So it looks like I've got a 2019-manufactured M&P 15 Sport II with crimson trace. Going to clean her and hopefully get to the range soon. Anyone have any first timer advice with these?

I had a Colt and an Olympic Arms AR-15 decades ago and I thought they were OK but not great and I sold them and made a big profit. Then I built a couple when the parts were really cheap and accessories were cheap and they're more accurate than the early ones and I really started appreciating them. I would tell the OP to just start shooting it and enjoying it.

My 1st "AR15" was the full auto version and I didn't care for it at the time. Pretty much stayed away from them until California told me I shouldn't have one. I think I'm up to about 10 now and all sorts of uppers.

Much as I like the bolt and single shot, lever action types and the work it can take to make them perform well, there's something about being able to drop in parts, add an upper and create a whole new type of rifle.

You did good. Welcome from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Get out and send some rounds down range. Give us a feed back on how it goes.

Take a lot of ammo as they are fun to shoot and eat up rounds fast. If you take it apart and clean it you will know how to break it down so you should be able to solve any problems easy enough. I would be surprised if you have any problems though they are pretty dependable.

Yep, run it wet with light oil and it will go & go. There is a bunch of hype out there about self-lubricating BCGs & such - there ain't no such critters.

I've been told many times that they don't care much about being dirty but they need to be kept wet.

I don't always clean if I only run a mag or two, but mine get oiled after every range trip.

Thank you everyone. I have the M&P 15 Sport II OR. Will the Magpul MOE MLok carbine length handguard fit my rifle? I don't have iron front and rear sights so I wasn't sure how it would look or fit without them. Thank you.

I have never been addicted to heroin, or those other addictive drugs,,
but,,,
the AR must come pretty close,,

I had one for over a decade, then I wanted an "OR",, and I lucked into a used one at a gunshow,,

It don't look like much, but, it shoots great, and came with a 22LR conversion kit,,,

This one has allowed me to "learn" without worrying about damaging an expensive gun,,

If there was more ammo around, I am positive that I would own WAY more of these things,,,

I have a question for you. So many people are buying firearms just recently, for the first time in their lives. What made you want to buy an AR right now and not in the past?

Great question! Until recently I lived on the east coast so owning anything was highly difficult. With the way things are right now I wanted a versatile platform. I saw my neighbors Springfield Saint Victor and talked my wife into getting a AR but couldn't spend that kind of money. I ended up getting a used M&P 15 with 3 mags and a soft case for $700.00. Been staring at her every night!

78Fleetwood,

I would encourage you to buy more magazines. Magazines at the moment have not become a panic item so they are available and affordable. In fact Brownells is running 30 round magazines on sale.

Oh I believe in owning 10 magazines for each AR I have.

Check GUNMAGWAREHOUSE. I just recently bought 2-10 packs of HEXMAG 30 rd. mags for 89.95 each pack + $4.99 shipping. They're just as good as MAGPUL.

I bought mine from AIM SURPLUS. They have the BEST prices on MAGPUL furniture. I prefer the MAGPUL MOE SL brand/model.
Another thing you might want to replace is the pistol grip. Again, I chose a MAGPUL brand.

I def want to get a hand grip too. Thanks for the tip! Handgrip runs about 20.00 and the handguard about 35.00 at my local shop.

Default Hinge pin problems

I have owned my first AR (Sport II) for less than a week. I found some youtube videos on disassembly, cleaning and reassembly. I got it apart last night, including the bolt carrier group, and thoroughly cleaned it inside and out. Reassembly went fine until I tried to put the upper and lower back together. The hinge pin holes seem to line up just fine, but the pins will not seat. When I separated the upper and lower again I finally was able to seat the pins through the empty holes, but with twisting and considerable effort. After realigning the upper and lower yet again, I had the same problem. After two hours I still could not press the pins into place and it still remains in two pieces. I put a little pressure on the pins with a rubber sanding block trying to save my sore thumb but without success. The pins will slightly twist but will not seat. Since I am mechanically challenged, I am not good at improvising on equipment that is smarter than I am. With it being brand new and still in warranty, I'm not going to hammer or sand anything. Does anyone have any ideas? I do have a Kel-tec gen1 sub-2000 I have loaded up with Mcarbo parts and have completely disassembled 9-10 times in the last five years, but I have to watch the take-down and reassembly videos every time (told you I was challenged). Except for not being able to pin my carbine back together, the AR is a breeze compared to the sub 2000. If this subject has been addressed before, I apologize. I'm 77 years old and not great on this kind of computer activity. Last night was enough to make a preacher cuss, but don't ask me how I know for I won't tell you.

