Default Vortex Razor AMG UH-1 optic question

Hello I am considering the Vortex Razor AMG UH-1 optic for my M&P 15 rifle and I see that some people are just using just the optic and others are using a 3 X magnifier with the optic. What distance do you normally start using a magnifier at? At this point most of my shooting will likely be 100 yards or less but I might go out to 200 yards but I would think that would be the furthest I would be going at this point. All shooting will be at the range with some 3 gun matches as here in Canada that is the only place I can use the rifle.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

That’s really up to you, honestly. What size are the targets you’ll be shooting at? With the 2-gun competitions I usually shoot, most targets are full IPSC out to 200 yards, and I’ve never had an issue making hits on target at that distance with irons or an unmagnified red dot (even an old 4MOA AimPoint).

For ME and my preferences, I wouldn’t want to lug around the extra weight of a magnifier unless I either needed greater precision than what the sight itself offered, needed positive target ID, or was regularly shooting 200y or more. If you can see the target, ID it, and don’t need MOA at distance, then that 1MOA dot in the center of the Huey’s reticle will be more than good enough for the fast shooting you’re likely to encounter with most 3-gun type shooting.

HOWEVER, check with the match director or others who shoot these matches often. I know some 3-gun comps stretch things out quite a ways, so the MD or regular shooters will know better what the courses of fire will look like.

By the way, I love my Huey. It’s not an Aimpoint or an EOTech, but it’s a solid optic, and the CQB triangle at the base of the reticle is great for account for sight offset close in! They’re releasing a GenII version sometime this summer that will be NV compatible.

rather then go with the red dot/ magnifier combo, why not go with a LVPO in the 1-6 or 1-8x range. they can be had with an illuminated reticle. that way you'll have the best of both worlds. and it will be a simpler setup.

The UH-1 is a great optic if you can find one.

Whether or not you need magnification depends on your eyesight. If you have decent eyes, get the UH-1 first and see how you do. You can always add the 3X later if you want.
