [/IMG]Here is a pic of the rifle. I still haven't had the chance to fire it yet, but this weekend looks promising. I purchased Vortex Crossfire II for it but I'm not quite sure that I'll mount it yet. I understand that I will need a cantilevered mount for it. The Vortex mount is a little pricey and I'm wondering if I could get away with something cheaper or just spend the money on the Vortex.

On my SportII, I have my scope mounted on an Aero Precision Cantilevered ultra lightweight mount SPR. It works great. It is about $70.
I understand DNZ makes a great scope mount for the AR also.
Good Luck

I was finally able to get out and put a few rounds down range this afternoon. The gun functioned perfectly and there were no problems at all. I can't get over what a nice rifle it is to shoot. When I fired the first several rounds I was hearing a metallic sound, and I thought it might have been the roof on the shelter. Then it hit me that it was the spring.
The only problem that I had was seeing the targets with the iron sights. I had black targets with fluorescent green rings and at 50 I did ok but at 100 I could just barely make out the target. I'm sure I'll do better once I get the scope mounted. I was having a hard time because I've got a bad cold and it was hard to concentrate, but I did have a few nice tight groups.
I'm really pleased with the rifle and can't wait to get back out with the scope mounted and no cold.
