Default M&P 15 sport ii front sight tool

UPDATE: I got a new sight post for my rifle and now it all works just fine. My rifle must have come with an out of spec sight post that was too big.

Figured I'd post this so if anyone else has this issue and finds this post they can save some time and just order a new post vs worrying about different sight tools. ALL my site tools work fine now.

I did a search and found this as been asked a lot but never really a solid answer that a certain front sight tool will work with the Sport ii 's A2 sight.

The space between the protective wings on the top of the sight post on this rifle are a lot more narrow that other A2 sights and the sight tool I bought doesn't fit.

Not to sound like a jerk but to avoid the multiple "use a bullet answers"... Yes I was in the Army and I did it that way. Not the answer I'm looking for...

To those who'll will say "once you set it you'll never use the tool so its a waste of money". I can afford the $10 so not the answer I'm looking for...

Again not trying to sound like a jerk, but every thread I find on this forum where someone asks this question those seem to be the main responses and they don't answer the question.

Please only respond if you can say that you have found a front sight tool that works with their Sport ii A2 front sight post.

Is the tool you bought metal or plastic? I've found that the metal ones have a thinner barrel and might work better for you. I don't have an M&P15 and my M&P10 and M&P15-22 didn't come with the A2 sight, so I can't say for sure how well the metal tool would work.

Looks like the same sight tool that came with a set from Real Avid that i bought. I didnt need to adjust the front sight but the tool using the 4 prong side fits fine on mine. Not sure if some Sport 2’s had different setups?

It isn't fast, but a pin punch works to get you sighted in.

If you buy an AR-15 from Ruger a front sight adjustment tool is in the box as well.
It's not as nice as the tool posted in Ranger17's reply, but it works.

You're not alone OP. Not all that uncommon on assorted brands these days. I've had 2 which required scaling down.

I'm thinking I might change to this front sight so this might become a non-issue:

A.R.M.S.(R) #41™-B Silhouette™ > ARMS | ARMS

Does anyone have any experience with this sight?

Wouldn't that still have the same issue of needing a tool that fits between the protective ears? What does that sight do for you? If I was going to mess with changing the gas block, I would free float it and put Magpul buis on it.

The point being the aftermarket sight would likely be acceptable of the tool as compared to the factory, arguably out of spec, front sight. But no way would I spend near that kind of money for a front sight on a M&P anything. Under 10 minutes of work on a basic tool and all is well.

Wait....you originally wanted to find a $10 sight tool that will work with the Sport A2 front sight, and don't want to use an expedient method like bullet tip, firing pin, punch, etc., all of which work equally well to adjust the AR front sight. So, instead you want to buy an almost $200 front sight as a cure for a problem that doesn't even exist?! Am I missing something here??

That A.R.M.S. folding sight is totally unnecessary and there are way better folding sights available than that one anyway. Save your money or spend it something that will actually be a useful upgrade, like some type of optics, or a nice trigger.

Honestly I didn't notice it cost that much!!!

I was googling ideas on what might be causing my problem and saw a picture of that sight and thought it would be a fun add on. I probably had a dozen tabs open and wasn't really paying close attention, just liked the looks of it.

But I agree to put a $200 sight on a price point AR would be dumb. If it was Magpul money then yes I'd go for it.

So what I have found is that if I disassemble the front sight, then put it back together without the detent and spring it works fine. I can screw it all the way done and all the way back up again without issues.

With the detent and spring in there isn't enough room to get the teeth of the tool down into the front site slots.

Anyone have a suggestion on what might be causing this and the best way to fix it?

With the detent and spring in I have hard time using a small punch and a needle nose pliers. Trust me, I was in the Army and have used the tip of a bullet without issue, something is wrong with my rifle.

Initially I figured I had a bad tool or just a cheaply made tool. If you read the reviews on Amazon for different front sight tools its kind of hit and miss in the reviews, what works for some doesn't work for others with the same product so I figured the M&P was just different enough that I needed to find the tool that other owners had found worked. I've read the M&P isn't mil-spec so I just figured it was just different enough to have an issue with the tool I had.

Also I should mention I stopped at a store to day and tried the same front sight tool in a new M&P 15 Sport II and it worked just fine so it is my rifle. I just don't want to deal with shipping it back to S&W under warranty. I'm sure like was said above its an easy fix with a dremal or something I just don't understand why the with the detent installed I have an issue.

When I install just the sight without the detent I don't feel like I can get any movement when I apply pressure pushing it back. My thinking being the pressure of the detent was pushing the sight back making the gap too tight for the tool.

I expect the front sight towers all come from a limited number of sources. The same is probably true for the detent and spring. I'd suggest finding another detent and spring and seeing if that makes any difference. Come to think of it, you might try another front sight.

OK, mystery solved.

I took my Dremel and ever so lightly shaved off just a little of the diameter of the detent and put it back together and it works fine now. Must have just been a flawed detent that was just big enough to make everything too tight to work.

So does anyone know what each click of the sight corrects for? Now that I can get it to move I'll be able to sight it in finally.

Approx 1.2 moa per 'click' on the F marked front sight. I'm surprised you didn't learn that in the Army. Maybe you just forgot.

Minutes Of Angle is new to me. Granted I've been out of the Army for years, and even then I was a mechanic not 11B so maybe we just were not exposed to it. Go qualify and then get back to the shop!

I found a picture of the targets we used and it told us what clicks to do without really knowing what it meant. Did anyone on here who was in the military learn MOA?

I guess this old dog needs to learn new tricks!

Default Which target to use?

And another question for the more experienced M&P 15 owners than I am.

The M16 has a 20" barrel.
The M4 has a 14.5" barrel.
The M&P 15 Sport II has a 16" barrel.

Which of the attached targets do you think would be better to use with the M&P 15?

I use the M4 version. 16 is closer than 14.5 than 20. It's close enough for my use.

I was thinking the same logic but we didn't have M4s when I was in so I didn't know if there was a different reason for the different targets other than barrel length.

Thanks for the response!

ELEVATION: 1 'click' adjustment at 25 yards

1 moa = 1" @ 100 yards (2" @ 200 yds. 3" @ 300 yds and so on)

A1 Front Post (Round) 20" Barrel = 1/4" (1 moa)
A1 Front Post (Round) 14.5"/16" Barrel = 3/8" (1.5 moa)
A2/A3 Front Post (Square) 20" Barrel = 3/8" (1.5 moa)
A2/A3 Front Post (Square) 14.5"/16" Barrel = 1/2" (2 moa)

So, depending on your particular rifle type/front sight type, it's still going to average somewhere around 1.2 moa +/-

The difference between the targets for sighting in has more to do with the difference between sight separation of rifle and carbine than it does with barrel length.

OK, a minute of angle is 1.047 in at 100 yards. At 25 yards, 0.26 in. [That 0.047 in can add up big time way out there.]

Rifle with A2 sights: front sight, 1.25 MOA elevation per click; rear sight 1/2 MOA windage per click/1 MOA elevation per click.

Carbine with A2 sights: front sight, 1.875 MOA elevation per click; rear sight 3/4 MOA windage per click/ 1.5 MOA elevation per click.

If your rifle has A1 type sights the rifle version has 1 MOA per click adjustments for both windage and elevation. The carbine version has 1.5 MOA adjustments for both windage and elevation.

I got a new sight post for my rifle and now it all works just fine. My rifle must have come with an out of spec sight post that was too big.

Figured I'd post this so if anyone else has this issue and finds this post they can save some time and just order a new post vs worrying about different sight tools. ALL my site tools work fine now.
