About to buy M&P 15
I’m about to buy an M$P 15 here at the shop. Used. What’s the difference between this and M&P 15 Sport II? I understand some early guns were manufactured by someone other than S&W.
This one has dust cover and forward assist. Has some Magpul furniture. Looks pretty good. I am ignorant about these. Any information or advice appreciated. The price is right, by the way.

Looks like a Sport II that someone put a Magpul handguard on and changed the ejection port cover. The lower has the integral trigger guard, and a standard delta ring on the upper so it leads me to believe it is a Sport II.

Definitely looks like a Sport II with after market add-ons.

Looks like someone didn't know how to properly install a dust cover.

Aftermarket dust cover. I think I'd get rid of that and replace it with a standard dust cover.
Possibly the easiest way to verify model is to check the barrel breech. The M&P15 has a chrome plated barrel & chamber and you'll see the plating on the barrel shank face. The Sports had/have melonite finish and it'll be dark colored.

The original M&P 15 Sport did not have a dust cover or forward assist. They were added to the sport 2.

He said he was looking at a M&P 15, but the pics indicate it is a Sport 2. I am simply pointing out the differences between the M&P 15 Sport and the Sport 2.

Ok, but you realize that there is a model called the M&P 15, right? It is different from the Sport... And it was a "full featured firearm".
Basically, it appears that the OP did not know that the rifle he is looking at is a Sport II with aftermarket accessories on it. He thought the rifle in question was a M&P 15, and wanted to know the difference between it and the Sport II. By showing another model in the M&P 15 lineup, you are going to add to the confusion.

Just for the record the chrome lined barrel was only present on the early M&P Sport models. So was the melonite finish. S&W says the finish they put on later models is essentially the same as melonite but without the brand name. And FWIW no one has complained about any of the 2nd generation M&P Sport models (not the Sport II) rusting in any way. They are all quality rifles IMO. There is a difference between the first generation Sport and the second generation Sport in the twist of the barrel. The first gen. models had 1:8 twist rates. Second gen. models have a 1:9 twist.

The spring is there. Missing the clip if it calls for one.

The Sports never had the chrome lining. Other rifles in the M&P lineup did, but not the Sport.
The first generation of Sports had the 5R, 1:8 twist, melonited barrel with the removable fixed rear sight.
The next iteration replaced the rear sight with Magpul MBUS rear sight.
Then they switched the barrels to the 1:9 twist, "Armornite" barrel finish. These were still called M&P 15 Sport by S&W.
Then they added the forward assist and ejection port cover and rebranded as the Sport II.
