Default Magpul MOE SL guard on Sport II OR?

'evening all, I did some searching and couldn't locate an answer to this specific question.

Has anyone tried to put a Magpul MOE SL handguard on an M&P15 Sport II OR? The essence of the question is, is the handguard compatible with the gasblock used on the optics-ready model?

The Magpul site does say it must be used with the A2 front site gasblock, but looking at the pictures I can't see why it wouldn't work with the OR gasblock. It would appear the notch in the top of the guard would fit the rail gasblock.

If it doesn't fit and can't easily be trimmed to fit, does anyone have any suggestions for other drop-in handguard options for the optics-ready model that would accomodate this gas block? S&W sku for my specific model is 12936.

Hello ZZ. I posted the same question a while back. One reader did use the SL, but I put on the MOE M-Lok. I have the Sport II OR as well and if I have a hand guard that goes past the gas block then I would also have to add a new quick connect harness point to it because that’s currently where it resides. It can be done though from what others have posted.

Default UPDATE: done, but with modifications

Just to followup. I was able to install the Magpul MOE SL handguard on my OR model M&P15, but it did NOT just drop right in without some effort. The top section of handguard has a notch to accommodate the A2 fixed sight gas block on the regular model, but this notch is not deep or wide enough for the railed gas block from the OR model.

This was a fairly easy adjustment to make with a Dremel. I just carefully ground the notch larger with repeated test fittings until it fit around the the gas block. I had to further enlarge it a bit so that MBUS folding sight mounted on the gas block would clear it.

I'm satisfied with the result so far. Gotta go to the range and try it out.

Just a word of warning. From your pictures it looks like your using original style plastic sights.

That railed front gas block will get HOT. Hot enough to melt those sights. I believe Magpul warns not to mount them on gas blocks, but instead the handguard ONLY.

Yeah, I've heard that. I'll replace with a metal backup sight after this one melts.
