I've got an M&P-15OR also. I bought a Yankee Hill folding front sight (YHM-9627)
that is designed for mounting on a tactical forend, shorter than the one made for the gas block. Because of the higher gas block this is the route to go. I'm sure there are others that make folding front sights for the top of a forend.

I have dealt with this issue before and I have used Midwest Industries front and rear sites on one. The model #'s are as follows:
Front site is MCTAR-FFR. Rear site is MCTAR-SPLP. I had to adjust the front a little on the elevation but it shoots fine.

Actually, it's NOT a bad idea! You can replace the tall gas block if you prefer, but I think it will grow on you. I look at it as like it is an extended front end of a top accessory rail!

Also, it is drilled and tapped on it's bottom for a sling mount . . . though many people will mount the sling on accessory rails to improve accuracy.

I just put a set of the new Magpul MOE handguards on my new M&P15 OR, and it has spots on each side AND the underside of the handguard to mount accessories. I'll be mounting my sling on the side of this handguard probably, or on the bottom.

Best of all, it is low in cost (less than $30) AND provides a better gripping surface! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Tom

My gas piston system's gas block was a flat top. I took a tape measure and held the end on the barrel and measured how tall the gas block rail was. I then measured the old front sight post gas block from the top of the hole where the barrel went through. The difference was 1.5 inches. And Yankee Hill makes one, flip up, and it was in stock at a local gun store.

So...I would say if you have another or go to a store and measure the factory front sight and see how tall you need it to be. Of course it may depend on your rear sight. If you get a carry handle type rear sight this works great. However, I don't know beans about optic rear sights in relation to the front sight hight.

My gun's zero was dead on. Didn't have to change sight settings.

I GOT TO GET ME SOME "MAGPUL MOE's"...coolness factor.

Does anyone know if the optics ready model lower receiver is mil-spec? Looking at drop in triggers and one I'm considering is for mil-spec lowers.
