Default Value of an M&P 15 Rifle?

A neighbor offered me this rifle for trade on my pair of Sig P225 DAO pistols. He placed a value of $550.00 on it. I am thinking I have seen these on sale for less. What is it worth? I already have two AR’s, so I am not dying to own it. Thank you.

I think you would be better off buying one at your LGS. Is that one used, new, Sport I or II ? At $550, I myself would want a new one.

I’d pay $500 max for a used sport in good condition. Less if it has a lot of rounds through it or cosmetic flaws. These can be had at $550 new nowadays.

I agree. Buy a new one for that amount.

You can get a new one for 550. The website "Mr. Gun Dealer" has the optics ready version on sale for 489 right now.

I would value it used, if in like new condition, for about 450.

Shooters have the nasty habit of wanting what they originally paid when trying to sell a current production firearm, and even more than MSRP if they have modified it. Other than being used, manufacturers warrant their products only for the original owner.

The only exception would be an older Sport I with the 5R rifling. They seem to bring a premium.

That might be technically true but I've seen gun makers honor warranties for people who aren't the original owner. I know Marlin will do it. And Springfield did it for me. I bought a used SA XDm .40 with an obvious problem for almost $200 less than the going rate. The LGS owner really thought he pulled one over on me. SA fixed it for free in a very short time. The LGS owner asked me later how I liked that gun (he was a real jerk looking to get a good laugh on how he had got over on me) and when I told him it was great after it was fixed at the factory he about had a cow. His greed cost him about $200.

I probably wouldn't allow him over $350 in cash or trade on the gun right now. The market is very weak. Plus, there are so many of these guns out there, we are just waiting for a massive dump into the used gun market. I have visited five gun stores/pawn shops this week. All of them had a wall full of AR-15 platform rifles as well as display cases full of the black plastic semi-auto handguns. None of this stuff is selling right now. . .plus it's the Summer market. There hasn't been one vintage Smith or Colt for sale around here most all year. The rare ones I've heard about (and missed) all sold the day they came in. This will pretty well tell you where your money should be. . .and where it shouldn't be. Every shop owner has told me that virtually nothing good has come in off the street this year. That is really something for the state of Georgia where great vintage guns walk in off the street weekly.

I don't normally buy "used" unless it's rare or really old. Especially in the AR or AK platforms. Seen too many people doing magdumps playing "Rambo" then can't figure out why it won't keep a group.
