This may be a silly question. But I want to replace the standard pistol grip on my sport 2 with a magpul MOE

Anyhow. The new magpul grip comes with a replacement screw that bith a standard or Phillips screwdriver will work.

when I look up into the standard grip on my sport2. I can see the screw that holds the grip on. However there seems to be no allen hex, any means on the screw head to allow removal of the screw!

My question is: How the hell do I remove the grip without essentially any apparent means or tool that will loosen the existing S&W manufactured screw to replace the grip???

I must be missing something blatantly obvious here!

I have 3 different AR rifles and believe they all 3 use allen head screws/bolts. Use a flashlight and take a closer look, they have to come out some way. :-)

The pistol grip is held in by a screw that has either a hex head, or, slotted screw. That's it. Once you do get the screw removed, pay attention as you remove the pistol grip, as it holds in the selector/safety switch spring/detent.

Ok. Under very close inspection with magnifying glasses and a flashlight. I do see it is an allen type head.

So how do I keep the safety selector detent spring in place as it is all unseen from what I can tell.

Clearly I am new to working on AR platform.

You have the rifle sitting upside down on the bench and slowly remove the pistol grip. This will prevent spring and detent from falling out and the unlikely possibility of the spring flying across the room.

I really didn’t like the stock grip due to the finger “bump”. I thought about just grinding it off but I don’t like using such a crude method so for a few bucks I got the magpul grip.

So far I like the magpul grip. At least the feel of it. Have not shot it yet with the new grip.

Glad you got it figured out. Piece of cake, right? The MagPul pistol grip is much better than the stock one. Now, replace that ****** stock trigger. Be careful, though. Those AR platforms are money pits....lol Enjoy!

I know you've already changed it, but to anyone changing an AR type grip for the first time, as mentioned, be careful with the safety detent spring. Try to remove the grip slowly, as to not lose the detent or spring, but just as importantly, don't follow the grip screw out with the grip, but pull it straight down from the receiver, to keep from tweaking the spring. Seen more than a few of them kinked.

One nice thing about the 15-22 is the factory safety selector can be reversed to the RH side of the receiver. It's nice for lefty's to not have to spend for an aftermarket piece, and those of us that have to use a Thordsen stock.

Friend of mine let me try out his trigger. It was amazing. Geissell SSA. Midway has them for $240. I only paid less than $500 the whole sport 2 rifle two years ago. Not sure I want to drop that kind of cash right now.

I also want to get a Sig Romeo 5XDR which is also in the $230 to $250 range.

I am also thinking about stocking up on ammo. As it is harder to come by then hens teeth lately around my location. And when found you are limited to 1 or 2 twenty round boxes per person.

No doubt about it Geissele makes one of the best triggers for AR's. Same with Wilson Combat, Timney, Trigger Tech, Elftmann, and a few others. But, they are all in the $200-$300+ price range. Well worth the cost but a lot of folks don't want to spend that much on a trigger. You can still get a real good trigger for around $150 or less. ALG Defense (a sister company of Geissele), Rise Armament, are just a couple of good 'budget' triggers. Way better than any milspec factory trigger. Decide what your allowable budget is, and whether you prefer a 2-Stage, or, Single Stage trigger, and go from there. Dropping the coin on a trigger upgrade is well worth the investment.

You could get a decent trigger AND a halfway decent RDS for probably around $300 or less. For instance, you can get something like a Vortex Crossfire 2 for $150.00, and a Rise Armament High Performance Trigger for $120.00. Both of which are on sale right now at Primary Arms. You may want to look into that.

Finally....Good Luck on your quest for ammo, for the foreseeable future, anyway. Get what you can, while you can! The best trigger and/or optic in the would ain't worth a plug nickel if you don't have anything to shoot out of the barrel.

Exactly, they are way way easier, and nowadays, more expensive then 1911s to play with.

Geissele has a G2S trigger, a basic version of the SSA, for $165. Only difference is it's not laser engraved. Good money in a good trigger is the best money you'll spend on an AR, and the cheapest Geissele is way better than the best milspec factory trigger you'll find. I have a Geissele HSNM-Designated Marksman trigger in mine, and love it.

If you are looking for a decent trigger without going to a high end trigger price, check in ALG (a company owned by Geissele's wife). There is two models. One that just improves the trigger pull and another that improved the pull and reduces the pull weight. I don't remember the prices and it has been a few years since I go one for my AR. I think they were $80 and $100 respectively.


EDIT: I looked up the triggers on Brownells. They are selling at $56 and $70 but are out of stock. Other sellers might have them in stock.


As far as the grip, that's personal preference. I have a magpul grip on my M&P10 and I do like it. My AR has a mil spec grip and the hump doesn't bother me. At least not bother me enough to make me want to change it.
