M4 Carry Handle

Hi guys,

I'm still waiting for my MP15 to get back from the shop(canted front sight), I'll keep you posted on the other thread when it's back

In the meanwhile I decided to buy a sling(vickers) and a Carry Handle(7075 OEM)

I noticed the elevation knob still turns even if the 1/16 allen screw if fully tighten. The screw turns and locks without any problem

But as I wrote, when it is complety tight the elevation knob is still free

Is this an issue or am I getting the purpose of the screw wrong?

Can someone try on theirs and provide feedback?

You tube rear sight assembly and it will be clear . I believe the screw you are asking about is used for setting the proper position of the sight and once assembled properly should not need adjusted again. The elevation knob should turn free with detents holding the settings. Properly adjusted the A2 sights are very good irons.

that is why I'm confused....

I have put the elevation knob at the 6/3 marking, so I don't know if the elevation knob should be free to turn if the screw it fully tighten

In my case I have tighten it, but the knob can be turned

As Vonn stated, the sight has detents (clicks) to hold the setting. If it spins without clicking, you have issues.

I have clicks with and without the allen screw fully tightend

What I'm trying to understand is: when the screw is fully tightened, should the elevation know be blocked?

In my case with the allen screw fully tightened, the elevation knob is still able to spin(and I have clicks)

I hope I'm not confusion the function of the allen key

Find a video that shows how to build one from parts to be sure you have the basic setting correct. The knob turns to change the range setting when properly assembled, the screw locks the basic setting only. When you use the military sight in procedure with military ammunition your range setting should be pretty close to on target. Different ammo can require some shooting to see how close it matches your sight picture and may need some “ Kentucky adjustments” of your sight picture for best accuracy.

You are confused. When tightened, the elevation drum will still spin with clicks. Spend some time on-line using Google to find how to battle zero an M4 the Marine Corp way.

You are right and I confirm!

I got it all wrong because when setting it up I didn't loose the allen screw(index screw) enough permitting the index knob of the drum to freely turn

Since the the screw was only slightly loose, index knob and evalation knob turned all toghether

So, the whole mistake(mine) was that the index screw only blocks the the index knob and not the whole drum

Since I loosen only a tiny bit the index screw this confused me

Now I understand how all parts interact with each other! I should have done my homework first

The elevation knob has two parts to it, and that screw holds them together in alignment. With that screw tightened, the whole knob will still turn and lock into place on the different settings. That setup is made so that you can adjust the sights for known distances. For example, you are shooting at 300 yds and then want to shoot at a 600 yard target. Instead of holding high, you would turn the knob from the 3/6 setting clockwise until it came back to the 3/6... The rear sight will now be raised for shooting at the 600 yard target. Then if you go back to 300 yards, you turn the knob counter clockwise all the way until you get back to the 3/6 setting. (Provided you zeroed correctly for this type of sight system)

I messed up because I loosened just a bit the index screw

Once I removed it completely I understood that index knob and elevation knob were completely free to move

I thought the index screw was there to block the whole drum from moving

I feel a little stupid now!

I think it is a fantastic system! Viva iron sights

I decided not to buy a dot but remain Old School
