Default First impressions w/ my new Sport 2

Picked up a new Sport 2 the other day, model 10202 w/ the stock sights which is what I wanted. Wiped her down and yesterday in between bands of rain I snuck in to the local range. I wasnt worried about trying to sight it in as it was very windy; just wanted to go thru a couple mags worth and get a feel for my first AR.

Initial impressions?
That thing is fun to shoot, will fit in well with my hobby.
I’ll need to get some thinner ear muffs, the bulky ones I have work great but make it difficult to get close to the stock.
I like how balanced it is, considering I wear a brace due to arthritis in my left thumb it felt comfortable to hold.
Ammo. I was able to grab a couple boxes with my purchase but until it becomes more available will use it sparingly. Not like how i may play with my 22’s at the range.

The target on the left was at 50 yards (6” targets are not easy to see with grandpa eyes lol), sitting using a sandbag up front. The one on the right was just standing at 25 yards, where the wind really was felt making it hard to stand still. All things considered I am happy with the results, knowing except for my little Tcr22 I have not owned or shot other rifles and have been just a handgun guy.

Overall I am very happy with this one, and am looking forward to a lot of fun use with it.

Congrats on the new shootin' stick. AR platforms are very versatile, indeed. Learn how to operate it until you can do it with your eyes closed, including clearing any 'malfunctions'. The iron sights are plenty useful, but, maybe a red dot of some type might help out with those ol' geezer eyes. As far as ammo goes, get what you can while you can! Keep it cleaned and lubed, and have fun.

Ear plugs are the way to go. The yellow foam type are the best out there if inserted properly. They're cheap, readily available and work better then muffs.

IMO, get some "Walker" type rechargeable electronic ear plugs. They allow you to get your max foam-protection while also magnifying voice-level conversation without determent. After blowing out my ears because "I forgot" the big muffs on reload. I will NEVER have less! Yeah, and even at 67 (at the time), it is NEVER too late to pay attention!

I also am new to the AR platform. I got my 15/22 just before it "hit the fan" this year, good timing on my part, new toy to play with thru "lockdown". I'm very happy with it even if it is not a tight shooting gun [4" @ 50 yds] it is lots of fun & that's what counts. I put on a red dot early on and it is my first "dot" and it is not a perfect answer for old eyes, not bad but also not great. If you decide to try that also suggest you try one before you buy so you know what your getting. I also added a Harris bi-pod and that seems to be a nice addition. I like the lite weight of the 15/22 and the bi-pod does not add much to it [abt. 8oz.] but gives instant stability. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

Yeah, the electronic ears are fantastic, but the foamies are like $0.02/each.

Twice, in my excitement to get to shooting, I have forgotten my ear plugs. Once with a .223Rem and once with a .308Win. I hope I never do that again.

I have some good foam ear plugs that i have used when shooting my 22’s outdoors, just wasnt sure how different the 223 could be sound wise. As yes if i can be comfortable about my hearing protection and get away without the bulky muffs outdoors anyways that would definitely help.

Yeah, in my case I lost +15db in both ears and now have a persistent rattle in my right ear... 8-(

Sounds like another happy camper for the Sport II. I have an original Sport which I really like. I also have a Sport II which I have owned for 4 years now and have never shot. I’m thinking that when I get home from vacation, that maybe I should get around to it and get it sighted in and make sure that it functions properly.

You can’t hit what you can’t see. Put an optic of some sort on that rifle and double your enjoyment of it. I use a variety; a 3x Nikon, 2x-7x Leupold, PA 2.5x ACSS, Bushnell Enrage and TRS-25 along with the standard irons. Red dots do not work well for some eyes, handle a few before you buy one.

I don't know the "official" purpose, but they sure are handy if you have a quick detach optic. This way you can be sure to put it back on in the same place.

^^ that makes sense. I did see a vid of someone installing a quad rail and that had the same numbering system (in order) to continue from where they leave off on the site rail.
