Default M&P15T -- Optics

My issue:
need 100 to 200 yard bench scope
AND
CQB practice inside 100 yards.

Scope is NCStar 3-9x (surprisingly good glass!); red dot is EOTech EXP2.

With red dot there's no way I can stretch out to 200 and not very good at 100 yards with my old eyes, LOL

Just an experiment, feedback (comments, suggestions, corrections, hate it, luv it) appreciated. See pics:

Get rid of the 3-9 scope and get a 1-4 or 2-8. You can use the dot inside 50 yards and the scope for anything else. If you choose a 1-4 scope, you can dump the dot also and just use the scope for everything.

A 4x scope is good enough for anything except prairie dogs at 300 yards and works well enough for them at 200.

I agree dump the NC Star. They are junk they don't track very well and the glass is mediocre at best. It will fail on you eventually. Just Google the scope and you'll see what I mean. I have a 15TS and have a Leupy VX III 6.5-20 X50 on it since I shoot at longer ranges. A Vortex Viper Viper PST FFP scope in the magnification range and reticle of your choice is what I would recommend.

I love mine too, but it's far from a optimal 200 yard optic for bench shooting.

Primary Arms 1-6 would be a great solution for you. I had the 1-4 and at 200 yards, wish I had just a little more magnification. The 1-4 is also a bit big and heavy for what it is.

Since you have the 3-9x I dont think you'll like the Nikon much. I have the Nikon P223 3x32 and its has great glass but the thing I don't like is that the reticle to me is a little thick. It seems to cover about 1 moa of the target at 100 yds. So no go for prairie dog hunting unless they are much closer. Less than 50yrds.

The one I've been looking at that I believe that would be good for you too is the Vortex Viper pst 2.5-10x44mm. You'll be good for most CQB (20yds+) and will have the reach and clarity needed for longer distances up to 300 yrds. You'll also have decent quality scope and the vortex lifetime guarantee. Plus you wont break your bank too buying other name brands like some of leupold or bushnell.

I would recommend the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 (mrad). This is a great optic for an AR. Even with my eyes, 4x is enough to shoot out to 300.

You won't win any bench rest competitions with an AR, but you'll do well enough.

Since you asked for suggestions.... I'd mount that EOTech where it belongs and forget about bench shooting. For 200yds, hang a B27 silhouette and shoot offhand rather than agonizing over precision paper punching with an AR.

I am more into pistols, but like what I just read. My next gun will be something in 223 caliber, I think.

Two way shooter!

I have the Nikon P223 3-9x40 on my 15T. I love it for groundhogs and for distance shooting but I am considering replacing it with a red dot of some sort. I have found that the large scope adds more weight than I want and the added effective range isn't worth it to me.

VX?R Patrol Archives - Leupold Optics | Leupold Optics

Not super cheap, not super expensive. The FireDot reticle is darn sweet.

I do just fine shooting out to 200 yard with the 3x mag stacked behind it

Decided to update this thread after about a year now. Dumped the NCStar scope; at least it didn't cost a bunch. And as a couple other members have said, went back to the EOTech for CQB drills and just use the 1/3 co-witnessed MBUS sights on B27 target at 100 yards and beyond. Thanks again to all who posted their advise.

Good decision. If you want a precision option, put together or buy another upper. That looks like a 16" so you'd likely want an 18-20" mid or rifle length for best results. You could also have a dedicated scope on the upper. This is what I've done and works well.

Thanks, much appreciated. Had thought about another upper with long scope, you may have just convinced me.
