Default Flash Hider

Years ago I decided I wanted to snazz up my run of the mill Ruger Mini-30 into something special.
I succeeded, but Ruger wouldn't sell me their proprietary GB style flash hider while Bill Ruger was in charge.

Went with something different at the time because I couldn't locate one at gunshow or anywhere else after looking for years.
That's why when they came out with their AR-556 I jumped on the opportunity to finally get one!

Then I stood behind a friend as he fired my new rifle from the prone position with the muzzle just a few inches above the dusty ground...

FOOM!

Immediately purchased an A2 flash hider and now I know why the military added the solid portion underneath.

Something to think about if you're considering adding a brake or compensator to your AR.

At one point in time the Ruger flash hider for the Mini was available. I picked one up. However, there was a curve ball there. The Ruger used an illegitimate (special) thread of 0.556 x 24 tpi. Yes, it's doable, but if the rifle ever had to go back to Ruger, they'd change the barrel-and charge you for it.

Wow, I didn't know that, I cut the barrel down so there were no threads and slid on a Mini-14 sized M-14 style flash hider after thinning the barrel OD, then pinned and welded the thing so the overall length was over 26" with the stock folded.

Had to drill out the center for .311" bullets and the barrel had to still be over 16" to keep the thing at a legal OAL.

The reason I chose the Mini-30 over the Mini-14 was to take advantage of the cheap and plentiful steel cased Russian 7.62X39 ammo that was falling off the shelves at the time.

Ruger warned against doing that because the hard Russian primers could cause a firing pin to break and the rifle would have had to be returned to the factory for a replacement firing pin.

I sold the rifle before that ever happened because Ruger policy is to return the rifle to factory specs. and this thing would have never made it through the front door.

These days if I break a firing pin on my AR, a "drop in" replacement is standing by.

...sure turned out purty though.

Big fan of Wilson's Accu Tac 3 prong hider, put it on my MP II asap when I bought it. Put one on my Sig 716i Tread as well. No tuning fork sounds, no timing when installing, and tightens as you fire it by design, just snug it up and go.
