Red Dot on top of scope or angled?
I’m looking to add an open reflex red dot to my M&P AR-15 5.56/223. I have a 6X18x50mm 2nd Focal scope for distance shooting. I’m thinking of adding an open reflex red dot, for quick, close shooting. I know it’s probably a matter of preference, but what’s the consensus, should I mount it on top of my scope or angled mount?

You want it as close to the barrel as possible, so I think the 45 degree rail mount would be the best option.

Thank you! Makes perfect sense. I’ve never shot with a rifle in a Canton position. Is it weird?

It's not weird, many do it. I've tried it too but have no use for it since I only use iron sights. Check this video, it might help in making your decision.

You might want to consider some type of (illuminated) LPVO. Maybe like a 1x-6x or 1x-8x depending on what distances you plan on shooting. You can have it at 1x and it's essentially like a red dot (depending on the reticle type). Use a throw lever and you can quickly crank it up to higher magnification, or back down to lower magnification. Or maybe even a Red Dot in conjunction with a tip-to-the-side magnifier. Just some options to think about.

Personally, I prefer the red dot mounted on top of my primary optic. Shown is a Fastfire mounted on a Burris 2x7 scope using Burris picatinny top rings. It points naturally, and is quick to pick up. Easier to sight in as well, compared to an angled mount. Shown on an older Bushmaster M4.
