M&P 15 Sport II Barrel Stamp?
I apologize if this thread is posted somewhere else and I didn't see it.
I just purchased a new M&P 15 Sport II and noticed when I got home that there is no stamp on the barrel indicating the caliber and twist. I contacted S&W CS and all they said was that it was on the top of the barrel near the muzzle, but I sent pictures and it is clearly not. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned?
Thanks for your help!

I can imagine that's not common -- but why would it be a concern?

Could also be under the hand guards.

Just make sure the bore looks "rational", before
you bust a cap...if they missed the roll-mark,
no telling what else might be missing (hopefully
nothing!).

Would not be happy if it were mine.

Yeah, I'm not real happy about it. You would think that S&W's quality control people wouldn't have let it leave the building without a stamp on it.
My concern is putting 5.56 through an unmarked barrel and having it explode.
I tried looking through the holes in the hand guard with a flashlight but didn't see anything. I'll take the hand guards off later tonight and take a look.

Something to think about...S&W manufactures ar15's in more than one caliber. I believe, that I would insure that S&W would remedy this issue. Down the road it could (on resale...etc) cause problems.

You bought new in box? If so, does the box label say 5.56?
Does the serial number on the box match the one one the receiver?

I bought it new the box. The label on the box says 5.56 and the serial numbers match. However, the serial number is only for the lower.

Could be a dealer rip off. The Dealer takes some garbage uppers sold off by Remington, pulls a swap and then sells the S&W uppers. Take it back to the dealer, if they try any BS call the COPS!
Geoff
Who notes there are some very questionable dealers out there.

I’m going over there at 10:00 am when they open. I checked under the hand guards and there’s no marking under there either. Hopefully it will get resolved.. If not, I paid with a credit card so I can claim that I received counterfeit merchandise.

Even if it's got 5.56 or .223 marked under the handguards,
it's a barrel that didn't complete the "normal" build
sequence.
Was the barrel roll-marking, the only step that was left
out--or more?
55,000 PSI, give or take, eight inches from your face...

What makes you say this? Many manufacturers mark the barrel where it would be hidden under the hand guard. I would have to go look, but I think my Sport has the marking under the hand guard. I know my BCM rifle does.

I took it in and we broke it down side by side with two other Sports that had barrel marking on the top by the muzzle. Everything in the upper was identical. 6 groove, 1 in 9 twist. It looks like this might be a case of it just missed the stamping process. I'm guessing that S&W's quality control team probably looks at one out of every 15 rifles that go down the line so it is possible that one sipped through. However, I'm going to call them on Tuesday and see about sending it back to them. Maybe they'll stamp it or give me a new upper.

I don't blame you for wanting the barrel to be stamped. Glad you can look at it logically and see that it just slipped through the QC process and it isn't some conspiracy about a dealer trying to rip you off, or S&W sending unsafe rifles out the door. Give them a call, they will make it right. Just sucks that you have a new rifle and can't enjoy it immediately.

Do you really believe this? That a dealer would take the upper off and replace with an inexpensive upper? What kind of specs would that upper have? Carbine gas system, 4140 barrel, 1:9 twist, fixed front sight, and cheap hand guards without heat shields?... oh, wait a sec...

That's weird, if they missed the barrel stamp , what else did they miss? I would send it back...
