Default Replacement Front Gas Block without sight.

I'm looking at getting Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II 5.56 NATO and was looking to upgrade to a red dot or acog sight.

I know I can remove the front gas break/sight, but is it possible to get a gas break only without the sight portion?

I could file it off I guess , but I was hoping for a more elegant solution.

any idea's?

What you're thinking can be done, but why go through the hassle of changing out the fsb for just a gas block when you can get the OR version that comes with a low profile block.

I don't see much use in even bothering with the front sight unless you plan on putting free float hand guards on it. Mine doesn't bother me at all on this AR.

I got the M&P-15 Optics Ready with M-lok handuard. I like the M-Lok handguard much better than the round style.

^^^^ Yup. If you are getting just a red dot, then leave the front sight post on and co-witness them. If you want an ACOG, then you can easily buy a low profile gas block (not gas break) as said above for relatively cheap. It's not real hard to switch it out, but if you do that you'll also need to swap handguards to a free float rail because the front sight post also helps hold the stock handguard in. If you remove the front sight post and replace it with a low profile gas block, you won't have a place to hold the stock handguard that came with the rifle.

Still, free floating rails are better anyway, so just replace that too while doing it. You can even find free float rails that use the existing stock barrel nut so you don't have to change that which makes the whole process pretty easy.

I've taken a few down with a grinder, takes a couple of minutes, you just have to not cut too much. I like the co-witness idea better. That's what I did with my Colt LE 6290s. Aim Point Pro, Magpul rear flip up sight, stock front a-frame sight and the Pro co-witnessed to the sights.

I'm glad you're happy with yours, but not everyone sees it the same way. I tried to get by with the front A2 sight post, but it just bugged me too much.

I went the super cheap route and just used my Dremel to cut it off. If you don't have the tools or have never done it before, cutting it off is the easiest method. Mine is ugly, but I'm a function over form kind of shooter.

Just my personal experience. I put a "co-witness" red dot on my first gen Sport.

It. Drove. Me. Crazy!

I could not stand seeing the front sight in my optic. It was constantly distracting and annoying. I gladly paid a local gunsmith to replace the gas block on my gun with a sightless version and considered it money well spent.

the most "elegant solution" is build it the way you want...it ain't rocket science as proved by I've done several myself...and NO spare parts that no one wants....I have less than $700 with the optic on this one with Nic-boron BCG enhanced PSA lower build kit and Fortis CH thumbnail_20180803_170410.jpg

Talking

I would recommend a quality AR wrench .....I learned the hard way with a $10 pot metal wrench that twisted out of shape when I put a torque wrench on it...then I splurged on a Magpul
