Default Just picked up a new M&P-15 from my FFL....

...and after getting home and looking it over, it's brand new, with everything well oiled and grease around the base of the front hand guard, and then I noticed lots of horizontal scratches on the top of the barrel, showing silver through the black. . While I know it's not a "high end" rifle, it seems odd to get a new gun with scratches on it already. Anyone gotten a new one with something like that on it already?

I thought about calling S&W just to ask them about it, to see what they say.

Call them. When I buy new, it's new not scratched. Without a picture it is hard to say what is acceptable, but considering your posting your not happy about it. Contact S&W.

I think I will today. the scratches are all on the top with one about half an inch long, all horizontal with the machining line "grain" of the barrel when holding it vertically. My eyes went right to them as I looked the gun over in better light once at home, and I wasn't pleased to see that I'd have to touch up scratches on a new gun. Thanks for the input, I will call them.

Here's one I took last night to send to them today. It's difficult to get a good picture of them with the reflection off the barrel, but you can see the scratches/marks.

One woman I talked to at S&W's customer service said that she agreed that it shouldn't have gone out the door like that. But, she told me to "take it to the range and put some rounds through it" before sending it back, to see if any other issues arise with the gun. I'd rather not, to be honest. I'd be sending back a used gun and with my luck, they'd say "it's been used, we can't fix this, you may have scratched it while at the range."

Yeah, I'm a pessimist.

S&W warranties the M&P15 "to be free from defects in material and workmanship" for one year, per the product manual. I owned one that I shot the snot out for over eleven months before I sent it back in for cosmetics.

How will you feel if there is some other defect that crops up after you receive the rifle back and take it to the range?

I'd run a hundred rounds or so through it. No need to do it all at once if time doesn't permit. Keep it lubed and reasonably cleaning during the firings. If all checks out I personally would call it good. But its your call of course.

Just got a response from my online inquiry, asking for pics so I sent the above and told them I'd try for better ones tonight to send. We'll see what happens.

I agree... shoot if before sending it back. If there are other issues, best to have them addressed with one trip back to the factory... or, maybe it will shoot 1/2 MOA out of the box and you decide that you can just touch up the scratches and be happy!

ETA: Looks like rack wear to me... did the store have it in a display rack?

As far as I can tell, the box was sealed when my FFL friend got it. Late yesterday afternoon, I got an email back from S&W with the form attached for my full name, address, serial number, SKU, etc. so they can send me a shipping label, as they want to see it and check it out. We'll see what happens.

Yes, seeing the picture I believe you have a defective finish on your barrel. Sending it to S&W is the right thing to do.

They will fix it up and get it back to you in better condition. It might take a couple or three weeks, but it's worth it in the long run.

The S&W customer service woman on the phone even said that it shouldn't have gone out the door looking like that. One from a gun store or gun show out on display that has been handled and bumped around on a rack, I could see something like this on but new from a sealed box in a companies stockroom, no. Maybe I'm being anal but I did just drop five hundred for this and would like it to not look used when I haven't even cleaned it up and fired it once myself.

In the meantime, I'll look for good magazine prices and I do want a beefier grip than the standard, and might check out some online to see what's out there.

No sir, not even on a gun that's been handled a lot.

This is the barrel on my X95:

The only marks are from the wrenches I used to tighten the muzzle brake. It's been slammed on barricades, dropped on the ground, handled and shot by many people. Not a mark on it. In fact, I was at the range and another shooter was admiring it so, I showed it to him. I offered to let him shoot it and he said, "No, those things are expensive and I don't want to damage it." I told him if he could damage it, I don't want it. I then demonstrated what I meant by jamming it up against a steel pole as a barricade support. I'm a lefty so, any marks would be on the right side (the side in the picture). You don't see any marks, do you?

Neither should there be any marks on a S&W M&P15. The barrel is finished with a process that is super hard. If you ever see any marks on your barrel, it's more likely that what you see is material/paint from the object the barrel contacted than an actual mark on the barrel. Take some cleaner and a scrubby pad and it will usually clean right off.

She was right, it shouldn't have gone out the door like that.

This MIGHT be a silly thought, but sometimes other stuff rubs on metal and leaves marks, that may look like scratches, but is transfer of the other material. I have had some luck with Mr. Clean eraser sponges. They will NOT scratch decently hard finishes on metals at all.
Red River Reloading and Natchez usually have good prices on mags, I have had some of the 30's sent to a buddy in PA, and TNT Munition has had the best prices on 10 and 15 round ones for those looking for smaller capacity than "high" (according to New Jerksey rules).
All of these can be had for under 10 bucks a mag, and in the case of TNT the shipping is around 7 dollars for any load of stuff sent out.
Found some at a Pennsy gun show a few weeks back, $6.95 a piece!

