First Owned AR-15
Wife got me the best Xmas gift ever. Now I have 4 S&W’s in the fold. Bodyguard 380, SD9, Shield 9mm and the M&P15. Scope will be here Saturday just in time for the 2nd shoot.

Very nice. I'm picking up the exact same gun today and it will also be the 4th S&W for me. I already have a Shield 9, Compact 9 and Compact 22.
Wait, I forgot I also have a 15-22 so this will be my 5th S&W. Now it's on you to catch up!

If you paid taxes you owned the M16 you used also, you just let the USMC take care of “your” gun for you.
Enjoy your new present!

Congrats! Do yourself a favor and replace that MI spec trigger as soon as you can. You won't be sorry. If you can't drop $200+ on a 'top shelf' trigger group (Wilson - Geissele - Elftman - etc.), take a look at some of the drop-in triggers offered by Rise Armament. For around $130 you can get a real decent trigger group that is waaaaaaay better than the stock one.

ARs are handy rifles to have around. If it were me, I would be rounding up a spare parts kit, extra magazines and a generous supply of ammo while the rounding up is good. But I am old so what do I know.

You are headed down the rabbit hole my friend.
The Raptor charging handle is a good one.
If you don't like the trigger, try this first: 15 Minute Practical Trigger Job for the AR-15
It will make a very nice trigger and won't cost you a dime. Well, the polish might cost a couple bucks.
Don't rush into the single point sling. They great for clearing rooms/buildings, but for actually carrying the rifle they're terrible. Look toward a 2 point first. They're more comfortable and can be used to help steady the rifle for longer shots.

Not a bad rifle for starters. You'll likely find yourself down the rabbit hole of upgrades in no time. You've been warned!

To add to the trigger upgrade options. Consider the Larue trigger. I have the MBT-2S ($80+) in six rifles and find it very close to the Geissele ssa-e ($200+). YMMV

Another trigger to look at is ALG if you are looking for something better than the above mentioned trigger job. I think they run for about $40-$50.

the first thing to decide on if replacing the trigger, is single or two stage trigger. The LaRue is a two stage, and can be had with either a curved bow trigger or a straight bow. The ALG is a single stage. Personally, I went with the LaRue curved, only one available at the time. Like the idea of staging the trigger prior to firing. Gives me a little better option. as to whether or not I want to take the shot.

The LaRue MBT is a single stage or two stage and comes with straight or curved bow.
I have used the two stage in both curved and straight and they are fantastic triggers for $80.

I would spend the money on the Geissele if you're planning on competing or using it for Home Defense. I found the Larue triggers have a pretty weak reset. My SSA has had close to 5,000 rounds between matches and range trips and is going very strong. Excellent break and a strong positive reset.

Triggers are everything. You can even get a 580 Ruger Mini to shoot well if you turn a good smiff lose on your trigger group.
Everyone needs a good carbine if for no other reason than "get off of my lawn".
Enjoy.

Congratulations! That's what I have. I also put an MOE handguard on mine; much more comfortable than the stock. Check out the MFT Minimalist buttstock--nice!
Also, consider a riser for the scope, to get a better view over the front sight.

Looks like he has the MOE handguard already. I agree on the riser for the scope, I would even look at a quick disconnect. Then maybe he can fit the rear iron site on there as a backup. Otherwise, a solid first set up that will treat you right and go bang evertime. Congrats OP.

I have a Truglo 3/4 inch riser. With a red dot, it gives a perfect cowitness with irons, and the Magpul MBUS pops up right behind it. Using a LPVO, the folded sight is out of the way.
And yes, a QD sight mount is on my want list.

I sure wish I had an M&P-15 to post, but I don't. All I have is this modest Daniel Defense M4 Carbine 5.56.
I would be more than happy to help you empty your bank account on a few accessories. Here's what I have on this shootin' stick:
Magpul MOE Pistol Grip
Magpul Enhanced Trigger Guard
Magpul Rail Sections
Magpul Bolt Assist Device (BAD)
Magpul MS3 Sling
Magpul Rail Covers
BCM B5 Sop Mod Stock
BCM Gunfighter Model A44 Ambi Charging Handle
BCM Gunfighter Kinesthetic Angled Grip (KAG)
BCM Small QD 'D' Style Sling Mount
Troy Battle Sights (HK style front/flip-up rear)
Battle Arms Development (BADASS) Ambi Selector Switch
Norgon Ambi Magazine Catch
Sprinco Enhanced Buffer Spring
Spikes Tactical Tungsten T2 Buffer
Geissle 13" MK8 (M-Lok) Free Float Fore End
Battle Comp 1.0 Muzzle Device
Tango Down Stubby QD Vertical Grip
Wilson TTU 3-Gun Trigger
Aim Point T1 Micro Red Dot on a LaRue QD Mount & Tango Down Lens Covers
Millett DMS 1-6x24 30mm Scope on an American Defense AD-Recon QD Mount
GG&G XDS-2 Bi-Pod
Surefire M600 Scout Light with SR-6 Switch
Everything is Ambi and QD. Depending on what I type of 'activity' I'm involved in at the time, I can swap out optics and/or, add/remove accessories quick and easy, and the controls can be manipulated with either hand.
I think that's about it. Have fun!!!

That's no longer a carbine, it's a crew served weapon.

I hope you are enjoying your new rifle. Many have stated that ARs are the new 30-30. I think so too and keep one in the rack of my Jeep. It's my pest gun and I have killed a few whitetails with it.
If there is a Palmetto State Armory near you, maybe head over there and pay cash for as much 55 grain ball as possible. They also have a "parts kit" that seems worth while to me.
No one knows what 2020 will bring.

I would be more than happy to help you empty your bank account on a few accessories. Here's what I have on this shootin' stick:
Magpul MOE Pistol Grip

Magpul Bolt Assist Device (BAD)
Magpul MS3 Sling
Magpul Rail Covers
BCM B5 Sop Mod Stock
BCM Gunfighter Model A44 Ambi Charging Handle
BCM Gunfighter Kinesthetic Angled Grip (KAG)
BCM Small QD 'D' Style Sling Mount
Troy Battle Sights (HK style front/flip-up rear)
Battle Arms Development (BADASS) Ambi Selector Switch

Battle Comp 1.0 Muzzle Device
Tango Down Stubby QD Vertical Grip

Everything is Ambi and QD. Depending on what I type of 'activity' I'm involved in at the time, I can swap out optics and/or, add/remove accessories quick and easy, and the controls can be manipulated with either hand.
I think that's about it. Have fun!!!

I bet you have more invested in one than I do in all 3 of mine.
One on the left is has a 16" barrel, other two are SBR's.
They aint Smith's either.

Cool. The Sport II's the best AR in the $500 or so range. I believe that even Pat Rogers, who runs carbine courses, has said so. He prefers BCM, Colt, etc. for hard-use guns, but he sees a lot of budget guns, and proclaimed that the Smith was the one that worked.
Someone I know has both a Sport and a Colt 6920. Colt sits in the safe and the Smith gets fired.
If I had one that had fired 400 rounds with no problema, I'd rely on it in the L.A. Riot.

Have you tried firing the gun with them and discovered what actually happens?

Let's see, what can you add next? How about a Lantec Dragon muzzle brake. It may bark a bit louder, but you will have zero muzzle rise no matter how fast you pull the trigger. You can thank me later.
