A LGS has a MP15 used for $1099.
The reason I’m curious is I also have a rifle with the same SKU sticker. I inquired one of the sells guys about it and was told, SW don’t make them like this any more. I don’t think people are seeking the older semi-mil spec M&P15s. This is the archived listing I found to reference the exact rifle. I hate when people try to advantage of the misinformed. Which I’m suspecting is going on here.

The AR-15 market at the moment would laugh hysterically at that price.
Unless some fool who doesn't own firearms and has never put any effort to buy or search prices strolls in to that shop, there's almost zero chance that sells at $1099.
I wouldn't give the shop much grief over it however... it's business as usual. They realize it's a tough sell and low profit anyway, and at that price it doesn't seem as if they are motivated to sell it. I can't agree that anyone would be getting "taken of advantage of", if a buyer walks in and pays that, it's surely not the fault of the gun store.

Just looking at the picture w/o checking the SKU.... IIRC that was about full retail in "this market" for that model (which with all the FDE Magpul MOE stuff was sold/considered an upgrade at the time) in late 2012... just before Sandyhook.
A week later they were about $200 more....... ...... two weeks later everything on the shelves was long gone..... back orders on ARs for the next year.......or more and high $$$$$s.
flash forward to 2016 Election ..... bottom drops out of AR market.
"Used" that's maybe a $700 + gun (with about $180-200 of Magpul parts.)

Here's how it would go..
Walk in store, notice gun. Look at price, chuckle to self and walk out of store.

Very good, I bought about a year before sandy hook. Then SW came out with middy and sport models about the same time mine was discontinued.

I still have a few AR-15s, I did manage to sell a few before the 2016 election when the prices were still favorable for the seller, but yes the bottom did drop out, and unless it's an SP-1 or a high end custom, that $1099 price seems high. I was at a gun show this weekend, and the AR prices did seem to be creeping up again. I think the recent leftist anti-gun push and the midterm elections may have a little to do with it. I'm not a really big AR guy but if I do buy them, usually I stick with Colt. That brand always seems to resale high on the secondary market.

I like builds, which pretty much means I'm never selling them since I'd take a huge haircut.

I guess that gun shop wants to make a 1000% profit, around here, AR's are dirt cheap.

Well, in a free market a vendor can ask any price they want for a gun. It's true that S&W doesn't offer that specific SKU anymore. So what? That gun can be built for around $500 if you spend time looking. It won't be a S&W, but it will be exactly the same thing.
Now, if a person wants that exact set up, with full lifetime warranty, and wants it today, they'll likely pay more. How much more depends on the individual.

There is one for sale locally for $500 - with a bunch of upgrades (YHM flash hider, FDE Magpul stock & grip, BAD lever, trigger guard, RVG & BUIS, Strike Ind. dust cover., Keymod hand guard.)
Whoever is doing the pricing at your LGS is delusional. Or looking to make a 400%-500% profit - which is also delusional.

You can by 2 M4-geries with warranties and 1K rounds for that. Maybe a few extra mags too.

Around here, a very nice PSA AR15 can be had brand-new for about $350. Buy one, and if Magpul furniture floats yer boat, spend another $200 and you have the same rifle for half price.

At that price, it will likely be in the rack when someone breaks the front doors open and grabs it in self defense after the Zombie apocalypse.

Maybe they are just waiting for the right election cycle to bring the panic buying back. They probably have that money minus profit into it from 2012.
They are treating it like a stock purchased just before a crash. Eventually the price will come back around if you hold onto it long enough.

If the unthinkable happens in 22 months, that price will be a bargain, if still legal to own.

AR Market is way flat.... even high end like Knights cant get the 3K price they're asking. I just built 1 up using top quality parts (Larue, Anderson,) and have 1000.00 in it.... the SW is ...well...lits say Average quality.

I just paid $985 out the door for a 6920. MP15 were selling for about $540 at the same gun show.
When the Democrats take White House and Senate next year, those will be $ 2500 and $1500 respectively.
There's already an AWB in the House.

The item in the OP does have some aftermarket goodies-sights, furniture and may/may not have a chrome bore. That price sounds about right back when for a new one.
Some shops-and a lot of people- don't seem to grasp the concept that a used firearm sells for less than a new one. Absent some really desirable features/accessories. I recall shopping for a used 1100 maybe 20 years ago and finding one that looked like it'd been used as a canoe paddle that was priced over $400. I haven't been back to that store, I expect it's still there
The largest LGS has the M&P Sport II available for $550.