It looks like to me very symetrical turn marks from a lathe or other machine used in the factory. They go around the barrel, not your standard "oops" scratched in the box marks.

Send it back.

Well, she went back via FedEx today. We'll see what they say after they check it out.

I didn't want to try rubbing too hard on the scrapes, but they do look like bare metal and not marks from color transferred from something else. I wondered with all the shavings of metal on the front part of the hand guard metal plate that maybe some of that got on to a rag the gun was wiped with and they gripped the barrel and did a "twist" motion to wipe the barrel, giving it the horizontal marks. I don't know, we'll see what they say.

Looks like it arrived there safe and soung, and I got a notice saying they had it and were looking it over. Hopefully it won't take too long to fix (hoping they can just pop in a new barrel, that seems the fastest thing to do) but their original info did say it might be about 6 weeks. Meanwhile, I hit Scheels this weekend to look around and picked up a Magpul MIAD black grip with the switchable back straps and the front finger protrusion or flat section. The first thing I notice when I held the M&P-15 was how skinny the grip felt in my hand. Once I get the gun back I can try out the medium and large backstraps to see which feels better.

I got a UTG carry handle online that claims to be "mil spec" that I'll try out on it too. Seems pretty well made, nice and tight and the rear sight doesn't flop or move when it's cranked upward which I saw some cheap sights would do. Looked at some Gen 3 Magpul mags at Scheels but at $16 apiece, I opted to look online again as I'd seen them far cheaper, even with shipping.

Probably from when they installed the FSB. Not uncommon to see ARs with less than perfect fit and finish. I would have thrown some blueing on it and called it good.
Unless they were gouges.

I had the same problem with a brand new Sport I that I ordered online in September 2013. I didn’t notice the scuffed barrel when I picked it up. It looked like scuff marks from a padded vice that could have been used in assembly. I contacted S&W and sent the carbine in without firing it. S&W replaced the upper. And the new upper seemed to fit tighter to the lower. It took about 5 weeks before my carbine was returned. It was a sweet little carbine, but I prefer rifles and sold it to fund a 20” AR rifle.

It's been a couple of weeks now since they got it, and I think they said they were running at about 6 weeks turn time. I'm taking the time to pick up a few items. Ended up finding some gen 3 magazines for $11.99 apiece and a cleaning kit, scraping tool and mat set from Academy to work on, and a stock pad to give it a little more length for my long arms, and need to check out some ammo.

Arm length is not a factor in gun fit. Arms have elbows and can flex to any length. What can't be changed as easily is the relationship between shoulder pocket and cheek.

A good cheek weld is necessary for consistent shooting. To get a good cheek weld, the butt must be placed properly in the shoulder pocket. This is generally higher than most people mount their gun. The heel of the stock should be about 1" higher than your shoulder. That's just a generic starting point, everyone is different. The idea is to get the stock high enough so your head doesn't need to tilt to get a good cheek weld. Look at this picture:

He has the gun fairly high in the shoulder pocket and a good forward lean which helps with recoil control. His elbows are down which helps with movement, even just pivoting left or right. It also helps with recoil control. The skin of his cheek is bunched up a little which tells us he has a good cheek weld. Notice that his head and neck are not scrunched forward or to the right. This makes for a more natural stance and will help prevent lifting the head as the shot is taken.

Notice the stock. It's one click away from the shortest position. This is due to many things, but stance is part of it. He's more square to the target. By being more square, it helps keep the gun from trying to move to the right under recoil.

Now look at this picture:

He's got the stock all the way out. Because of that he has to stand at more of an angle to the target. The weight of the gun is further from his body which makes it more difficult to hold up. His elbows are away from his body which also makes it more difficult to hold up. Also, because the stock is so far out he had to mount the scope further back on the receiver. This is covering the charging handle and makes it more difficult to operate the charging handle.

No, you probably don't need more length. In fact, when it comes to the AR, I have yet to meet a person large enough that the full lengthof the stock, let alone more than that, is necessary.

Rastoff, thanks for the stock info. I haven't ever shot an AR so that info is helpful. I'm sure I'll be playing around with different settings on the stock and find what's good for me. I did get the rifle back yesterday, a little over 3 weeks after they got it, and it looks like it has a new barrel. I think the paperwork with it said "repair/replace barrel" if I remember correctly, and I can tell they took off the flash hider due to some minor wear from the tools. The barrel looks pristine and now I need to get some ammo and get out and shoot it.

I did put the pad on the stock and it was very easy to put on and grips a little better. I need to put on my MIAD grip as the stock one feels too thin in my grip. I need to find a case too, and some ammo. Lots of stuff to buy still! lol
