Default Need Your Help with Lighting Add-ons

I'm looking for lighting for home defense.

I just installed a HiLight P10GL on my Glock 17. I like the size, white light, and LED beam.

I'm looking for at least a light, maybe an LED or red dot for my M&P 15 Sport ii and wanted your advice.

I'm aware of the Vortex Venom, and saw a couple of favorable reviews about it on YouTube, but I have to admit that I am a total newbie about to the red dot concept.

What are the pros and cons of an LED beam (for lack of a better term on my part) and red dot?

What brands and models do you recommend?

Thanks

You'll find lots of fans of red dots here.

Personally, I'm not sold on them (yet), but the one I still have on my "possible" list is the Sig Romeo 5. Very good reputation and affordable.

For home defense, you need to know that shooting an AR-15 inside the house will be VERY loud! My AR-15 is primarily for outside the home property defense, and it is equipped with a Streamlight Protac HL-X.

I do recommend the Streamlight line for long weapon lights. They also make combo light / laser sight models, if that is what you want.

Whatever you decide on, don't buy from Amazon. They are rife with counterfeit knockoff weapon lights and sights. Buy from a reputable gun store, on line or local.

Thanks to both of your.

SchemaEnigma, one of the joys of living in California is that the Sig Romeos are banned; Amazon won't ship it to me (why, I don't know).

I'm aware of the loud noise of the .223 indoors and will have ear muffs bedside.

Maybe it is that evil name... "Sig".

(Also check my edit about Amazon.)

What does your budget look like? You wanna go top shelf? Trijicon or Aimpoint for optic, and Surefire for weapon light. Plenty to choose from. I happen to be partial to the Aimpoint Micro red dot (T1/T2) on a LaRue LT751 QD mount, and the Surefire Scout light w/SR07 Weapon Light Switch. That's about the best of the best. But, you don't have to break your bank account. There's plenty of other decent options out there for both RD optics and weapon illumination. Olight, Streamlight to name a couple of other lights. EoTech, Holosun, Burris, and a few others for RD optics. Just don't 'cheap out' on either with Chicom garbage. You get what you pay for especially in the illumination and optic categories. You want both to work when you need them the most!

Thanks.
Beautiful gun!

I'm looking for home defense and need accuracy only between 6 and 20 feet, given my home's layout (narrow hallway, lots of turns to bedrooms), so I'm not sure that I really need a top-of-the-line? Recommendations on that?

And when I go to the range, what is the optimal distance to target to practice and calibrate/align the iron sights and laser/red dot?

I'm going to train myself to use the iron sights as a back up.

Thanks. For your CQB situation maybe you should consider something like a 16" bbl 20 ga. with maybe #3 buck shot?

For a light, maybe something like this? That should serve your purpose well.

Odin Mini Tactical Light

Zero at 25 yds and confirm zero at 100 yds.

Just remember, if zero at 100 yds. when shooting at say 20 yds. you'll need to hold high due to the sight-over-bore on the AR. Roughly 2" +/- a little depending on the type of iron sights.

I just went with Surefire M600DF, haven't put it on yet, but 1500 lumens is AWESOME for lighting up the property around the house.

Thanks.

My plan (unless Mike Tyson punches me in the face, LOL), is to stay indoors in case something goes bump in the night, call the cops, and barricade myself in the master bedroom, where I sleep (though I'm not trained in clearing rooms, my dog seems to be). Even outdoors, my entire backyard is about 30 feet by 20 feet with fences on three sides.

Also, I just finished reinforcing ALL doors in my house with three inch screws, installed "beware of dog" and "security cameras on premises," have a tough German Shepherd indoors, have security bars (I call them lean tos) on the hallway entry door, backyard, and main door installed when I'm at home.

That means using a gun will be my last line of a layered defense, though I live in a part of Kalifornistan where a generous Castle Defense and, in essence, stand your ground laws, apply.

It's my understanding that for indoor home defense, about 500-600 lumen is optimal, being able to visualize backyards to 75 feet. Anyone know otherwise?

It seems to me that a defense gun that might be used at 2 to 7 yards should be set up for, and trained with at, 7 yards.

Huh? Even a firearm that is set-up with a 500 yd zero would be pretty much center mass hits at 2-7 yds and well beyond that.