I had built 7 AR's prior to buying my Ruger AR556. All of the assembly pins on the 7 went in as smooth as butter. But, my AR556 gave me problems right out of the box. I finally used my small rubber mallet to knock them in far enough to then use my thumbs to get them in the rest of the way.
After a few weeks of fighting with them I called Ruger. They told me I must have bought a TIGHT ONE. In other words, the clearances and tolerances were extraordinarily precise and to just keep working them and they would come around eventually. And, Ruger was correct. After about a month they had finally broken in.

Hey Fleetwood, If those sights are polymer, you can expect the front one to melt mounted on the gas block. Metal sights will work mounted there, but not plastic ones.

There are detents that hold or prevent the pins from coming out of the lower receiver. If the detents get burred or damaged the pins can be hard to put back in. Line up the front pin and try to push it in or tap it gently. with a rubber mallet. Rotate the upper down onto the lower and then push the back pin in.

The pins should not rotate as the detent slides in a groove in the pin.
Those pin should slide in and out relatively smoothly when the upper is removed from the lower receiver

I really like my MOE handguard and MOE K2 pistol grip. They both improve the feel of the rifle greatly. I also replaced the buttstock with the MFT Minimalist stock. All in black, but that's just me.

I have read, and heard that MANY of the MAGPUL sights are knockoffs,
I was at a gun show about a month back, and asked one guy how much his new front sight was,,, "$12" was the answer.
Well, the price pretty much tells that one was a knockoff. He had a table full of the stuff.
With him, the first give away was where the paint was chipped, there was "white powder"
I think that was oxidized zinc,,,

There are a LOT of parts that are cheap knockoffs, designed for the "AirSoft" customers.

I guess the parts are virtually identical, packaging , and all.
The knockoffs are usually just molded zinc,

So, how do insure I am getting real MagPul??

Well, the price pretty much tells that one was a knockoff. He had a table full of the stuff.
With him, the first give away was where the paint was chipped, there was "white powder"
I think that was oxidized zinc,,,

There are a LOT of parts that are cheap knockoffs, designed for the "AirSoft" customers.

I guess the parts are virtually identical, packaging , and all.
The knockoffs are usually just molded zinc,

So, how do insure I am getting real MagPul??

OR, go to a reputable store such as Academy, and pick one up. They can also order if not in stock.

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the forum.

You will find that AR's are like S&W pistols and revolvers (and potato chips), you can't have just one.

As other members have mentioned, mags are still available and at reasonable prices, stock up if you can.

Ammo, different story, at least where I am. I suppose that's the rest of the country. But anyway...

Good luck and enjoy it.

That's strange. When I posted the link, it was for regular MBUS sights. Now, they're not there and only the MBUS Pro can be found. Sorry.

Well that is really good to know. I will look into that!

Mine has a bare fraction-of-inch play, but so did the original handguards. It seems to be normal for the attachment method.

I don’t know where the right forum is but I recently recently got a 9mm AR Pistol, Brigade Arms. Looked exciting. Anyone have any experience with these awesome things?

Right now, more ammo if you can luck up on it without breaking the bank. Seriously shoot it a whole bunch until it's familiar as an old shoe, and decide from that what kind of shooting you'll probably want to do with it; e.g., home defense, long range work, tactical games, varmint hunting - then you'll know what you might change or add to your satisfaction. There's so much stuff out there for AR's, you can easily waste a lot of money trying stuff and end up not liking it or needing it.
In the meantime - scrounge ammo, magazines, and read.
