Upgrades to Varmint rifle
Did some upgrades to my Varmint rifle
Luth 223 24” 1/9 twist barrel
VG6 Precision Epsilon 556 High Performance Muzzle Brake
Timney 3lb Single Stag trigger
Shot it yesterday at 100 yards, very happy with the 1/2 groups or less.

Very nice. My Ruger # 1 in 22-250 will shoot into .250 all day at 100 yards.

Thanks!
Yea the weather wasn’t the greatest, it was 20 degrees with a cross wind of 15-18mph shooting from the tripod.
Can’t wait for spring/summer I’ll do some bench rest shooting with no cross wind. But so far very happy with results from barrel

Nice set up!
Tell me about the light on your rifle. Is it a Wicked Light and if so, how do you like it and what color does it emit?
Thx,

Thanks!
The light attached to the scope is my ATN Super Nova 850 IR light for my ATN 4K 3x14 scope for the night Vision. I do have a Streamlight TLR-1 HL 800 lumens attached on the left front of the hand guard, that works very well.

Are you able to watch your hits after adding the brake? Did it add a lot of noise?

With my old muzzle brake (factory stock) I could’nt see the shot hit on the coyote using the night vision because the muzzle slots where all between 10:00 and 2:00 o’clock giving the scope flash blind.
Haven’t had a chance to see what the new VG6 will do. I’m hoping it helps with flash blinding in night vision mode because of the 3:00 and 9:00 muzzle blast/flash holes and having small top slots at 11:00 and 1:00 and small holes at the bottom of the muzzle. I’ll be testing that soon I’ll let you know how it goes.

So you must be using electronic hearing protection to hear well and yet muffle the shot?

"Weather not the greatest"...ya don't say? I don't know about you, but I've had just about enough of this Michigan winter! Come'on Spring! You did a real nice job on your rifle. It looks good and sounds like it shoots just as good as it looks. I have the 3lb Timney (Skeletonized) trigger on my R-15 and like it a lot. I'm running a Cyclops Varmint light with the green light. It work pretty darn good out to 200+ yds. What ammo/bullet/weight are you using? Hornady 55 gr V-Max have been working well for me. Haven't shot any yotes past 300 yds yet, but everything inside of that have pretty much dropped in their tracks. Farthest to date is 282 yds. Michigan is over-run with coyotes, get out there and put a dent in them. Ground hogs, too!

I wear my hearing protection when a target practice but not when I’m hunting. One of these days I’d like to get a silencer for my varmint rifle.

Yea I’m ready for spring/summer. Three weeks ago it was -40 wind chill went Coyote hunting that night, it was cold!!! Didn’t see anything.
Im using Hornady 55 gr V-Max Varmint ammo, best ammo I’ve tried so far. That’s one reason I wanted a 1/9 twist barrel. The farthest shot I’ve gotten on a coyote is only 100 yards.
We have allot of coyotes around our area. I have allot of people who let me hunt there farms and private properties. My son called me couple days ago said he had two more people ask him if I would come out and hunt the coyotes on there property. At the end of January we had our annual Predator Challenge, 140 teams 2-3 people per team

I’m from the very south west lower corner of Michigan
East of where I live is a town called Kalamazoo, the store that holds the event is called D&R Sports Center (link below) you need to sign up a few months before the event they only allow 140 teams and that fills up quick.
Great Lakes Region Predator Challenge in Kalamazoo, MI

Did an other upgrade to the Varmint rifle. Bought the ATN 1500 yard ABL range finder. It connects to the scope via Bluetooth. Scope is sighted in at 100 yards, ammo ballistics specs (Hornady 55g VMax Varmint) are saved in scope.
Range target, scope Reticle is Recalculated per the yardage and ammo specs.
I’ll post a video of it when I get to the range to test.

When we sling these phrases about barrel twist rates remember benchrest rifles have 1-14 and 1-15 twist rates . Projectile length dictates necessary twist rate . The verge of instability generally proves the be the most accurate. Just my two cents

Yes I agree with on the length
When I made the Choice on the barrel I looked at many factors
1.)Bullet being used (Hornady VMax varmint 55g)
2.)Bullet bearing surface length
3.)Overall bullet length
4.)Does it have a boat tail
5.)Bullet nose design (Pointed tip, full metal jacket, flat nose)
6.)Bullet weight
7.)Farthest distance going to shoot (500 yards)
8.)Ogive area radius
9.)Length of barrel to achieve maximum FPS bullet is designed for
10.)Twist rate of barrel for bullet design
So looking at all the information on the 55g VMAX varmint I decided to go with a 24 inch barrel to achieve maximum FPS and to go with a 1/9 twist rate. This way if I ever have to go with a heavier or a lighter bullet I can with the 1/9 twist. But I doubt I will because the Hornady VMax 55g varmints shoot very very well in my rifle.
I know a couple of people who shoot centerfire Competition with a .223 1/14 twist rate, with a 26” Barrel, they shoot 40g hand loads with Excellent results at 100, 200, 300 yards.

Sorry for a late update on the new VG6-epsilon-556 muzzle break. It made a big difference over the stock break that came with the rifle. The flash don’t blind the night vision as much as the stock one did.
Video is with the new VG6.

1st place paid over $4000.00
