Default Help with M lok and accessories please

New user and owner of an M&P Sport II Chambered in 556/223.

Looking to add some accessories and a Quad rail, and would like some advice from other users. I want to make sure I am buying the right things.

Wishlist contains front grip, bipod, and sling.

Open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

IMO, other than ear protection, just WAIT. Shoot it at ~100yd for 6-months or so and then, and only then, consider what you may actually need (as opposed to WANT). Just my $0.02

Personally I don’t want or need a bunch of accessories attached to my AR”s. I have Magpul MOE furniture, which accepts M lok items, on a few of them. I have attached sling mounts and a bipod stud on two of them, had a light on another but took it off and put it on a kid’s gun. A set of Magpul MOE furniture will cost just under $100.00.

I agree with the advice of shooting it for a while and then decide what changes to make, if any. Right out the gate, your thread title asks about M LOK, but your thread states quad rail... two totally different systems.

You can add a sling as the rifle is today. When you say "front grip", do you mean a vertical grip? And why the bipod? I use sandbags when shooting from a bench. Try to keep the rifle as light as possible for hunting and shooting from field positions.

I thought M LOK made a quad rail for the weapon. I am mistaken. I have read that M LOK has more versatile accessories and that the accessory manufacturers are using their spec, if they pay a fee for rights, so thought it would be a better system to stick to because if I see M LOK it will work. I guess i am just looking to make sure that what I buy will work.

I do not see a front sling attachment to it, do I need to buy anything with the sling to make it attach or just the swivel clip that will come with the sling? 1 point or 2 point recommendation?

Yes, vertical grip is what I meant, and yes a bipod. I have seen some vertical grips with built in bipods but what I am reading gives both the pros and cons of the integrated system vs independent. From the articles I've read the integrated will not add as much weight, but you may lose some of the actual use of the bipod due to positioning on the rail to use the grip.

Good point on shooting with it before adding to it.

Get a Binary Trigger for sure, if legal in your state.

Default This!

Hold off on accessories until you have a better understanding on current trends in the AR world, almost endless and confusing at first!

Quad rails are out of date when compared to what is available today.

Google: "AR 15 handguards"

Notice "quad rails vs. Keymold vs. M-lok!

Hand guard length and gas block also have to be considered when selecting options and accessories!

Google: "AR 15 .com forums " for additional info and go crazy!

Smiles,

Ok, so for a sling, there is a hole in the bottom of your gas block. You will need to buy a quick detach sling swivel and it will lock into the hole on the bottom of the gas block. I'm old school, so I go with a two point sling.

Really, that is all you need to get shooting. You already have your optic. If I was going to spend any money on that rifle today, I would purchase a good set of backup sights, sling swivel and sling, and a bunch of ammo.

I just bought a QD Swivel sling mount to test this. It fit right under my gas tube block. Don't think I'll ever use it there but its good to know it works.

One of the reasons that I recommended waiting, as above, I personally already have a great +200yd Remington #722 (circa Jan.1953) that I first fired in about 1958-59 with my father. Fast-forward to this year, 2020, and I found myself with an over-abundance of reloading supplies in the .222/.223 bullets, powder, primers, etc. Knowing that I over-estimated my .222 needs, I ended up adding a new Sport-II for HD. My personal HD distances are no more than 50yd in all directions, so I made the personal choice to go without additional optics and just depend on the iron sights. If I did not already have my Scoped Rem #722, I would most likely have the same desires as the OP in wanting to add accessories.

IMO, having scoped optics with less than 50yd targets, could be a difficult situation to deal with, in a split second.

A MUST have on all of my AR’s are backup iron sights (buis). The weakest thing on red dot sights is the battery and there is no way to know how long a battery will last. Scopes are very durable but they can get damaged or fog up. BUIS may save the shooting match or a hunt or survival.

Magpul polymer fold down sights are well made and have a good reputation and are affordable. Being polymer they are on the large size though.

There are flip up front and rear sights are small and not noticeable when folded down. Magpul also makes PRO sights that are metal and much smaller. I have a front and rear set of UTG sights on a couple of my AR’s that also have either scopes or red dot sights. They are less expensive than Magpuls and maybe less durable due to their size. I sighted them when I installed them and it is highly unlikely I will never need to use them but there is that Murphy fella out there.

I am giving a lot of thought of adding a Daniel Defense fixed rear sight to a current project that also has a fixed tower front sight mainly to build a rugged rough duty AR.

Other than the buis I would spent the money buying ammunition and spend the time on the shooting range to really decide what accessories you need.

Great advice as there is a TON of options available as far as upgrades. I would invest in more AR magazines while they are still decently priced. Regular used GI mags can sometimes be found in the 'used' bins at your local gun store (LGS) or on gun show tables. Most polymer mags: Magpul, Hexmag, Amend2, Lancer, are super reliable and still relatively cheap. But the way ammo prices have shot up and how scarce it has become, mags might follow suit.

As noted, less is more.

Military and police rifles get festooned with gear for mission specific reasons. Most rifles used by civilians probably also have mission specific gear too. For instance, I have very different slings on rifles depending if they are 3Gun Competition or for 100yd accuracy shooting. Let mission drive the gear. What is the intended use of the M&P?

That said, I sling almost every rifle or shotgun.
MLOK is great nonetheless, sometimes too great.
